Zeibek Submarine alternative

Just FTR, I had a Sub Designer, and sold it because it had a background hiss that would not go away regardless of different power supplies, other pedals in/out of chain, different basses, etc. So for me the tone coloring was not "magic" enough to outweigh the noise.

Thanks for the info, Bongo. Did not seem to be noisy in the clips!:(

I have a v1 Sub (no ultra switch) that also has a tiny amount of hiss, no matter what I try. I know that Os stated in the past that background noise is not possible with the circuit design, but...

I'm just lucky that the hiss isn't noticeable when actually playing thru it.

i've had a Submarine for a very long time now... i bought it when Os was still just selling on eBay (no website). when i first bought it, it had a drop in volume when engaged. Os took it back and fixed it so that it's unity at about 3:00 on the volume.

i love the tones i can get from that pedal. never had any noise problems. right now it's hooked up with all the other pedals and powered with a Pedal Power II.

the submarine art is scratching off, but the pedal's still bright yellow and the green LED is still shockingly bright. :bassist:

I sent an email to cajitastompboxes about the Submarine. If all works out I'll take one for the team and order it to see how it sounds. I did a lot of promotion as a happy customer for the Submarine and feel badly that Os disappeared several times. Hope to check out their take on the Submarine and see if it's a viable alternative. I've been waiting for about 8-9 months for my Submarine w/Ultra so I don't think that's ever going to show up. Had several promises, but no delivery.

I certainly am interested in opinions on this 'new' submarine. The box is a bit big though, compared to the original anyway. Still, if it does the thing, then I may have to try one out too.

True that there is a bit of noise in that circuit and as much as I like the sound there are certainly situations where i cannot use the Submarine.
To clarify the noise will not be an issue for most folks running thru a normal bass amp, Bongo uses a PA style rig that is much more sensitive than your usual bass amp and i do a bit of recording in very stringent situations where the minimal noise is not acceptable.

FWIW, last night I built the vero version of the Submarine linked on page one of this thread. I originally built the Madbean version of the BB Preamp with the bass mods. I am not a fan of the BB. I know the BB gets a tonna love around here, but at least the end product of what I was able to create was underwhelming to say the least. So I went a huntin' again and see the Sub is popular.

I'm am a total n00b at DIY pedals. But that layout is super easy. All told I have about $10 into this preamp so far, but that is without the box and stuff. And for a total newb it took me exactly 1-hour to get from turning on the iron to plugging in the board and testing it. Those with more skill could crank this out in no time.

This preamp sounds very good. I have no hiss that I can detect through a GK MB200. When the tone is all the way up it is a little brittle. I don't like that. But, back off to about 2-3 o'clock it sounds pretty darned good. I need to spend more time with it, but just wanted to chime in that the vero build was way easy if y'all want to tackle it before paying retail.

Exactly right--I only posted my issue with the noise as kind of a "balance" considering all the praise about how "magic" the tone is; but for a typical bass amp situation it's not so noticeable.
