Zon basses - is everything OK ?

Has the guy who has been waiting 13 years had his yet or was that 1st april joke? Cant remember when it was posted. Err play on words not planned. It obviously wasn't posted if he hasn't received it. Hope he is still alive and well enough to play it after 13 years. What a shambles. They could give up guitar building and go into politics!
What?

Welp 3rd time time in a row my bass was promised to ship and it didn't. Martin told me early this morning that he would get me my invoice and shipping confirmation later in the morning and not only did I not get it but no emails back about it.

It's been that way last couple of promised ship dates and deadlines too. They're fine emailing back about what strings I want or whatever non pressing thing but they don't respond to getting my bass shipped
. I've been trying to give them money and to retrieve my property in whatever current state it's in but they have not allowed me to. Seems like they're just blowing me off at this point. Figured I'd give them the benefit of the doubt and one more promised ship date but that's it.

Not sure what's next but I'm pissed off and tired of being lied to

Sorry for you !! You could give them a summary of the multiple deadlines not respected and that you want a picture of the actual state of your bass (and insist about a picture!). It is possible to remain polite while being firm... Best of luck !

At this point, I'd recommend all of the people here who have been waiting much longer than me turn up the heat on the requests for our basses, money back or whatever is needed.

Id hope that if they got a torrent of emails and calls from the good folks of Talkbass, they might feel a little fire under them to clear up communications and meet deadline

UPDATE: After a couple of terse emails to them late tonight, it just shipped. The bill was more than they said it would be just a couple weeks ago but at this point, I just wanted the transaction overwith

Wow. I hope it plays beautifully for you. What was the original quote compared to the revised price, if you don't mind?

I hope so too! Between a carbon fiber neck that's been stable since the 90s and a PLEK machine doing the fretwork, it shouldn't be too much of a gamble...hopefully.

I was told a few weeks back that my final bil was 695 and it ended up being 815. I assume they forgot to add the new drop tuner I requested some months back to the bill but its still annoying when you're expecting one price and it ends up being higher with no advance warning.

Yeah that's the thing, they're good enough that if you can get a used one, it's probably still worth it. Leaves a bit of a sour taste for me but I'm still looking forward to playing it again.

I kick myself repeatedly for not buying THIS:

When it was available some time back. Sad for me then, sad for Zon now. I FEEL for those who are owed instruments.

What a beauty! That would've been my second Legacy. They do come up from time to time. I got mine in '86 when Joe was still in Buffallo,NY. After playing it exclusively for 10 years it got to a barely playable point. It needs to be re-furbished (bowed neck, my fault - I'd get another in a heartbeat, but I'm getting old. No sense ordering something new [see above] ).
But with the backup of actual $$ customers, my sending in the old Legacy for a refurb sounds like kissing it goodbye. Truly a shame...Joe relocated the neck pickup from up against the fb to my spec (I said, "Where Ken Smith has his." ) He loved it and has since tweaked it but not by much.
I discussed remedy with my tech (he is a wizard*) and it's worth a look. In progress. I would really love to have it back...I played the crap out of it...

*P.S. If you're around NYC get to Rudy's Music Stop and ask for Jeremy. The only man I let handle everything I own.

That's where I landed with my 1990. I was planning to send it in to Joe after I received my new Legacy Elite 519. Actually, the agreement was the 90's refurb would be on the house because of that. But this was around the time it was becoming obvious there were problems with the customer service and wait times. My wait for the 519 was substantial and I just didn't feel confident sending in the 1990. When I didn't hear back from Joe regarding that I was content to just drop it.

Man, Rudy's... My last experience there was pretty rough. The "bass room" was locked up, took a while for someone to grudgingly let me in. They wouldn't let me pick up the bass myself from the wall but then they just threw them around. Pretty depressing. I really miss Manny's, that place was pretty awesome.

Clearly you haven't been in some time. They've moved down to Soho on Broome Street - you wouldn't recognize it. No more bass room, just a sectuon. Pensa's are prominently featured. Be sure to see it next time you're in town.
It's disheartening to hear you came to the same conclusion as me regarding the refurb. I'd love to have it back but I can't deal with an indeterminate (and no doubt lengthy) time frame.

Off topic for this thread, but yeah, this was the experience I had when I was at Rudy's back in the spring, too. I was basically forbidden from touching anything without supervision, and they were pretty unhappy about having to "supervise" me. They had maybe eight or nine basses, one Fender and otherwise all Sandberg and Pensa, and most of them looked and sounded like they had been there a LONG time. Four amps, only one of which was plugged in, and was greeted with exasperation when I asked if I could try one of the others out. It was a far cry from the Rudy's I remembered from the last time I went to New York.

since I don't want to stay TOTALLY off-topic, I'll say this thread has unfortunately put me off of ever ordering a BG4, which is a shame because I've wanted one since they were announced.

Guy makes (made?) such frickin' AWESOME basses, and makes it a bummer to get one.
If the case, he should have just gave up the business.
Sad.
As someone who does project management, I think that it's a matter of having someone who is good at building but not good at communication. Not everyone handles communication well, and for a small business, it's probably a challenge to hire someone to manage that side of the business.

Of course, I'm being very hopeful.
:D

I can't re-read the whole thread- Do you have a ZON you're waiting for?
At any rate, I get that an awesome builder like Joe Zon is probably busy in his workshop, doing what a good builder does, and doesn't necessarily have the time, skills, & desire to stay on the PC, answering E-Mails, and/or picking up the phone.
But-If I was long-overdue on receiving a $$$$ bass for which I've paid for most or all- I would not be happy to have him be incommunicado.
I had literally one of the best builders in the World- Michael Stevens- build me a Slant 4 (too good for words).
I was told originally (1) year, it took closer to 2- But- I was kept entirely in the loop on what was happening.
This is the issue I see with those who have not yet got their instruments.

You covered hopeful, so I'll cover cynical: my experience was that Zon was super quick to communicate before I gave them my deposit. :ninja:

Keep in mind on Zon's website once you put a deposit down you don't get it back and it say's on there website.
I would love to buy a Legacy Elite V but the reality is I don't know what the situation is with the company right now and I'm not confident enough to take that gamble for fear I would never receive it.
I am very fortunate the I have 2 Legacy Elite VI string basses that I absolutely LOVE!!!! and would never part with them unless some unfortunate situation arises.

Yes, I have one I'm waiting for. And my point was that the company really needs a good customer service specialist, because of the fact that people are not happy to hear nothing.

I don't think we are disagreeing here...
