There is an abundance of great tones, none of which are the best or work best in every single context. Embrace the variety.

Very true,sir!
My P comes closest to best in most situations.Musicians/soundmen/engineers know what to expect.
My HONDO works best with one band.My Jazz works better with another.My SX jazz copy works best in acoustic or no drummer situations.It all depends who I'm playing with.

Actually, my go-to is a '79 4001 w/flats. Doesn't have to be trebly at all, unless you want it to be. Can be most thumpy if needed.

Love this thread BTW. It's good to see some "cheap" choices too.

Apart from the Ric, I have a Yamaha BB414 (also strung w/flats) that makes a great sound & would be my 2d choice after the 4001.

Of course, yes it all depends on the context, and I definitely didn't intend to imply "what's the BEST bass in the world, etc.". I guess it's more like, of the basses you do own, which one is a real "desert island" kinda bass, regardless of music style, setting, etc. For example, my JJ 'horn has saved the day in sessions ranging from rock to jazz, even when there were many other excellent basses in the studio that COULD have worked, but for some reason weren't working, and the JJ just plain "brought it home".

So call me an a-hole (lots of people like to), but a lot of you seem to say "I have 5 or 6 'best sounding' basses."

I say you're afraid to commit yourselves... but others say they're afraid I may need to be committed, so... :hmm:

Tough choice. Probably my Warwick Fortress One w/ Bartolini pickups and preamp.

I am a fan of midrange presence, so my old MTD Kingston w/Bartolini pickup and pre ranks right up there, as does my Spector Legend with (you guessed it!) Bartolini pickups and pre.

Been a while since I posted (currently deployed), but I would have to say the "go-to" bass would have to be the Zachary Bass - closely followed by the 1987 MIJ Fender Power Jazz Special. For 5-string work, the Skjold can't be touched. For fretless - the DP Custom Fretless just rocks.
