Zon basses - is everything OK ?

Just curious how your are trying to communicate with them. Are you emailing someone specific, a general email box, calling, etc.?

I emailed Joe about a month ago and haven't heard back. That's the first time it's taken more than a week or so to hear back from him. My instrument still isn't overdue, but it's not comforting to have the communication get worse as the due date gets closer.

Hi! I've been emailing both Joe's email address, and the "Customer Service" email that Martin has responded to me from before. I called the shop and spoke to Joe about 11 months ago, but haven't called since. At this point, I don't want to hear any lip service, so I've been avoiding calling. Maybe I should put a call in after the New Year to see if they've taken on a New Year's resolution to finish up some overdue instruments!

"...he never come back from Copperhead Road" :D

Haha yes they were sucked into the vortex, never to return!

Guys, I'm truly starting to believe that my money is gone and this bass is a phantom and will never be delivered. I would love to be wrong, but I'm emotionally prepared to let it go at this point. I will keep reaching out but the world is telling me that it isn't going to happen. Regardless, I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season!

Don't lose hope. Merry Christmas.

Hang in there. I felt the same way about five years into the wait. I have called and emailed the shop whole bunch of times week of 11/22. Finally got an email response on 12/9. It pays to be persistent and keep letting them know that you are waiting and that you want your instrument now. I received the usual excuses (hardware, electronics, build issues, pandemic) and was told I might receive it sometime next year. At least I finally received a response and Joe is still building. Happy Holidays.

help me out here, what is it about your custom order that would explain why the wait is so long? I feel like I'm missing something.

@Angus waited 12 years for his Zon.
You would pretty much have to ask Joe about why it’s taking so long because I haven’t gotten a straight answer. I posted my build sheet in the Zon Club thread it’s a Vinny 6 32” w/Nordstrand pu’s and Hipshot/Graftech peizo bridge.
Nothing super custom nothing super special. As has been brought up before some people actually get their builds in 18 months and some people have to wait a long time there’s no rhyme or reason.

The only custom build bass I ever ordered was from Bravewood: a 1960 Jazz relic in Oly White that was delivered three weeks behind schedule. A Celtic bouzouki I commissioned around the same time ran three months over and that had me wondering what was going on. A six-month delay would have me requesting my deposit back. I really feel for folk that are 10, 20 years into a commission and have SFA to show for it.

gotcha, I assume on his end of the bottle neck would be fabrication of the shorter neck, not that that explains anything. Just curious why the build cycles are so inconsistent and out of order. but I can’t say that it’s surprising.

It’s really a drag. I know I would be really unhappy to have a bunch of money tied up, being told one thing and then seeing other basses getting finished up and shipped the meantime. And if the “ solution“ is to constantly badger him and raise hell, that is no solution at all

Good points, and the thing as well is nobody can't get there deposits back which blows me away.
