Zoom B3 As Preamp Part 2

Hello,

Reading the thread I understood that the B3 can produce cool rock sounds (SVT, HA3500 ....) but can this little box produce smooth vintage fat "motown like" sound ?

Thanks in advance
There are several vintage amp models in the B3, Ampeg B-15, Fender Bassman, Marshall Superbass plus a host of compressors and EQ's. I'm sure it will do fine in the Motown realm. :) In fact I think there is a Detroit or Motown preset if I recall.
Take care,
Brent

Hey guys,

I believe someone pointed out that you could use the depth knob of the AC Bs Pre as HPF. I was curious and downloaded some real time spectrum analyzer, sent some pink noise and checked things out.

Disclaimer: I have no idea how to operate this software properly!!!

I have to say that I didn't take the time to calibrate things properly but instead was more interested in the roll-off-frequencies. I set the cursor to 30.8Hz, the fundamental of a low B. The pictures are probably no good for determining the steepness of the roll-off!

Anyway, enjoy:

That's quite useful, nice to see the frequencies a little more clearly. I know someone estimated the roll off frequencies earlier in the thread and I've been using that and my ears as a guide. The AcBs Pre is a great tool and very flexible.

Hi ya'll

How do you guys use the B3 when performing? Mine is on the floor but that means it is very hard to changes patches from song to song. Perhaps it is an easy fix but don't know. Looking at a Line6 bass pod xt as it seems a bit easier to change patches on the fly.

Thoughts/Suggestions? Thanks

I use mine in combo with a ms60. The ms is used for the effects I keep on all the time(or for large patch chages, it can switch patches faster) and the b3 is use for effects that I turned on and off multiple times in a song (or for single effect managing). This gives me 7 effects to play with in total. However I manly use 4 to 5. T

Question, how hard is it to change things on the fly when using live? Is it hard to tweak effects or amp sims?
I haven't tried one yet, but thinking of getting one for some smaller gigs where space is an issue and I have to go direct, no amp.

Thanks for any input.

[edited since grammar is not a prereq to play bass it seems.]

switching patches mid songs is not great. It's possible, but there are too many button presses to really be great live. If you're looking at at heavy patch changes I would go with the Zoom MS60. With that said switching between songs will not be a problem on the B3 and affecting each effect on its own is super easy live. If you can I would get booth.

Same for me. I use the MS as a preamp then the B3 for on/off type effects. This works well for me because, as nataku33 said, I find changing patches on the B3 to be a pain in live situations unless there is time between songs. It is not possible to change patches on the B3 during a song without turning the middle effect on or off.

Edit: I find no issue editing a patch. In fact, I find that easier on the B3 than the MS because you don't have to scroll through effects.

Not really thinking patch changes mid song, was thinking if something didn't sound right for the room or going through the PA, if it was easy to tweak it. Mainly to use as an all in one tuner, pre-amp and use some effects. Amp sims got my intrest as I will be bass, b3, Bose PA.

Thanks

Super easy. The three "stopboxes" have 3 dedicated parameter knobs each. They also made the interface simple enough to adjusts on the fly. There is still room for improvement however.

I use mine as a front end to get all the various amp models and tone patches. I run it into a Art ProChannel to match gain and take care of global EQ.
