Double Bass RHCP, Radiohead, Beatles, and MGMT DB Arrangements

I heard an interesting quote from a very wise man who said "We should take our responsibilities seriously, not ourselves."

Double Bass Question for all those playing basses with long string lengths

I would start small with the practicing time, you have to find out what feels right for you. Why play such a huge instrument if you don't have to? I'm 6'4, have large hands and my 41.5 inch string length is certainly big enough for me.

Double Bass Bach Second Suite down a 4th

The second suite is usually played at pitch along with the first suite. If you feel you can play the suite better a fourth down then by all means go for it, it's your audition.

    Double Bass Thumb position problems

You should try the thumbnail on the string(it's half thumbnail and half skin). Check out what Edgar Meyer is doing, I think putting the nail on the string puts the hand in a very strong position.

    Double Bass Thumb position problems

Hi Will, For you to obtain the best vibrato, you have to understand how your hand will work in the most strong, effective and efficient way. If you let the muscle under your left thumb strain(or maybe more generally just become overly tight) by having an "open" hand then you sacrifice...

Double Bass going in point of the thumb in TP

If these were played at a slow tempo, I think 1 (transition to thumb after the d) 1 3 1 3 2 1 (transition back)4 1 would be a strong fingering. I think it's important to realize that when you're playing around the middle register(specifically the position with your first finger on the e and 4th...

Double Bass going in point of the thumb in TP

You should never let the technique dictate the music(which I think you might be), so it's best to be flexible so you can do what you truly want to in the most musical way. Also, fingerings are dependent on context in the music. How fast are those notes? Are they all equal rhythmic value...

Double Bass Fingerboard Markers(dots)For Upright Bass

The dots aren't used all the time by Edgar Meyer, they're there to help him if he needs to play a note(s) that would otherwise be difficult to find in a prompt manner. He doesn't advocate a strong dependence on them, they're there for times in music where they can give him a reference point...

    Double Bass Thumb position problems

Experiment with putting your thumbnail on the string(this helps to have your thumb not unnecessarily touch another string), get a teacher and check out videos of Edgar Meyer playing. Try to take note of things like where his thumb hits the string, how far he opens his hand(generally his hand...

    Double Bass 6th Cello Suite

You could play it well at pitch, but many sections start to sound silly because they're so high up on the bass. When someone goes to hear a bass they don't expect to hear you play in the highest register so frequently, it would be like hearing a violinist play at the edge of their fingerboard...
