Zon basses - is everything OK ?

I would love to be able to order one with the understanding that I would receive it on XX/XX/202X, but realistically that's not something that I could possibly trust to happen.

Still waiting for my "2-3 months" repair, nearly 3 years out.

I support Joe and the crew, and very much appreciate the instruments that they've produced, but this all has to be tempered with the reality of the situation.

There is a long line ahead of you of folks waiting for their instruments. From the experiences listed in this thread, it seems the average ETA is around 3 years from the date you ordered. It is clearly much longer than quoted. I think the right approach is order and forget, knowing all this. Then one day you will get your bass.

100% correct. At my estimated delivery date they had not even been started. For the last 7 months neck and body have been done. In the meantime I had another bass built and I am in no rush

Factually, the verdict is still out on the ‘one day you will get your bass’ part.

Ethically…not a fan that folks on this thread have been waiting 5 years while others are leapfrogging them by many years and getting basses in a far more timely fashion. That is very low integrity imho.

It's been speculated that Zon is running on a shoestring budget and has almost no slack in its production pipeline (from supply chain issues, whatever). They need to move basses as fast as they can build them in order to generate income to acquire materials, pay utilities, employees, etc.

Sure, in a perfect world the oldest orders should get top priority, but in the scenario described above, any build where complications arise would be shelved in favor of orders that can go out the door faster.

This is not a justification, but simply a (possible) explanation. We're all hoping the bottlenecks can be cleared.

7 this Feb.

Since placing the order:

- graduated school
- met a beautiful woman
- married said woman
- bought a house (well, the bank bought it, I pay them monthly and hope to own it in 30 years)
- survived a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic (we hope it's once)
- saw my father through that pandemic (he was very close to not being around)
- had twin daughters
- one of those daughters had successful open heart surgery, the other thankfully did not need anything of the sort

So, all in all, life's been very good and I've been very lucky. It's not preferable that it's taken this long, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't irk me. Compared to the health and happiness of my family, I don't care if all of my possessions burn to the ground.

I do appreciate the support from TB bretheren and sistren. Just wanted to give my perspective. It's not that I'm an idiot or a pushover...I like to think it's just that I've seen past the problem. YMMV though, maybe to some who read this I'm a dope. Meh.

Well your calling of ‘BS’ is substantially off.

Perhaps moving forward, reading threads to ensure you know what you are talking about before accusing folks of ‘fabricated BS’ would be advisable.

I wish it was BS…but it most certainly is not. Rumblfisher is on almost 7 years waiting now as you can see above.

Hi everyone,

I am like most people on this thread expecting a bass this year. Curious if you have heard of the gloss finish on Zon basses being prone to cracking? Most images online typically show a well taken care of bass with cosmetic cracks especially the legacy models.

I am wondering if I should switch to the Matt finish.

I owned a Sonus 5 for ten years never an issue on the gloss finish ever.i live in ND, -30 to 95 above. It was always in a Zon hard shell case.

The coating cracks, this is a known issue and the shop is not even shying away from that, it seems to be more on the gloss ones and I feel that the "recent" ones (ie <20 years) have the satin coating that is more durable

My two Sonuses that are about 12 years old are pristine (my custom 5 still have the plastic on the electronic cavity cover...)

I have just sent a fretless 5 that has cracks on the neck to the shop...luckily I'm in no immediate need of the instrument so it comes back by end of the year I will feel lucky
