If I'm playing alone on an island, I'll tune by ear. If I'm with a band on that island I'll tune to the least easily tuned instrument (piano, organ). If it's just me and guitarist, we're admittedly in trouble.

Markbass Compressore and Tech-21 VT Bass. I can great OD or distortion of either. The Compressore gives me a huge array of compression options and contributes its own sound under heavier comp settings. It's virtually invisible otherwise. The VT has nice tone shaping and character.

Not to derail the thread but have you tried the Source Audio Aftershock? The VT Bass was my one and only OD pedal for years and years for the same reason as you, lots of tone-shaping and variety of sounds.
Instantly sold it when I got the Aftershock. Just sayin'
