Zeibek Submarine alternative

Are there any web documents to help with building a submarine clone? I found one from this thread (I think) already, and I found some (hopefully related) stuff from albert kreuzer's site (I'm not a builder, I want to have someone else do it). But anything else?

Also, can the submarine be built with two channels, one always on, the other boost/OD? Does that make sense?

Building one with two channels would not be to difficult, because it does not require lots of parts. I think that is part of the submarines beauty. The schematic that I have seen out there is correct as well (I know of only one); I did a comparison to the submarine I own.

Good luck if you give making one a go.

This is the one you've seen? (from the first page of this thread) [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Seems like a pedal maker in another city might build it for me, I'm trying to convince him, but I'm taking a huge risk as I've never heard the submarine. There are no youtube vids as well. I'm just looking to replace my MXR M80 (which is alright, but don't like the dist channel as much) with something new and different.

Thanks! I don't know what you mean by radical tone change. I'm looking for an always on preamp that beefs up my tone. I actually don't really want the second channel to also be the submarine, but maybe more like a badder bad monkey or ibanez pd7 kind of overdrive.

He found the circuit sensible and will build one for me when he finds time. If he can also build an XLR/DI function and/or a simple EQ (don't know if the submarine has an EQ) into it, then I might replace my MXR M80 (which I'm very happy with but I love to take risks and try stuff I haven't a clue about).

My first bass pedal was an M80 and would say that the color buton does more to change your tone than the submarine, the submarine is more subtle. But the scoop from the color button was not to my liking, so the M80 is not on my board anymore. However I have kept the M80 because it has a very clear DI, infact I have used it inconjunction with my submarine for recording.

The submarine does not have an EQ just a tone control. It is a simple circuit that goes:

volume->amplification ->tone control->amplificatoin

thats it! The best thing to probably do is find a graph of the output frequencies then you can visually see what the tone control is doing. I have to rush now but when I get a moment I will try to find the thread that contains the graph I am talking about.

Much appreciated. I'm thinking of having the dude build an EQ in it if he can. I like the color button on my M80, it beefs up the sound, I always keep it on. I'm not that picky about the sound, just want a fat beefed up sound. If I don't like it, I would know, but I can't describe what I like. I'm not that articulate or aware of nuances.

I was excited about the submarine because many people here are/were excited about it. What you said makes me a little worried though. I should probably stick to my M80 as I'm very happy with it (not so much the dist channel).

I never understood what the Phat Phuk B is. I guess it's advertised as a booster? So is it a preamp? I'm interested in preamps in small pedal form (without the DI and separate OD/dist channels, actually I don't mind the latter as long as it's a great OD; I also never use EQ so I don't care about that) that I will always leave on.

It works great as a boost. Also works well as an always on type pedal. I use my Submarine as my always on pedal. There's just something so special about the submarine that has yet to be duplicated. And then I use the Phat Phuk as a boost or for a whole song even when I just need more oomph.

The ground wire on my submarine came loose today and needed resoldering. Not a big deal. However, I took a moment to check over the circuit and compare it to the schematic that is floating around. Actually the capacitors in the tone part are marked incorrectly in the schematic and they should be 2n2 and 3n3 not 2n and 3n, respectively.

very nice to know!

it would be tooo great if someone could unscrew his submarine designer and take photos and write a part list... ´cause we all need a yellow submarine, yellow submarine,.... (or in case of the designer) a sparkling submarine :)

I built a Submarine for myself and I have a couple of circuit boards left over. If anyone would like a RonSound version, please let me know. These are slightly different in that they have an extra buffer stage at the input.

I've got a submarine made by Electronix,(2005?ish)(love it almost always on) and a Mess drive hybrid(not too thrilled, for sale). they were supposedly hand made in Ann Arbor MI. Looking at Zeibek's web site they are obviously same pedals with a different co. name.
I was going to purchase a Gemini drive when the(Electronix) guy said he's calling it quits, couldn't handle the work load.zeibek saying the same thing? is it some kind of marketing strategy?because he obviously keeps coming back
That submarine designer looks wicked!

Over the past couple of years there was a lot of drama over Zeibek/ElectroniX and Os's shenanigans. He disappeared for a while leaving some folks in the lurch, came back asked forgiveness and got back in some good graces only to drop out of sight again. Not sure what ever will happen with that situation, nobody has heard anything for a while.
