Your Look On Stage

I quite like the idea of having clothes that depict a completely subverted image to the music you're playing. (suits with heavy metal, gothic for a jazz band...)

Would make for an interesting presence :)

I've seen that done a few times. At some point, you've got to be able to back it up musically (i.e. "walk the walk"). All else being equal (or better), whatever helps you stand out from the rank & file & get noticed is good, as long as what people see once they do notice you is worth their while. If you're "good", it's great; if you suck, then it's a hard fall!

Live music is a multi-dimensional event. The actual music is only one of those dimensions. Ignore any of them at your peril.

Here's me being all \m/><\m/ at Bikerfest 2010 a couple of weeks back. Something like this is my usual get-up...

(Shocking thumb-position, I know. Really don't know what I was thinking!)

I have also been known to don a cool black silk dress shirt, sleeves loosely turned up a bit, top few buttons open, maybe with a simple necklace (currently favouring a vesica piscis) for some gigs. But the metal get-up suits me fine for most shows.

I guess it all depends on your crowd, who you're trying to entertain. The metal crowd has a look, the mall punk crowd has a look, the smooth jazz crowd has a look, then there's the older guys jammin' for fun look which for some reason usually does seem to include shorts and Tommy Bahama shirts.

The pic is cool, you all look good. However if I had to vote, it's that young woman that has the real "rock" look.

I just love seeing younger kids getting into this field.

nah she has the lets do a 10 minute acoustic track in our half hour set and if not im leaving look lol shes left the band because the metal punk band were in didnt play acoustic, weve got someone younger filling in tho my 12 year old brother for a gig this weekend as a last resort lol Link Removed this is him rocking out next too me when we did a gig for our local hells angels chapter.

I play Christian Contemporary, some originals, some others works. Generally, I'm wearing a T-shirt of some kind and pants or shorts. Unless it's a Sunday morning, then it's always pants and an un-tucked collared shirt.

Here's me early on in the day playing for a large church gathering. Used my usual go-to Stingray 5. I was standing away from the mic because we ran out of sheets for the song and I had to look on with the guitarist. Normally I am also singing. There's also a drummer, second electric guitarist, and keyboardist not pictured.

Here's a second picture of me playing with my second band at a cafe gig later the same day. We had to use some of the backline equipment that was provided. I was playing out of an Eden head and SWR cab instead of my gear. Decided to use the fretless that day, which seemed to turn out pretty well as I didn't get anyone complaining that I was out of tune. :D

Also, notice my uncanny ability to not be paying attention to where the cameras are shooting from. :p

Oh, the hat is my super cheapo $5 number that I wear when I don't feel like rocking the faux hawk and having to use a lot of wax.

whenever my band plays im usually the one being watched. i dress how i dress everyday (which isnt super normal) i wear jeans and like a bright orange or red shirt with a band or a singer on it or a logo (i enjoy wearing my fanta shirt on stage) but where i get noticed most is my shoes. right now i wear green and burgundy rental bowling shoes. i used to wear bright blue/green/yellow and black nikes. and before that all black shoes with neon blue laces. but also its a three person band and the drummer cant really move much and the guitarist/singer is tied up on the mic so im the only one able to do anything so i dance around like crazy. my dance has been given the name "pats goofy dance".
