It's not about being told how to sound, more a question of taking sufficient interest in how you sound, in the context of the music, to make a positive contribution to the whole. It matters, and out-of-context sounds (which includes poor quality in a generally high-quality setting) get noticed, as will those responsible for them.

But we all have a different idea on how "to make a positive contribution to the whole".
You think a member of the audience dictates, more or less, what is a good bass sound and you should take care about that.
I think you are the professional and your job is to offer the best sound based on your criteria since the opinions are subjetive.

His point was simply - for those of you that think the bass is not noticed by the audience - you are wrong. If a couple of people can notice something as minor as a string change on his tone - they probably notice a lot more.

The simple fact is - most people don' run up to the guitarist either to mention slight changes in his tone or playing or whatever

I never thought our audience noticed the bass tone at all, until..........................


One night I decided to play fretless on the last set. Not sliding around slurring fretless, just the same way I had been playing fretted.


Three people came to me at the end of the night, telling me I should always play the fretless , as it sounded more bassy to them. They didn't know why it sounded different, they just liked it.


I didn't switch to the fretless, ( too heavy, too much work ) but you can be damn sure I started rolling off the high-mid content in my tone.

Not quite sure how we got here, and I've never been dictated to by anyone about my sound. But i do take it upon myself to use appropriate sounds that fit the music or suit the part, mindful of the fact that a bad decision can ruin an otherwise good performance, either mine or the band's, leading to poor experience for the audience.

If the Op's sound isn't up to the audience standards, The seniors would have booted jimmym and his band out. It doesn't take many complains to get results. Florida politicians know the seniors vote.

And trust me, those folks WILL contact the entertainment office and the main office next day and make their opinions known! It totally saved our butts when the former entertainment director married this cretin who tried to push out all the previous fan favorites (including us) in favor of acts made up of himself and/or musicians he handpicked and booked because he could make more money for himself through double dipping on commissions. The people there simply would not have it, and you see who's still there and who isn't

Nobody does it.
Musicians play with the sound they like because they think is the best sound they can achieve based on his criteria.
They doesnt change it because an opinion of the audience.
And that is OK. They play with the sound they like.
Respecting the audience is giving a good performance, not eqing your bass like someone told you.

If you want to play with fresh strings or sound more edgy or whatever because some guy in the audience told you, do it.
But dont say the rest of the people are stupid arrogants for not doing the same as you...
