One of the revelations to me this past week has been just how good the Noise Suppressor algorithm is in the Core. It's the first noise suppressor or noise gate I've heard in my life that doesn't stomp all over my signal and choke it to death. I'm using it now as a matter of course, even though I don't play high gain styles, normally.

I don't know if the Core is using the same algorithms as the new NS-1X pedal, but it's still really good, and I'm hoping the the NS-1X software makes it into whatever replaces the GT-1000 series, or (heaven forfend) a firmware update for the GT-1000 series.

The one big complaint I have about the Core is that it's impossible to see the gain reduction meters in use, and nearly impossible to see them even when just sitting down to program the thing. The BC-1X, CP-1X, and NS-1X have those big beautiful bright gain reduction meters, and if I could afford the pedalboard space, I'd continue to use those as separate pedals, just for the metering.
 
Just to elaborate a bit more on the limitations of the GT-1000 series, the limitations are in a few different areas. Most of this will apply more to guitar users than bass users, for reasons which will be easily discernible.

First of all, if you want to use the Core to feed both PA and stage rig in stereo, you will need four outputs, and if you use four outputs on the Core, you give up the ability to use the two effects loops, because the Sub Outs are the FX Sends.

Second of all, the GT-1000 Series has:
one dedicated Reverb block
one dedicated Master Delay block
one dedicated Chorus block (that for reasons unknown to Science is actually less full featured than the Chorus that can be used in the general purpose effects blocks)
four dedicated Delay blocks (no one really knows why)
only two dedicated drive blocks
and only three general purpose effects blocks
in addition to a whole bunch of other dedicated effects blocks

Now, the advantage of the GT-1000 series is that it is designed in such a way that you can turn every possible effects block on and not run out of CPU power, a feat which no other multieffects unit on the market can match. The disadvantage is that if you can't fit the signal chain you want into the number and type of blocks the GT-1000 series offers, you are out of luck.

You want two Reverbs? Too bad. Reverb cannot be assigned to any block other than the Reverb block. Mostly the limitations of the effects signal chain are going to be in the fact that you have only two dedicated drive blocks and three general purpose blocks.

But the Neural Quad Cortex costs 3 times as much as the Core, uses more than 3 times as much power (12 V @ 1800 mA minimum for the QC v. 9 V @ 670 mA for the Core) and is more than 2.5x the physical size, so you can buy two Cores for $1200, and still have a smaller pedalboard that uses less power, and take home $600 change out of the price of a Quad Cortex, which still doesn't have access to Boss' exemplary proprietary effects.

So, if like me, you want to have two Main outs with IRs to feed the FOH, two Sub outs without IRs to go to your stage rig, and still want to have the two effects loops, and more than two drive blocks and three general purpose blocks, one easy way to do this is just get a second Core, and have one handle the front end with effects loops, and the other handle the back end with the four outputs.

Although you obviously cannot move blocks between the devices, you will gain more than enough flexibility to make up for the extra two pedals' worth of space on your board, at the cost of about 4 average regular pedals.

If you use MIDI controllers, you can even control them both at once from the same MIDI switcher. Personally, I'm sticking with the manual footswitches, because they are sufficient for my needs, robust, and low power consumption and complexity.

Anyway, as I said, most of this won't really be applicable to bassists, as bass does not tend to require the level of effects that guitar often demands. One Core will do more than most bassists will ever use. But, it's worth talking about, because it took me several days of intensive study of the GT-1000Core programming and the Boss Tone Studio software to figure all this out.

But, the result? So far is *killer*. I never thought I'd be happy with an all-digital rig, but while I'm not selling my amps just yet, I think this is the way forward for me, definitely for guitar, and maybe also for bass.

Talking about competing products online is difficult, because most people don't have the money to own all of them and really get into the details, so the majority of people talking about multieffects/modelling units online are just being fanboys for the unit they bought, without really trying to understand the limitations and benefits of each one.

If you are considering a multi-modeler, you should probably download the owner's manuals for each and every one and pore over them until you are comfortable with what they can do and cannot do. I've done quite a bit of that myself, just to make sure I'm making a choice I'm going to be happy with.

I'm sticking with Boss, because I happen to really love certain of Boss' proprietary effects algorithms, and Boss has the longest track record in the industry for quality and reliability among the companies currently making multieffects units. I've been using Boss pedals for nearly 35 years, and Roland products for nearly 40 years—I bought my Roland SH-101 synthesizer in 1985 at Manny's on 48th St in Manhattan, when I was in high school—and they haven't let me down, yet.

