I think you're better off just going for a MIM...or just dishing out the cash for a CIJ or MIA. The highway 1 and American specials are just hyped up mexican basses...assembled in USA. Don't believe me? note the color option of "candy apple red" in the american specials as opposed to Candy...

I play in a pop punk band. I use the black 1.14mm Dunlop Tortex jazz III's. I like the fact that they're small because I always found myself "choking up" on the normal shape picks. So the Jazz III's just fit the way I like them to. (Weird preference for bass I know...)

They're pretty solid instruments. $299 is a great price. Put some Suhr or Lollar pickups in there and sound like a monster.

I would suggest a new Squier CV Pbass or a used MIM Fender Pbass. Theres just something about playing a Pbass with a pick through an SVT. Its simply rock n roll.

I'm always diggin on maple fretboards. I do believe maple is a bit "snappier" in tone. But my real opinion is that there is a huge "feel" difference. It seems that all maple usually has a bulkier feel and Rosewood necks tend to feel slimmer. But thats just me.

What I would like more is for people to recognize that some users play wide open with a pick. ...and for heaven's sake...run the recording through protools and be in tune!

I just do the Dimarzio clip lock strap thing. You literally screw the strap to the bass. No bullcrap about it. They're reliable. They cost around $20. Which is cheaper than paying $25 for locks and then another $20 for a decent strap. Other than that...my vote goes to Schallers. But get the...

Try Bore oil. Its used to clean clarinets. Its cheaper, does the job better, and lasts longer than lemon oil. Just put 1 drop in each fret space and wipe with a polishing cloth. Works great on dark fretboards like rosewood or ebony.
