Zoom B3 As Preamp

I have the opposite question as Kuroth....
I hate all the patches...can I wipe the B3 to have no patches so i can start from scratch?

Using Edit&Share, you can select all, right click and click "Clear." It sets all to 001/OptComp and off with no patch names. That would be scratch IMO.

I'd be nowhere without Edit&Share. That was a big part of my buying decision.

Thanks for this advice, Doctor!

Question: Just curious, what does it do to the TOTAL settings for each patch? (besides blanking the patch name)

Thanks, Kuroth, I'm indeed flattered, but let me explain why I really haven't done that so far.

I really do not believe there is any patch I can provide that will sound the same to others as I hear it on my side. In theory, the bass guitar I use, my playing style, connected equipment, and the way I connect/configure them are just as important as the patch settings themselves. Instead, I would rather suggest use of a certain single effect model on the B3 and have you make it your own.

As to not totally disappoint you, a few pages ago, another poster asked me for settings and here is what I would consider the cornerstone for many of my patches.

Enjoy!

Understand..

Thanks!

If you mean the Patch Level and Balance, it sets them both at a value of 100.

I edit and tweak mine almost 100% through the software, so I'm not sure what else is in the Total settings.

I need to spend some time navigating the controls on the pedal so I'm prepared for that time that the need will surely come up.

Thanks! Those were the main two parameters that had my interest and I could not suggest any better default values than 100 for both.

As one could tell, I don't use the software, but I know many others find it quite helpful and this would be one of those cases where better functionality is found outside the hardware.

Cheers!

Charlie! Man, you gotta spend some time with the software. Haha!

Management of patches and groups of patches in ways that are just so far beyond using the pedal...I can't even imagine. Reordering, renaming, changing parms, etc. is just some clicks and some typing.

When you have the pedal connected, you can work with a patch group as though it's the group in the pedal; headphones or connected to an amp. Just tweak away. When you're ready, copy it to the pedal. Boom, you're set.

You can save as many groups as you like. That's powerful. Right now, I'm live with the pedal, but I'm still mapping out my use. I intend to have groups for different uses, like if I'm going out the door with an amp/no pa, I can load the group that I'm using for that. Right now, since I've set so little up, relative to what I want to do, I have my FOH/no amp on stage patches in the A bank and no cabinet sim copies in the B bank. I have a few useful effect patches to load.

I keep a copy of the original patches and the first two sets of edits I made to those; miscellaneous changes I made to make some of the original patches more to my liking/use.

Yep. I'm not a fan of posting patches either, for the same reason. It all depends on your bass, your amp, your cab, and mostly your playing style.

Kuroth, first set your bass and amp to a sound you like, with everything bypassed on the B3. Then start with one effect (or amp sim), leave the other two turned off, and start tweaking the settings. Keep in mind that there are multiple pages of settings for each effect. And look at the mix option in the total menu - it means you can blend your effect with your clean signal. I suggest starting with 100% effect.

You'll get the hang of it.

Doc, it looks like you've got it set up for both an expression pedal and a foot switch. Are you able to use both on one patch, and if so, how is that wired?

Despite only having one rear jack marked CONTROL IN, the B3 clearly supports the definition/use of 2 simultaneous foot controls under the TOTAL menu.

Google image search shows that the rear view of the Zoom FP01 expression pedal has additional jacks on it and the FS01 footswitch has no such jacks besides a single connection cord. No product manuals could be located online, but I found a very telling schematic diagram.

Although I do not have access to either pedal, it appears one first connects the FP01 expression to the B3 and then the FS01 footswitch is connected to the FP01 using its extra jack for that purpose.

Edit: I think I may be in error here, see new post below

I think I may need to get my hands on those pedals. Thanks Charlie.
As for sharing patches, I never really understood the appeal. I never even scrolled through the presets when I got the B3. I started fiddling and building my own right off the bat.

You're welcome and surprisingly, I have noticed that the average street price of those two Zoom pedals combined is almost half the cost of a new B3.

You may be able to use other 3rd party foot pedals if you have easier access to them. For example, an old keyboard sustain pedal I had around works perfectly with the B3 as a replacement for the FS01. The thing to note is that the FS01 is an "unlatch and normally closed" switch like my sustain pedal is. The expression pedal may even be easier to substitute, but keep your sales receipt for return just in case.

Cheers!

The more thought I give this, I think I could be in error in my last post on how it appeared to me that one plugs the FS01 into the rear of the FP01/02.

Even though the schematic below indicates a switch in the circuit, it did not occur to me that the switch could be a toe switch like typically found in a classic Wah pedal. In that case, the tilting of the pedal is the expression part via the pot control and possibly a built-in toe switch is the assignable switch and perhaps not a piggy-backed FS01 pedal.

The mystery continues ...

Case closed.

Further image searches confirmed that the FP01's extra jacks provide access to an optional separate expression circuit only.

The latest FP02M pedal appears to be the same as built-into the G3X which indeed has the suspected toe switch.

Even though I have yet to find a rear image of the FP02M pedal, it is not likely that it features more than a single 1/4" TRS jack on it.

In closing, use of the FP02M will provide both simultaneous expression and switch control via a single pedal and use of a single FS01 will provide only switch control.

However, thanks to the discovered schematic, I can provide instructions on how to hot-wire both pedals at the same time if need be :D

Cheers!

Anybody charge full steam ahead with a B3>Powered Monitor setup? I know there had been talk, but I didn't notice where anyone was really running one as a monitor or smaller gig rig.

I grabbed a JBL EON 10" from our practice space to see what was what. It sounds pretty good, though (obviously) not too beefy. GAS has me eying one of these...

Any experience or thoughts?

Not the same but I have used a powered Mackie 15 with both my BDDI and old bass POD with good results. I'm sure it would sound excellent with the B3.

I have personally used the B3 with each of these and with absolutely amazing results: QSC K10, QSC K12, and Mackie SRM450

All of the above have fantastic low-end response and high-enough SPLs that I struggle with why I feel I need to cling to my real, much larger and heavier, bass cabinets

IMHO, the reason I believe this combination of B3 and active full-range speaker is so effective is mainly due to the B3's superior amp and cabinet modeling DSP

Highly recommended!
