I've been to several country concerts around here. Best performance I saw was Collin Raye in the late 90s. Tightest band I ever saw, perfect sound, and every member did a polished job.
In the early 2000s I saw Montgomery Gentry open for Hank Jr. I had been told to expect Hank to be an old drunk and Montgomery Gentry to be great. Turned out to be just the opposite. Montgomery Gentry was up there with their little cups of beer and forgetting the words to their songs. Hank Jr was tidy, powerful, and put on a topnotch show.
I saw Bela Fleck and the Flecktones in the 90s so I could see Victor Wooten. But nothing surprising there as he was bass player of the year.
I saw Loverboy a couple weeks ago, they did a small town concert in the park. Horrible acoustics in the town bandshell but they still got it. Guitarist kept handing picks to kids, drummer gave his sticks to a kid, and at the end Mike Reno tossed out his Loverboy headband for whoever wanted it. My gf's kid said she talked with the keyboardist after the show.
