I like the size, simplicity and price of the Bronco but it has no ummph.
Would it be worth it to drop a more powerful pick up in there?

If you really like the bass then I don't see why not. A lot of people will say you shouldn't put a bunch of money into a cheap bass, but if you dig the way it plays then why the hell not.
have you messed about with the pickup heights? i know at least one person on here changed the pickup but then went back to the original one.
also, search for the "m2b2" club (short scale fender/squiers) there's a few modded bronco's in there!

I don't have one but I've been tempted because one can be bought quite cheaply and it's a short scale bass. I just know (or maybe assume) I wouldn't be happy with the pick up in it. Maybe messing w/the height would do the trick.
To me, putting a better pickup in a Bronco is like hating the weak-ass singer in your band, so you buy her a better microphone.
I just bought a black Bronco on Ebay this weekend - should arrive around the end of the week. I've played them before and they sounded OK to me, but as an inexpensive bass I may eventually mod it. Depends on what it sounds like after I install Labella flats on it.
There was a Bronco that I missed on which had a Quarter-Pounder installed, and there's a review on Harmony which mentions a Bassline 6 pickup and another which mentions an EMG Select strat-style pickup. I also think a classic SCPB (single coil P-bass) pickup like the Seymour-Duncan Antiquity and Antiquity II series would work fine...and lightly used pickups like that are available on Ebay all the time. Some routing would be required for regular bass pickups - I believe the original in the bass is a strat-style pickup.
Or if you want to be radical, drop a used Gibson/Epi mudbucker-style pickup in. That would be a different look!

Throw a Strat rail style pickup in it. Artec sells some for around $15-$20, and it'll sound way better than the stock pup. Don't go for the "distortion" style ones, just a nice rail pup. GFS also sells a "vintage style" rails pickup for something like $25 or $30.
Wouldn't a lipstick-style pickup look different in a Bronco??? Might be a hoot.....

I wouldn't. These may not command a lot of resale value now, but I predict they are the next "pre cbs" valued instruments to hit the vintage market. Mod it now and you'll kick yourself later.
I put a Dimarzio "Pro-Trak" in mine and it's way nicer a "polished turd" for it. I also put a Musicmaster bridge on it(for four saddles), and some Gotoh tuning heads(7/16" posts).
Worth it? Hell yes. (Of course NOT). I have a lot of fun with my Badtz-Master!
