Zoom H2 Handy 2 Track Recorder

Yes, I formatted the card in the Zoom. It said I had six hours and some number of minutes remaining in four-channel mode.

I am unable to do anything with the card at the moment, even format it.

Also, the maximum file size under FAT16 is 2GB because that's also the largest partition size possible with FAT16. The card, after formatting and before breaking, appeared to be formatted FAT32 by the Zoom, as it was a single 8GB (well, about 7.5 really) partition.

Our band has used the H2 on 2 separate rehearsals recording parts of those sessions this week so far...we've only tried playing back what we record through my Surround sound system for my HD-TV. We set the H2 in the middle of Bass and Rhythym guitar Amps,PA Vocal Speaker to record from the front 2 channels...,and Drums ,Lead guitar Amp and PA Vocal Speaker from the 2 rear channels. After playing with the gain/volume enough to get it sounding right and mounting the H2 on a Mic stand ... we recorded on surround 4 channel mode...then played back on my 5:1 surround sound system...it was breathtaking-and we have'nt even tried normalizing or panning or sending our recordings to the computor to buff them up a bit. I'm using a new computer which operates on Windows Vista, I've had to sell my old recording interface because it was'nt Vista compatible(alot of recording software programs are'nt yet...Vista even crashed my Ipod),so I don't currently have a good recording/editing/burning package on my computer yet, but does anyone know of a good inexpensive or even free downloadable software program that is compatible with Vista??? I'm still trying to read the H2 manual,but have'nt had the time yet-having too much fun with it .Thanks ahead of time for your knowledgable assistance Recordng Software if given. My band & I have got to get to bed earlier though,so signing off for now!!!!! Basically a very cool device-I personally prefer playing live/recording with the whole band at once...DAcat...Peace :cool:

Can anyone post some recordings from this thing?

My guitarist (the ever pessimist) seems to think it's a bunch of crap.

We're looking for something to record our rehearsals with. I thought this would be perfect, he thinks we're better off using his laptop computer (not that it's a better recording device, but more so because we wouldn't have to spend $200 on something else).

I'd really like to hear some clips! You can e-mail them to me if you can't post them!

If you have a good condenser mic, and a way to control the gain into a recording device, a laptop should work just fine.

The thing about the H2 is the size and convenience. Plus the recordings a superb.

I agree... it's either invest in a good mic and some software, or the H2...

I like the convenience of the H2.... I just want to hear a "typical" recording before shelling out $200

it's got just the standard 512MB card so I ran it "MP3 VBR" using all 4 mics recording to a single stereo file (8.5 hour potential). These files were transfered via USB and uploaded... no processing. They seem to have marker & tag issues... I haven't attempted to re-encode them to fix it. They play fine, just end before the player thinks they should.

Please keep mind of the fact I've jammed with the singer/guitarist 2 times and the drummer and second guitarist just once.... and not had a steady gig in ages!

Bee -> FX board -> Ampeg 1x15" combo (not the portaflex).

STE-004.mp3 makes use of my OLC Thor distortion box.

Nice Job,James:D -but a couple of questions :confused: ...1)what software program did you download to? 2) Did you normalize the recording? 3) Did you have the low cut on? 4) Were you recording in 4 channel or stereo? 5)What kind of computer(Mac, etc) do you have and what kind of OS do you use-ie Windows XP etc? 6)Since the instruction manual is like a lot of manuals and not totally clear-would you mind telling us all in simple plain English how you got the recording from your H2 to your post on Talkbass and then how would you put it on CD? I know thats asking alot:D -but it looks like you've got it figured out. Thanks...DAcat :cool:

1) none, when attached to USB go to the H2's USB menu... I just copy/pasted in windows from the H2 folder that showed up on my PC

2.) I would have if it was recordings worth sharing... these ARE the files the H2 made.

3.) Nope

4.) Stereo MP3 VBR using all 4 mics

5.) Windows XP on a 1Ghz Athlon processor and 512MB of Ram (I need a new PC!)

6a.) I pay for my domain to be hosted on a webserver (I pay about $8 a month)... I use an FTP program to move files to it.

6b.) I use "Nero". drop MP3 files on a new Audio CD until full, click burn :D

I don't frequent this forum much, I'm not a gear head for recording stuff, but actually I came in to start a thread about this amazing little device.

I just recorded a show last night from a bad location, in a mediocre sounding room, with a bass player trying to fill the bar 3 blocks away with muddy low end, and it STILL sounds good. Just squeezing it through the iTunes EQ and rolling off the monster low end (yes, I said MONSTER LOW END) made it very listenable.

I can't publicly post the link because it's of a touring act and it's hosted on another bass forum. PM me and I'll supply the linkages. If you are skeptical about how good the H2 sounds, or how flippin' easy it is to use, this will change your mind. :hyper:

A quick PS after reading the thread more closely.

The standard max size accepted is 4gb, so wouldn't that be FAT 32 anyway? Why all the talk about some 2gb limit when the documentation/descriptions clearly say it handles a 4gb card? That would make handling an 8gb card a firmware issue, and also leads me to believe that they will be increasing capacity as their database of user info grows.

James - I'm just listening to the first clip you have on that link and it has convinced me that this is probably the best thing for jamming and getting ideas from jam space to the computer. Its amazing.
Now I just have to get my rich guitarist friend to get it for me :D

oh btw, I love your playing. Very nice groove, I could listen for a long time (and probably will)

@ $199 just add another $51 of stuff to it and Invalid Link Removed will let you pay it on a MAC card over 3 months :bassist:

thanks, I was hesitant about posting this... I don't mean it to be a sample of my work :hiding: It's actually the first real jamming I've done this year. Hopefully I'll have some better thought out lines and some completed song structures next time....

but I'm glad you dig it. I was having fun, which is all that matters to me at this point :D

I really appreciate the explanations (since I'm no computer wiz-I'm a better bassist), James...but unfortunately,when I plug the USB Cable in-the H2 is'nt recognized on my computer -its a new Dell-powerful and fast but running on Vista-A Roxio screen pops up but with NO recognition of my recorded files ...which continue to remain on my H2...I suspect its a Vista problem since I've encountered many other problems with Vista. Does anyone know if you can download the recorded files to the software program of choice-on a Vista OS computer...I have audacity on my computer??? Has anyone else run into this problem? Peace...DAcat

1.) plug in USB cable
2.) go into the USB menu on the H2
3.) select "Storage"

that activates the USB port on the H2. Give Windows a minute or 2 to install the drivers it needs to mount removable drives. At that point it should be viewable within your "My Computer" screen. In XP it pops up a window with choices of what I can do with the newly mounted device. I chose to "open folder view"

Thanks James-It wasn't easy-but after combing thru what you said over and over-when you mentioned "My computer"-I went there and found the file-copied it-then imported it into Audacity-I didn't do any mixing/panning- but from there converted it to MP3 and then imported to Itunes- then burned a CD-and it sounds as good as many live CDs(we only had 3 bandmates present-myself-the Bassist, the Lead Guitarist, and the Singer/Guitarist...we also used a drum machine -referred ro as "Ed") I have heard, except we should have had the vocals louder in the mix. Its the first time we have ever jammed on this song and we it was the first time we were all together to record so the begiining and end are rough,but it gives you an idea of what a great device this is. My band mates love it and were beginning to get a little impatient waiting for me to figure out how to download and make recordings with it, but I'm impressed now that I have the downloading part down!! ...Thanks for the patient help :D...now :confused: how do I upload the MP3 to this siteso I can share another H2 recording??
