Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, the Afghan Wigs put on one of the best shows I've ever seen too. That was at the Showbox here in Seattle in '98.

Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, the Afghan Wigs put on one of the best shows I've ever seen too. That was at the Showbox here in Seattle in '98.
I saw so much great stuff I can't even come up with a list, I tried. From seeing Hendrix and Jaco in NYC to recent shows from artists like Esperanza Spalding, that list is still growing. I've had a blessed beyond measure life and seeing so much great music is a big reason why.
My Top 10 in chronological order:
Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band July 1981 @ The Spectrum in Philly (the River tour, probably the fifth show I ever saw)
Jeff Healey Oct 1988 @ the White Dot in Atlanta (this was a label showcase, tiny club and I was standing right in front of Jeff the whole time, then I walked up the street to the Cotton Club to see Living Colour)
John Campbell May 93 @ Blind Willie's in Atlanta (live version of When the Levee Breaks was incredible, and John tragically passed away a few weeks later during the same tour)

Fishbone in the late 80’s at a now defunct club in Richmond, VA. It think it was in the building that now houses Edo Squid? It was in that area, on or just one block off of Broad near VCU.
GWAR at the same club, long live Dave Brockie.
And PFunk All Stars when they first started touring again, at the Mosque in RVA.
There were other super memorable shows I’ve seen and on another day this list might be different.
But Fishbone will always be #1. I’ve never heard a band dominate a set like that.

I should have mentioned that , too, as one of the most incredible concerts I've seen (summer 1979).
Rare Blend opened for them at Nelson Ledges Quarry Park in the late '90s/early '00s (don't recall exactly).
I definitely have to add all the basement DIY punk shows I saw as kid.

I moved to Seattle in 1990 after a friend asked me to join his band. Saw Mookie Blaylock at the Moore, with Eddie Vedder
Riding on Chris Cornell’s shoulders. I was also at the Nirvana Peaches Nevermind “listening party.”
Many many shows… I saw Screaming Trees three times, and Mark Lanegan walked off stage Every Show. Twice because he was mad at Gary for rolling on the floor and making his guitar out of tune. One because he lost his voice. Enjoyed the short sets tho!

And my token rock choice has to be my first Dead show: 04/06/71, Manhattan Center, NYC. Oh wait, you said memorable? As if!
Another one that sticks with me was Lou Reed, Rock n Roll Animal tour, with a young Hall and Oates opening. In a roller rink.

I've had several memorable ones. Honorable mention goes out to any of the Tower of Power concerts I went to (6 in all) from 1974 to 1979. They kicked my butt and inspired me!
My Dad's God-son played with Tower of Power. The first time I attended one of their concerts (1968??), I sat back stage next to the organist while they played - talk about making an impression. I had learned their bass parts by ear, but my mind was BLOWN when I saw Rocco's left-hand technique in person.
Several decades later, after Pop had passed, I took my Mom to a ToP concert. We were invited to attend sound check and got there early. One of the guys working security at the venue saw us walking in and approached my aged mother, asking, with a concerned expression on his face, if she knew what kind of concert she was attending.
Without missing a beat, Mom said, "Young man, I got my Soul Vaccination before you were conceived. Please show us to the stage door."

I haven't been to many live shows but my favorite was my first. Jethro Tull at the Beacon Theater. My girlfriend at the time, Stacy, who's awful, got me tickets for my birthday. She wasn't having a good time and wanted to leave. I said she should leave. She wasn't my girlfriend after that. Great show though.
Pink Floyd 1973 Radio City NY The stage rose up with pink smoke surrounding the band. They were playing Obscured by Clouds.....
- Muddy Waters, Charlottesville, VA, 1978. In a club and sat so close I reached out and shook his hand when the show was over.
- Blue Oyster Cult, Minneapolis, summer 1980. Loudest show I ever attended.
- The Clash, Bond Casino in Times Square, NYC, June 1981.
- Paul McCartney, Philadelphia, 2015.
I've been to many concerts and I pretty much remember them all, but my most memorable one will always be AC/DC with Molly Hatchet opening up in September 1979 with Bon Scott. There was probably only about 1000 people there, but they came out on fire.
I was positive they were going to be huge and then Bon died several months later in February of 1980. Of course they did go on to become huge, but not with Bon
