    If “The Dude” played bass…

The Dude plays a P-bass cobbled together over several years from whatever parts he could get for free. The action is atrocious and the strings might not even be on there in the right order but he can still groove on it pretty well. Walter has some insanely specific bass that was the exact...

I quit a band because they wouldn't play the right chords on a song.

This is the sticking point for me. It's not necessarily a big deal to change a chord or two in a cover song, especially if it's a relative major or minor (we can fix that in the low end!). But that major chord is a very intentional choice in the song's composition, and taking it out just makes...

What is your significant other's attitude towards your bass playing?...

I know better than to try to talk with my wife about bass gear or try to play something for her on solo bass. She's extremely indifferent to stuff like that, and we generally don't listen to the same music. But having said that, she comes out to see my band almost every time we play even though...

    My first album... finally!

    Bored bass of the day

That's gorgeous! What strings do you have on there?

    Would you take this gig?

No way in hell would I take a gig with no drummer, no setlist, and no prior experience with the other musicians. But if that kind of thing doesn't bother you, I guess go for it!

Did I screw up, or am I a hero?

Total dick move. He and his wife overreacted, but you humiliated him in front of the crowd. An apology would be the classy thing to do.

    How bad were you...

If by "gigging" you mean my first regular church gig, I was terrible. If you mean my first band that played at bars and vineyards for paying customers, slightly less terrible.

What do say when people ask about your band?

I say our frontman was raised on Van Morrison and Marvin Gaye and more recently got into Amos Lee and David Gray, and then we try to channel all those influences into original songs played by a drums/bass/acoustic-guitar trio.

    band song selection

Go ahead and make your suggestions, but be aware that your band already has a method in place for choosing songs, and the method has worked so far. Sometimes people are resistant to change, and they might not want to do the songs you suggest. Any time you suggest a change to a group (especially...

    Annie Clements

She also played on Amos Lee's album Spirit and tours with his live band, and also just happens to be a really good singer.

    Are the Grammys still relevant?

"Music shouldn't be political?" Care to elaborate on that?
