Your first bass vs. what you play now

first bass/amp I played: a borrowed Lyle hollowbody with Premier 10w 18" monstrosity

first bass/amp I owned: '75 Jet glow Rick 4001 with Sunn Concert + 215 cab

what I play now: P-bass, Stingray, or something Regenerate thru a DI


I am about 180 opposite of what I longed for (and hated) when I was a noob teenager working my first job to buy bass gear

My first bass was brand called Casino, not sure if you guys have them over in the states or not though, you would find the picture of this bass next to POS in the dictionary. I then moved on to a Johnson passive 5 string, again not the world's greatest bass. Somewhere around this time I bought a 4 string fretless beater that was virtualy unplayable. Restored it with all parts I chose myself over the period of about a year.
I then bought a Rockbass Corvette Active 4 and loved it. Better paying job then brought a Warwick Corvette 4 string and Warwick Thumb BO 5 to my stable. Hated the thumb and sold it.
Nowadays I have the german 'vette, the rockbass 'vette, an Epiphone Blackbird and a Rockbass streamer passive 4 that was given to me as a gift. Still wishing I had the fretless though :(

First bass was a Sunburst Samick "P" 4 string that I acquired in 94. It looks like the Yamaha RBX models. In 2001 I picked up my TRB-6P. I still play the TRB-6P and BB1200S in my sig. As much as I don't like Samicks, the bass taught me what I DIDN'T like in a bass and pushed me in the right direction.

My first bass was a Fender P Bass, I bought it new (with my momma's help) in 1973-74 for around $250 -300, didn't even realized what I had back then, I was a little youngster in HS. I've got a Performance YB-5 String Jazz Bass now, and a soon to be 1997 USA Fender Standard Jazz V, and that's gonna be it for me, and oh yea! I do have a USA G&L 2500 that I'm selling

First bass was an Applause PJ copy that I got used for $90. I thought it was the coolest thing, because it was all black (right?). It came with a hardshell case which was great, because I could take it on jazz band trips (the school electric only had a gigbag).

Now, I'm predominantly on my 2009 Warwick Streamer LX broadneck 6 string. When not manning the aircraft carrier, I'm on my 2010 Warwick custom shop $$ 6 string, or my 1996 Corvette 5 string.

In 1982 I bought my first bass, a Fender Musicmaster... since then I've bought, sold and traded over 80 basses.
Today I own ~ 20, ranging from nostalgia instruments from my early days to the boutique basses listed in my signature. Sadowsky, Benavente, Lull and Roscoe are my go to basses, they are superior to the Fender in every aspect.

I started off with a GSR190 Ibanez Jumpstart pack.. the GC sales guy kept trying to talk me into a MIA Fender. I was 17 with $300 in my hand and he wanted me to finance a $1300 J bass. Right. Then again, I also thought a bass was a bass and if Walmart sold them I would have gone there.

I returned it to the store as the thing was a piece, the action was horrible, the pup in the bridge buzzed like mad, the pots were scratchy.. Now I've been through so many incarnations of J basses from Fender and Warwick and homebrew jobs.. I'm currently bassless due to some financial issues but my next one will be a J-style also, homebuilt with a big meaty neck.

First bass was a 1970 Gibson EB-0 that I got free when Pat Quilter (QSC) was just starting out. He had a "Buy an amp, get a free bass" deal. Played that puppy for 20 years.

In 1990 I picked up an Ibanez SR800 and fell in love with the neck. Put some EMG's on it and play it to this day.

I Played a promo gig at a Guitar Center a few years ago where they said I could use any bass they had, Warwicks, Ambelics, ANY bass. I pulled several off the wall and dang if I didn't end up using an SR800.

Oh, can't forget my inexpensive but surprisingly nice Dean Playmate acoustic "sittin' around the house practice" bass.

Three bases in 40 years and one free, economical to say the least.

My first bass was a pawn shop prize I got in 1977. It had a 60s maple jazz bass neck with a star shaped body and a P and 2 J pickups. A friend made a P-bass body for the bass out of birds eye maple, pulled the frets on the Jazz neck and glued maple veneer on the neck. I still play a version of the bass - though it has been modded with a Warmouth birds eye fretless P neck and an EMG PJ set - and then I modded it to a 5-string. Here's some pics:

This has been my main fretless bass - and I would not say that my first bass influenced what I play today - my first bass became what I now play.

I bought my first bass in the mid 60's in a little shop in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. I think I paid $90 new. It had a sticker that said made in Japan but there was no brand name. Came in a cardboard box. Narrow but somewhat thick neck but the action wasn't too bad. I think the sound was okay but it was hard to tell considering I was playing through a Sears Silvertone amp! I currently play primarily a Conklin GT7.

I started with my Highschool's 'Fresher' bass. The neck had nearly warped into a mobius strip.

I went from that to borrowing my Uncle's Pre CBS Fender P. Pretty much went from the crappiest bass I have ever put my hands on to a beautiful example of a classic fender.

The first bass I owned was a MIM jazz that I have since frankensteined and is currently my main gigging axe despite owning an EB MM and a Thumb 5
