You know it's time to leave the band when......

Two specifics that have happened to me:

1. Join a chick fronted synth metal band. Goes great, even through lineup changes. Guitarist has to leave but we have him prerecorded. After being convinced that all prospective guitarists are ******** that are plotting against her god given vision, Singer decides to play keytar in place of the guitarist with the guitar relegated to backing tracks. Singer does not understand the concept of musical keys and starts writing cracked out video game music that sounds random. Singer gets offended when it is suggested we find guitarist and wants to write music that will make people want to roller skate. Drummer leaves. Bassist tries to stick it out hoping for a return to normalcy and gets told he is the worst person alive for wanting a guitarist in what used to be a rock band and is kicked out. (as a side note, knowing that the drummer was planning on leaving and not tattling to the singer is tantamount to backstabbery apparently.)

2. Join a great promising band that has several songs written and is about to play out. At second gig, band explodes due to tension and becomes three piece. 8 months go by with intermittent practices and no real song writing. No hard feelings, just time to bail.

Yep.

Personal story:

The two guitarists decided to switch from a cover band format with a catalog of popular tunes to a ... Tesla tribute band. Tesla ?!? "Really?!?" (insert South Park impression).

The drummer and the bassist (me) decided to leave and to find a new guitarist and singer and to concentrate on popular covers (practice #3 tonight and we love the guitarist).

I asked them several times "Are you REALLY sure? You know you will not find anybody to join your Tesla cover band, right?"

Answer was: "see you on the bar circuit" (as in "we'll make it but you won't").

As of today, they are still looking (been a month now)

Sad part is they are good guitarists, these two.

That is REALLY weird...but truth is stranger than fiction, right? A Rush tribute band I could understand...but Tesla??? TESLA??? What did they do, like 2 albums?? :hyper:

Good story Nick!

--When you join, they try to make you sign a contract making their band the only one you can be in, ever.

--They treat their friends that show up to hang out and light up with more respect than you, a member of the band with musical abilities.

--The band decides the perfect practice schedule is calling randomly during the week and saying "get here now", even though I had a job and no car at the time.

--You show up and they screwed with your fine tuned amp settings and moved it all around forcing you to re-adjust your levels

--"Practice" consists of 30 minutes of sitting around and occasionally trying a song, and 4 hours of sitting in the drummers living room smoking pot and talking about how "we're gonna make it big"

--Then, when you finally have enough and leave, they leave you lengthy messages on your voicemail about how you sucked anyways, and you never did anything for the band, though you were the one that was constantly interviewing potential singers, and got them gigs.

When you have been playing the same songs for 2 years (learning no new songs) and the band still flubs those songs.

Or when you get to get together for practice and waste 15 minutes asking each other. "What do you want to play?" "I don't know, what do you want to play." (Mind you this is a band that has talking about "going pro" yet can never find time to practice together because everyone is so busy with other things. Then when they do get together they can decide what songs to practice.

Wow! Were you in MY last band? :D