I'm sticking with the Core, because comparing it to all of Boss' other effects units, it stands head and shoulders above the rest of their product line, with very few limited exceptions where other Boss pedals may have one specific feature that is better.

I do not recommend anyone doing this setup, but I like to share my real world experience: I power my Core with one outlet of a Cioks DC7 for almost 3 years now. I 'overcharge' that outlet by 1,5% , but the 'overcharge' LED of that outlet does not indicate any problem.

Some time ago I finally managed to set up a patch where there are 3 drives (one under each footswitch) but they switch 'excluding' (meaning only ONE can be active at a time). This took me 9 assigns which is kind of ridiculous for such a simple wish/task, but it was my only real gripe with the Core so I am very happy!

@amper: your posts made me laugh! I did not know one could be a bigger fan of the Core than I am, but I think you are haha :thumbsup:! Please keep us posted about that 2 Core adventure ('even' if it is for guitar, there is always something to be learned about the device). I am curious, do you MIDI switch one Core with the other to 'preset-sync' them?

Is this lower input level for basses? What I saw in the manual is to target peaks to hit near the triangle. But my active basses can't hit that level unless I set the level to +14 to +16, which seemed odd to me.

I have an older Samick Valley Arts passive 5 string, and I have to use a level similar to yours. But my Fender blacktop jazz (with two P pickups), that requires +4 to +6, so there is obviously quite a difference in pickup volumes (10db in this example!).

I've read this entire thread right through, and thought I'd go back through and re-read again. Some great tidbits in there for sure...

I've seen a few videos of split frequency, and keeping the low end and nice and clean and unaffected (perhaps some light compression?), and using the higher band for effects. Somewhere around 250hz seems to be the magic number. Keen to have a play around and see how that sounds. Have you guys had much experience with this?
 
Thought I should share some of my musings, and how I use it, after having this pedal for a year and a half.

I play in a mainly ballad band with some light rock. I mainly play a 5 string with black nylon taper strings which gives a nice soft sound for the ballads, with minimal string noise when moving around the frets (almost fretless in that sense).

My main patch is switching between two amp types ("natural" for the ballad songs, and "concert" (SVT) for the rock songs). I use the Core in stomp mode so can use the 3 foot pedals to toggle between amp modes, and bring in and out a couple of effects as needed (chorus and overtone octave.

My signal chain is Empress Bass Compressor (always on) > MXR Thump (eq/echoplex preamp) > GT-1000 Core > Switchcraft 314DI (passive) > PA. I use a BOSS FS7, which has two switches, one for my tuner (I'm too clumsy to simultaneously press the two switches on the core!), the other for cycling through the two or three patches I typically use. I wouldn't like to use these for an effect, as I wouldn't know if the effect was on or off, as there would be nothing shown on the display.

In effects loop 1, I can swap in and out different pedals as I like (TC Electronics Brainwave Octaver/ Boss OC2 Octaver/ Digitech Bass Synth Wah etc). The core is great, as whatever pedal you use can be easily moved around the signal chain.

Effects loop 2 has the send out to my stage monitor (I go ampless these days) - I use the little Behringer personal monitor B205D, or the B207MP3. These work great! I also use send 2 for my headphones when practising at home, and use return 2 as my aux input for playing along with you tube.

When I'm warming up at the gig, and don't want my "doodling" of scales going out the PA to the poor audience, I turn down the OUTPUT LEVEL knob (that effects the main output), and then I can use my send 2 into my stage monitor. I also use the OUTPUT LEVEL during soundcheck to mix my own level into the band mix (our singer tends to set and forget or volume levels on the mixer), so it's just easier if I do that myself.

In setting up a patch, it's probably easier to do initially on the computer. But I do think it's important to be very familiar with adjusting patches from the unit itself, so that it can be done quickly (and stress free!) in a gig situation. The effects themselves are easy enough I think to adjust, with some of the input output type configurations a bit more confusing to find the right location in the menu system. Boss is a bit quirky with some of their menu labels and some of the parameters can be found in two places which adds to the confusion at times! I like to move all the effects that I'm not using, along to the far right off the signal chain, so that they require less scrolling if you need to adjust one of your in use effects.

I like to change the display (with the arrow button) to show the effects under each foot switch. I only wish that Boss would put in the software that it might flash for a few secs in large letters after a patch change. I only use two or three patches, so it's not a big deal, but would still be nice to have.

