    Wenge neck

What kind of finish does not darken the light brown grain? I used a wenge fretboard last year and after I put teak oil on it, it almost looks like ebony from 5 feet away. You can still see the grain if you look closely.

I will have more time in mine because I am figuring out every step as I go. I have spent enough time making templates to have built a guitar. I built a body out of plywood and pine just to figure out how the original pickup system worked. I still have the machine work on the bridge and tailpiece...

Thanks Bruce, I have always admired your work and research on scroll basses. I enjoyed looking at all the pictures on your website. As you noted it is not like building a Fender inspired bass. Even the templates are more complicated. I am trying to stay as close to the original as i can although...

I drilled a couple of holes with a forstner bit to give me a place to start the jig saw and a break at each end to avoid sharp turns with the jig saw. Next I used a jig saw to rough cut out the intereior chambers in the body center.

    Alternatives to Lacquer?

I have used Behlens Nitro on several guitars and I have used catalized automotive lacquer on 2 guitars. The first one was metal flake and I needed the quicker build to cover the flake. The advantage of the automotive finish is the quick drying time. With cat finish you can level sand and buff...

How to make grain jump out more with a transparent blonde finish?

Here is one I did with nitro over shellac. The body on this one is pine. I used a coat of shellac (garnet & blond mixture) sprayed to get an even coverage that was lightly sanded back. For the color I mixed mixol white for solids and some blue dye for color in clear shellac. The color coat...
