You could replace the nut on it and string it as a piccolo bass. Standard tuning, but an octave higher. Look for piccolo bass string sets online.

Pickups and electronics are all gonna be a matter of personal preference. I personally am an EMG guy, but I haven't heard much good about Aguilar pickups. Bartolinis are always a good choice. As for a preamp, how many holes for pots do you have?

I've always found Markbass to be heavily "colored" in sound. I use a Carvin half stack at home, which IMO is very neutral. It may just be the floor models, but they all sounded boomy unclear to me.
