If memory serves there are 2 pioneer chickens left: the original, and one other location. There used to be one near my house when we lived in Long Beach, as well as when we lived in Bellflower. I loved that place 
Slobake: There is a Persian funnel cake place nearby that also makes shwarmas. Theirs are OK. There are a couple of Wholesome Choice markets around, but both about 20 minutes away. They have delicious shwarmas

If I remember correctly, it might've been that their chicken was a bizarre, bright orange color.
If I'm gonna miss a fried chicken place, it'd be Church's or Jim Dandy...whichever one had the spicy chicken.
Yeah but that bright orange chicken was delicious! 
'Twas something I could look forward to just about every Thursday evening when my family was on our way home and didn't have time to cook.
Another good place in Long Beach was Golden Bird...it was a sweet fried chicken, maybe with a hint of honey in the batter or something. I think there are a couple floating around, but completely different ownership and nothing like what I grew up on

All this reminiscing over deceased local restaurant chains is causing me to miss Emil Villa's, an East Bay family owned chain that served ribs that as a kid I remember loving.
Quick interweb search indicates that there are still some open, although the namesake owner died and ownership may have moved around a bit.

Same name, different owners never works out usually. Growing up, my family always got pizza from Barro's. It's long gone but now there's Barro's Bros...supposedly the same family. Not the same pizza.

I can't remember visiting Jim Dandy but Church's reminds me of Golden Bird, not spicy but sweet. Our's was west of Crenshaw on Slauson just outside of the city limits then a new one opened up when the Crenshaw Shopping Center was rebuilt as the Baldwin hills Mall.
You live near one of my favorite California burrito dealers. The Valarta's over by the DMV brought me happiness again just this afternoon. And I just realized I grabbed another at El Indio's yesterday for lunch.
Besides the Panda Express, California burritos are my one of my biggest weaknesses.

Oh absolutely. There are both more authentic and higher quality Chinese restaurants down here, but I admit to having a weakness for Panda Express. It takes me back to cheap takeout I loved as a kid. I can get great dim sum or Szechwan if I want that, but Panda Express is comfort food.
