you look like a bass player

I get that sometimes too, but some years ago people also said to me I must be a bassist because I was doing band interviews for a fanzine that my friends and I have been publishing. They said it seems only bassists have that kind of hobby of writing and reading a lot and being busy with building a scene. Other musicians just play or sing, but bassists are extra cool and more intellectual, as it seemed to them. I don't know if that's true. Maybe it is, the less notes we play the more time we have to think about stuff! :)

Same here. I haven't been told by a total stranger that I look like a bassist, but friends have said that I "look better" with a bass than a guitar. I've always had this kind of bobbing up and down motion that I do when I play. Somewhat like what P-nut from 311 does, but less exaggerated. It just happens when I get in a groove. I guess that might be the reason.

I haven't heard this from a stranger or casual acquaintence yet, but I can't wait til I do. I wanna use the comeback of, "Why? Because you don't pay any attention to me unless I'm not there and you need something from me?" :p

I've been told that I look like a bass player exactly twice.
First was when I first joined my former band. The sax player, who I knew only superficially, said on our first practice together, "Oh it's YOU?? I always thought you looked like a bass player!"
The second one was better because she didn't know I was a bassist, she just guessed it. Oh did I say SHE? Yes, that's because it was a really hot Serbian girl I work with :D. I invited her to a show and she said, "Let me guess, you're the bass player?" Some awkward conversation ensued and she didn't go to the show:/

I'm 5'11" with long hair and giant hands. While I have the stereotypical bass player look, I get more remarks saying I look like a sax player. I play sax more than I play bass, so I think each instrument leaves subliminal cues all over you to signal to other people what you play. Just my idea.

Hmm... after reading this whole thread, I've drawn a few semi-conclusions...

I'm like 5'7, and a little bit chubby... but I "look like a bass player"... so it isn't the Tall/Lanky thing (in my band, thats the drummer)... and my fingers are of average proportion to my body... so that can't be it.

Also, I'm one of the few white people in my band... so the black dude w. dreads idea is out (that'd be our singer)...

Ways in which I am a stereotype, however:
- I have a beard.
- I ALWAYS wear a hat.
- For every cigarette you don't smoke, I'll smoke two.
- I'm "goofy", but I have a very very mild temperament.

I think it might just be some kind of aura we give off... a relaxed "sureness" thing we have going for us... hmmm...

About two weeks ago I was sitting at a restaurant conversing with a friend over a pitcher of beer when across the room this guy keeps staring at me. I was a little unnerved as he was a good deal bigger than me and his gaze was obviously more than a casual glance. When I looked back at him he waved me over to his table. Ends up he has a band looking for a bass player and just wanted to ask if I would consider coming to audition. maybe it wont happen as much now that i cut my hair.. .. my brother is a welder i can spot a welder or an electrician or a doctor from across the room maybe its just instinct

So, bassists are tall/on some extream of build (lanky/heavier)/wear hats/have large hands/long hair(or receading hairline)?
... I fill 1 1/2 of those. xD Well, 2 1/2 if you count the hair. But hey, comes with being a chick I guess.

Not to sound arrogant at all, but I have had women tell me I look like a bass player. When I ask why they say "because you're sexy". Good enough for me.:D

And it's one of the reasons why I love Bass, and why it can do what no other instrument can.

Nothing. I repeat, nothing, makes asses shake and ladies dance more than a great bassline. When the guitarist is doing his jerk-off solo shredding and wailing all over the place, the sweaty mullet guys are in to it more than anyone else. But if you don't believe me lay down a smooth pimp daddy bassline and watch what happens.
