Zoom b3 patch Ideas

For that jason newsted sound, try this patch.

Section 1: znr: thresh: 17, detect: gtrln, level: 100

Section 2: m comp: thresh:18, ratio: 5, level: 90, attack: 5

Section 3: svt: bass: 4, mid: 3, treble: 2, midfq: 300hz, gain: 35, level: 35, ultra: both, cab: swr4x10, mix: 50

Crystalman, this patch sounds very nice, but it adds tons of noise. I guess my noiseless pickups are not so noiseless after all ;)

The problem is the noise is present even when I'm plucking the strings, and AFAIK, the znr only works during pauses, right?

Yes it does. the znr works when you're not playing. when you start playing, you hear some noises, but it shouldn't be a big deal since the noise will stop when you don't play. also if you have the treble boosted, that could be the cause of the noise you don't want. try turning down the treble a little bit and see what happens.

Greetings fellow bass folk!.....new b3 owner here, got it last week and have been greatly impressed by it.
Being pretty new to the multitude of effects on there and the combinations thereof, and the multitudes of parameters on each to tinker with, can I borrow the expert knowledge of our b3 gurus on here?
rather than trawling 75 pages of patches....can anyone point me patches that could get me near the following tones
1. the peter hook...joy division/ new order sound
2. Lemmy ....
3. a subtle overdriven sound (think the guitar hook in 7 nation army on bass)
4. bruce foxton
5. a nice clash/pistols/talking heads punk tone

I am loving the b3, but there are so many things you can alter, im stuggling a bit!!!!

any help appreciated
ian

I've never used a compressor before. Read about setting them up on onvilab but still in trouble..
Could anyone explain the settings on the M Comp and the 160 Comp to me?

M Comp:
Threshold 0-50. (Is there like a good starting point for this value?)
Ratio 1-10 (is that1:1, 2:1 ..... 10:1?)
Attack (I sort of understand this one. Small value is faster attack?)
Level (volume)

160 Comp:
Threshold -60-0 (0 is 0db? again what's a good starting point?)
Ratio 1-10 (1:1 2:1 .... 10:1?)
Gain (I understand this one)
Knee (slow, fast attack?)
Level (volume)

M Comp:
Threshold 0-50. (Is there like a good starting point for this value?)
This is the level at which the comp will start taking effect, anything below this threshold will not be effected, so if you set it low it will activate sooner, set it higher and it will allow more dynamics.

Ratio 1-10 (is that1:1, 2:1 ..... 10:1?)
This is not stated but the lower the ratio the less it will compress the signal low to high would be something like 20:1, 15:1, 10:1, 5:1, 1:1 (I'm not 100% about the values though).

Attack (I sort of understand this one. Small value is faster attack?)
I would say that small values are slower attack and high values would be faster attack.

Level (volume)

160 Comp:
Threshold -60-0 (0 is 0db? again what's a good starting point?)
This isn't stated but I would think that it is something like that as it is reduction only.

Ratio 1-10 (1:1 2:1 .... 10:1?)
Same as above.

Gain (I understand this one)

Knee (slow, fast attack?)
Kind of a preset of fast or slow and you select the one you want.

Level (volume)

Alright well thank you, I'll try to experiment with these again. It's really hard to tell if these are doing anything or if what they are doing, is good.

This question most likely belongs to another thread, but take a look at the following article: The Beginner’s Guide to Compression - Envato Tuts+ Music & Audio Tutorial

So I tried to set up for real light compression yesterday

160 comp: THRSH -12, ratio 3.0, knee soft, level 80, gain 3
D Comp: Sense 3, Tone 4, Level 77, Attack slow

Do you think these are alright?

If you like the sound then yes. Without any recordings we can't judge and we all have different tastes anyway. Listen with your ears and not your eyes.

This is pretty relevant so I'll ask here instead of making a new thread.

Has anyone found a use for the bomber effect? I can't help but wonder if there's more to it.

I've used the bomber effect on one of my recordings. I've used the lightning setting at the end of the song for a thundering effect. I think the bomber effect is more useful for making sound effects.

I've made a lemmy patch a while back. it was on page 13 of this thread. here's what I came up with.

Lemmy

Section 1: any effect you want

Section 2: squeak: gain: 35, tone: 75, level: 100, balance: 40

Section 3: super b: bass: 4, mid: 7, treble: 7, midfq: 350hz, gain: 45, level: 80, presence: 7, cab: bm4x12, mix: 50

Here's a new patch idea I came up with. this patch has a heavy darkglass vintage deluxe kind of sound. it has a metallic distortion sound with warm lows and clear highs.

Vintage metal grind

Section 1: m comp: thresh: 20, ratio: 5, level: 100, attack: 7

Section 2: metalwrld: gain: 25, tone: 45, level: 100, balance: 18

Section 3: fliptop: bass: 4, mid: 3, treble: 0, midfq: 300hz, gain: 45, level: 90, ultra: 90, cab: ag8x10, mix: 50

Here's another patch I came up with. this patch has a warm grinding overdrive sound with a significant mid-range presence.

Grinding bassman 2

Section 1: m comp: thresh: 20, ratio: 4, level: 90, attack: 80

Section 2: t-scream: gain: 30, tone: 70, level: 100, balance: 25

Section 3: bassman: bass: 4, mid: 3, treble: 0, midfq: 250hz, gain: 45, level: 75, deep: off, cab: ag1x15, mix: 50
