my first bass was a junk 1981 LYLE SG/EB copy which I still have, although it only get's used when I see it crying a little from lack of use sitting on a shelf ( haha no case or hanger for that junk )

My first bass was a 4 string P bass copy made by Profile. It had dark blue paint and a tort guard. MY parents bought it for me in 1988 when I was 12. My dad told me recently that when he brought the bass home he wondered if I would even play it. Suffice to say, bass has remained a constant in my life since that day. The Profile is now long gone (traded for an Ibanez when I was in junior high). I wish I had it back.

Ok, all these before/after posts are really cool, so even though I don't have a picture of my actual bass, I did find one that is very close to what it looked like when I first got it. Yes, mine was also refin'd to natural non-professionally. :)

a Peavy T-40... oh lord, I remember when they came out! Heavy and possibly the ugliest bass ever made... But I recall it didn't sound or play half bad. But lord - was that bass UGLY!

Good starter bass, however. I'm a bit shocked it never became "hip" with the ugly-instrument set...

My first bass was a totally beaten up Gibson EBO with action so bad it made my upright seem low. It later turned out that it had a broken truss rod. I traded that for a Hagstrom HB bass that I played for several years & wish I still had. After a train load of other basses may main bass these days are Carvin LB50 Koa basses from the early 80's, the bass just fits me and my style.

My first bass was a used Rickenbacker 4001 that I got for $350 in 1980 or 1981. It was a blonde one like Chris Squire played, though it was mostly because of Geddy Lee that I got the hots for that model.

It was a solid bass, but it was so inexpensive because it needed pickup work done. I played it for ten years before buying the bass that I still have...

My current bass is a '90 Fender Jazz Bass Plus with the Lace Sensor pickups and the active electronics. It's about time for an overhaul, or at least a good setup on that bass...but it's still kickin' booty and takin' names...

My first bass was an unknown 4-string with j type pickups. Since then it has been another unknown when the first fell apart --> BC rich i got for $50 from a friend --> '79 P-Bass --> Carvin 5-string --> Fender Roscoe Beck 5-string --> Ibanez Gary Willis Fretless 5-string. They are all gone and I now play Steinbergers, a 5 string fretted and a 5-string fretless.

My first bass was a Hondo II Precision copy in a tobacco sunburst finish played thru a 12 watt Fender Music Man amp circa 1978.

Now I play a BC Rich Warlock & an Epiphone Thunderbird (soon a Warwick Rockbass), both of which are played thru a Peavey Tour 700 amp and a 1-15 Peavey cab & a 4-10 Peavey cab.

What a difference the years make & a real job will do for ya, lol.

we always called it the JackBird.

thanks for the GREAT new name. I'll have to write a song using it, with ThunderJack as the title. :D
the official name is TBX, one of the very few that made it out of Jackson-Japan before they stopped production.

SHARK1 a fellow TB'er has a sparkle green and a black one ( with a butt-ugly white pickguard --if he see's this thread--lol )

Mine was a Cypher. Odd looking 4 string I got for 50 bucks in 1972. Ran it through a Tenyck 2x15 amp that resembled a small vending machine than anything else. Couldnt afford strings nor did I know what they were all about. Wound up putting these black nylon strings on because they looked cool. Next was a Rick, Kramer, Spector, Ken Smith, Roscoe, MTD635, and those came many years later when I grew up.
Kept the Ken Smith, it has that "thing" about it.

[1992] 1st bass: MIM Fender Squier Jazz 4-string (candy apple red, rosewood board)

[2008] Current basses: Dingwall Afterburner II 5-string (two piece walnut body, pomele bubinga top, 5-piece bubinga neck, wenge board, B string hipshot detuner, FD-3 pickups, OBP-3 preamp) & EBMM Stingray5 single H (one piece ash body, rosewood board, birdseye maple neck)

My first bass was a Yamaha RBX260 in blueburst finish. The pickup on that thing was crap and sounded like a weak Squire P pickup, (that bad) so I put some EMG P/J pickups in it. The neck was very sensitive to humidity and living in Houston it needed frequent truss rod adjustment.

Now I play a Fender American Std. J-bass. What a transition. It was also with that Yamaha and my Ibanez that I began my resentment for after-market active electronics; I'm sure a Stingray's Pup has less out put than EMG or Basslines.
