You are correct! Sorry, I hadn't noticed those options are missing from the Mercury, as they are present in my LA Lady and Ultrawave. That's rather odd they did it that way...

I have the Boss GT core 1000 and find it fantastic. You'd be very hard pressed to run out of effects in it. My core sound is input HPF, Frequency Divider (low frequency stays clean, with high frequency going through the effects chain), compression, Amp modelling, Noise Gate, Output HPF/LPF...

I have an older Samick Valley Arts passive 5 string, and I have to use a level similar to yours. But my Fender blacktop jazz (with two P pickups), that requires +4 to +6, so there is obviously quite a difference in pickup volumes (10db in this example!).