Effects wise, I think I'm not particularly fussy I guess. I had a Boss MS3, before the core, so I'm comfortable with digital drive sounds and the boss effects. The effects are all more than good enough for me, but I totally accept there are probably better high end individual effects. If there's anything external required, then the core has two effects loops, which is awesome. I love the TC mash pedals, so it's quite fun using a Brainwaves Octaver or a Flashback 2 delay in those slots. Everything has clean blends, so should all be useable for bass, and of course, you could always use a divider block with a frequency split to keep a nice low end. I do use an external compressor, but the inbuilt one is perfectly fine, and the little metering LEDs at the top of the display makes it super useful to setup (one of the main reasons I bought the empress compressor was for it's metering LEDs).

The AIRD amp and speaker modelling is pretty cool to get into, and sounds good to my ear. It's nice not lugging around a big heavy amp and speaker. The advantage of having multiple digital rigs in one, is awesome, especially if you play different genres and require different sounds.

Overall, I think the Core is a fantastic price of gear, allows for a nice compact pedalboard (I use a duo 2.1 Warwick Rockboard pedalboard which is around 470mm long by 150mm high. So much versality, for such little space! I have my DI (it has a very small form factor) and power supply mounted underneath. Sure it has some compromises (like all things in life), but it sounds pretty damn good, has most things you'd ever need, and allows for flexible routing options internally and externally. Once you get over the initial menu layout and INPUT OUTPUT setups ( LINE/PHONES, RECORDING, amp settings confusion etc), it is totally worth the effort to get to understand. I love mine and am very happy with how it works for what I do musically.
 
Here's a tip if you want to bulk Initiate all the User Presets.


1. Create a User Preset that has been Initiated and copy it to a Live Set.

2. Create an Initiate Live Set and move the Initiate Patch to the Live Set.

3. Select all the Initiate Patches in the Live Set.

4. Then mouse click and move them over to the User Presets to overwrite them.

So, two notes can be held and played as swells with the expression pedals, on top of real-time playing.

That sounds super cool, need to give that a try. I did experiment with bumping feedback to 100 when you pressed a switch so al the delays build and build which was cool, need a comp after to stop it blowing your speakers though

I’ve had the GT1000core off my board a while since I got an HX One and needed to be more selective about what I squeezed onto it. Just rebuilt my board with the CORE on again and really do love it.

The effects are a little plain at times in comparison to the stuff on the HX but in terms of utility you can’t really beat it.
 
In my opinion, the Core clearly sounds better!

Yeah I wouldn’t necessarily disagree, the HX just has some more interesting stuff going on out of the box I think. Some of the delays and modulations in there would probably be doable with the CORE but would take a while to set up manually.

The Noble emulation is really nice too on the HX, much better that the preamp options on the CORE in my opinion.

I have the GT1000 but what I hear in comparison videos the delays, reverbs, envelope filters and pitch effects sound better in the HX Stomp. They sound fairly digital in the GT and more analog in the HX Stomp. Pitch has a bit better tracking too in the Stomp.

As for amps the Boss GT wins for a more natural feel than the Stomp. That’s my impression anyway. What do you all think?

I don’t really use effects on bass, but I find it very hard to imagine reverbs and delays sounding better on an HX Stomp, when Boss is well-recognized as a market leader in these areas. I’m willing to allow that it’s possible that envelope filters and pitch shifting effects might be better, because I don’t use those, at all, not even on guitar.

But, there’s just no comparison at all between the Core and the HX Stomp when it comes to general utility. The Core costs $100 less and can run 3-4 times as many effects blocks simultaneously as the HX Stomp, which is limited by CPU power to no more than 6 with the original firmware, 8 with newer firmware, and possibly even fewer, depending on which algorithms you choose.

The HX Stomp might be an OK investment if you happen to need a small number of particular effects that it does well, but it simply cannot do overall what the Core can do.

To my ear, on its own, the HX sounds OK but in a band mix, the Core just sounds clearer.

The Noble emulation on the HX is the best clean preamp I’ve tried on a modeller so far, subtle but just does some really nice tone sweetening. Aside from that though I was never overly impressed with preamps on HX though.

I’d still say on a side by side comparison the Core sounds as good or better than the HX in terms of quality and clarity personally. The HX however has a lot of stuff I like out of the box that would take me a lot more time to configure with the Core using multiple fx. It’s got some stuff like the Retro Reel too which I’ve been trying to imitate on the Core with little luck.

This guy has a really good comparison between GT1000 and HX Stomp of all effects, no talking (on guitar though). To my ears the delays and reverb and pitch effects sound better on the HX Stomp. What do you think judging from this video?
