Sounds to me like a cranked tube sound. I believe you can get that sound with the sansamp bass driver model at a high gain setting.

I'd probably try to get coerce it from a Bassman or SVT model... Maybe put a booster in front to up the gain. The Sansamp has this midrange thing going on that doesn't quite match what I hear.
You could do that, or you can use the sansamp model with either the svt model or the bassman model. that way you can get that growing distorted sound from that soundcloud clip you've posted.
Is steinberg really that bad? cause I've heard some decent things about it. I personally don't use cubase, but I was informed that it was pretty decent. I use sonar for all my recording needs.
I agree and I'll try that. A maxed out Sansamp is pretty buzzy, but this tone has girth to it. Are you suggesting an SVT or Bassman model with the gain maxed and a booster in front of it to further boost the gain?
Would you put the Sansamp in front of the SVT/Bassman and what gain settings would you use?
Here are the settings for the driven tube sound in that clip:
ZNR: 7, gtrin, 100
Booster: 100, 0, 0, 100
SVT: 0, 0, 5, 350, 100, 100, off, orgn, 50
Total: Level 59 Bal 35

I would put the sansamp on section 2 and the svt/bassman on section 3. I would use the sansamp gain at around 70%.
Section 1: any effects you want
Section 2: bassdrive
Section 3: svt or bassman
You can replace the noise gate with a graphic EQ to give yourself a bit more control on tailoring the sound ... I do this often with overdriven / distorted sounds ... Works a treat
I'll have to try that! What sq settings would you suggest to control the noise?
I control the noise by setting the gain up so that I have to put reasonable authority into a note to get it to really break up. Besides, in this context, a little noise just adds to the vibe .
Eqing does wonders for overdrive/distortion sounds. I was informed that the one way to get a great overdrive ordistortion sound without the use of blending is by eqing the overdrive or distortion effect you use. I would believe that because I did something like that on the digitech bp355 I use to own and eqing the distortion patch I created did wonders for my recordings.
Here's a new patch Idea I came up with. this patch was inspired by one of the distortion effects on the boss me-50b. this patch has a low gain blended distortion sound that has growling lows and distorted highs.

Section 1: splitter: hi: 38, lo: 40, freq: 250hz, level: 90
Section 2: dist 1: gain: 10, tone: 50, level: 100, balance: 18

I happened to catch some of Nirvana Live at the Paramount 1991 yesterday and Krist had a Proco Rat distortion taped to the floor in front of his amp. He had 2-Mesa 2-15" cabinets. I did't see what was in the rack for an amp.
I would imagine using the Squeaker distortion through the SVT would get you in the ballpark.
Factory preset "Swirly" is perfect for "Come As You Are".
