ZOOM B9.1ut

Bumping this up to re-express my love for this unit! If you have one of these and you are not using the editor/librarian software, you do not know what you are missing. It is so easy to edit the patches using the software and it controls the unit in realtime as well. I have a patch that is my main live setting and I can easily tweak it in the software without it being hooked up to the B9 and then I can download the updates later. I always have one of the function buttons set up to tuner display, as I never bypass the unit, and I use the volume pedal as a mute. The z-pedal is usually set to preamp gain, so I can get a little volume boost with just a twist of the foot. Since I use the amp modelling all the time, I set the #2 button to switch the effects loop on/off and run my B2 in the loop. This allows even more flexibility, as now I can use effects pairs of effects that I cannot on the B9 alone due to how the modules are set. Want to use the wah and the octaver? No problem. Tube Screamer into the Bassman model? Yup. Chorus and flanger? Got that covered, too. Plus, since the loop can be switched in and out, I can leave the B2 non bypassed and easily switch to the preset I want without interfering with the main sound.

Yea the librarian has saved me from the back ache of hunching over the pedal editing tiny details. Plus the eyestrain of reading tiny led displays. Best bang for your buck for any ME unit out there. I haven't really found much use for the cubase software, but it does work.

Really like the features and sound but I have had no success creating a connection from the B9.1ut to my Windows XP with SP4 and the included Librarian software. It would be much better to create patches, view patches, and save patches from the computer instead of the knobs and small digital readout from the B9.1ut.

I contacted Zoom and their reply was "We guess that MIDI interface is not compatible with our product, we would recommend to use this product from following link.

However, the B9ED does not support Windows 7 64bit, it is supported by Windows XP (SP2 or higher) and Vista. When the B9ED ends, the error message comes out and patch data cannot be preserved. Preserved Patch List cannot be opened on a browser. We are terribly sorry that we did not meet your expectation. We will forward your feedback to our R & D team for future reference.

Problem is the Roland MIDI cable they specify is no longer available. I have tried 2 high end cables with no success but I cannot continue to purchase cables in hopes of finding one that works.

For this reason alone I am very dissatisfied with the B9.1ut and Zoom’s customer support. If you buy this unit do so with the expectation that computer interface is impossible.

Are you plugging the USB/midi interface into a USB hub, or directly into the PC. When I had mine, it was very picky about hubs, and port types on my mac. I had to run my interface through the ancient USB1 port on the keyboard, as it didn't play ball with my USB 2 hub, and didn't have any free ports on the mac itself that I could free up.

Got my b9.1ut on Friday evening. Finally got to play with it this afternoon. I love it so far. The editor/librarian software is excellent. I've got a few basic patches worked up. Lots of good factory patches as well. I'm not overly impressed with the synth stuff, but probably won't use it for that anyway. I still plan to post a video after I've worked with it some more.

I've had both. They're 2 different critters, but both are great.

B3:
+ More flexibility with effects and ordering
+ More and better FX.
+ Smaller, USB powered, no MIDI required
+ Better software UI

B9.1ut:
+ Easier/quicker to switch patches live.
+ No need for additional expression pedals, etc..

Did you find that the tube had much effect on the B9? You really can't drive it to saturation right?

I just noticed there is a B9.1ut on eBay for $5.50 + $30 shipping. Not bad if it doesn't run high on the bidding, for the bassist with more time than money.

I hope Zoom captures the best features of this unit and the B3 in a future B5 type model. From what people wrote here, they really need to make the learning curve easier and use MIDI-over-USB.
