Zeibek Submarine alternative

Apart from the sizzle, does it do anything warmth-wise?

Not as much as the Submarine. I probably should test it alone with some short cables. Maybe all it's doing is getting rid of the capacitance effect of the cables and effects after it in the signal path. Could also be that the slight boost is the equivalent of why they always turn HDTVs up to maximum brightness in the stores - people always by the one with the brightest picture. Maybe the slight boost is just making it sound "gooder".

I understand that the EP Booster cuts lower-low and upper-high frequencies (I could not tell you what frequencies though, just read about ot on TGP). Maybe this 'focus' in bandwidth is what causes the added 'magic' effect. That, and line driving, buffering, making more louder, etc...

I know I really want to put one on my guitar board, to do what my Submarine D and BMC have been doing on my bass board; somewhat anyway.

Cheers!

I found out that there are two different version of the EP Booster. The one I have is the later version that has DIP switches for the 3db boost and the high cut. I have mine set to no 3db boost and to leave the highs "flat". The earlier version has a bass boost / bright switch.

I'd say, "No".

thanks for the reponse cybersnyder.

Actually I am glad to hear you say that, because I just did a DIY version of a hogs foot and the description he gives is completely correct. Not very pleasing to my ear either, so may and try to tweak it a bit.

Guess I will have more luck trying to find the actual frequency spectrum (if it exists in print) that the submarine bass boost produces, then try to create something to emulate that.

the search goes on :hmm:

About the closest thing I have found to a submarine alternative is the
$280 DarkGlass Harmonic Booster
Not exactly the same but closest I've found
I don't really have to worry about it though my MKI Sub is alive and kickin strong

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I think my final replacement for the Submarine is the Xotic BB Preamp, the orange guitar version. Set the Gain to near zero, boost some bass and a little treble, volume to taste and it sounds awesome. Plus it has a very tasty light overdrive that breaks up musically if you bring up the gain a tad. The distortion is thick an throaty without the usual rasp you hear in a distortion pedal.

This pedal, the OC-2 and the Line 6 M5 get the coveted "Snyder Approves" award. I'll recommend any of these three to anyone anytime.

Rich...what made you try that particular pedal? Just curious...

I was at Guitar Center, I wanted to buy something. No, I *needed* to buy something. You know the mood, something worse than G.A.S. and I can't leave the store until I find something to buy. On a whim I tried the BB Preamp and it sounded amazing. It probably also stuck out because it was orange.

The new preamp offered by talkbass favorite fuzzrocious (Broke Dick Peanut Gallery) is his take on the submarine preamp. I'm guessing it will have its own sound....but it is an option.

I'll report my findings when I receive it

Mine shipped today. I will have a full review by the weekend! I can't wait. I think the artwork is hilarious!!!:D
It'd be easier to pull that off without offending SOMEONE than a female version imo!

I think it's funny too, just for a variety of reasons I'd probably have to electric tape it before I performed/practiced with it.

Look forward to you review! Especially did he nail the warmth while killing the hiss.
