A few years back, I tried to find one of those little animated characters that people put in their e-mail sigs and stuff. I'd seen guitarists, but I wanted a bass player.

All of them were little animated black guys, and most had bald heads and sunglasses.

So...evidently we are all supposed to be bald black guys who wear sunglasses at night.

I've been told on numerous occasions that I look like a bass player. The most recent time was this past Sunday before my band played. The guy guessed it before he knew who played what. I'm tall and thin. Wnatever length my hair has been over the years doesn't seem to make a difference in the perception that I'm a bass player. My hands look too large for my body, so maybe that's part of it. I think it's probably something more intangible, though.

I wasn't offended or anything i just found it very curious, and when i asked them why i looked like a bass player, they could only reply with "eh, you just do!".

Same as many others in this thread (and no doubt the rest of the forum) I'm a fairly tall dude (6'2"ish) with long bony fingers, semi-long hair, I'm pretty skinny, I'm the exact opposite of shy, I'm loud, and I can and will talk to anyone about anything. And strangely enough, similar to Rancid, I've had people tell me I've got really nice blue eyes.

It seems as though there really is a "bassist" look, or perhaps this applies to musicians in general?

Either way, I definitely think that bassists are the next evolutionary stage of man. Soon the planet will be inhabited by giant skinny masters of the low end!

People just walk up to me and ask if I play bass. Kind of weird, because I usually just sit back and relax until people start talking. Because people say I'm funny, and the girl say I'm sweet, and than BAM!!! they start to "notice" my long hair "It's so cute, you shouldn't cut it. "Yeah, I'm not going to."

But mostly I think they guess us as bassist is the attitude, and the vibe we give off. Because most of the bass players I've met(including me) are sort of quiet, shy, laid back people, who give off a really good vibe that makes you feel comfortable.

Just my two cents. Rock On. :bassist:

I was open jamming with a guitar player last night. He performs jazz regularly in SoCal, but I'm still in my first year. The last time he saw me with my bass was about 4 months ago. He said - "Dude - you LOOK like a bass player now." I asked him why. He said it was my left hand technique (which he perceived as effortless, accurate, and yet lazy looking), and that I never had to look at my right hand. Plus (perhaps) at least 60% of the time, i wasn't looking at my fretboard, and had my eyes shut. :-) Otherwise, I'm tall, skinny, gangly, and playing a stealth Fender MIM last night. I'm still looking constantly at my fretless when playing.

I've never been told that I look like a bass player...but people aren't surprised when I tell them. If I'm with my band, everyone thinks I'm the singer because I'm the only female.

In my studio, the bass players there have a bass player look...all of them have facial hair that ends in some sort of goatee. I'm the only bassist up there without any facial hair...and that's a good thing.

I also have a friend of mine that doesn't play an instrument but is pretty musically inclined. He totally looks like a bass player...tall and lanky, big, long fingers, goatee, all of it. I put one of my basses in his hands and it just fit. He even started to get the hang of it. I'd like to get him to start playing, but the only way he'd start would be if someone gave him a bass. It's a shame...he'd be pretty good and it'd give him something to do other than drinking all the time.
