What kind of finish does not darken the light brown grain? I used a wenge fretboard last year and after I put teak oil on it, it almost looks like ebony from 5 feet away. You can still see the grain if you look closely.

Wenge is also known as African splinter wood.

I finished cutting out and routing the interior chambers on both body centers tonight.

I drilled a couple of holes with a forstner bit to give me a place to start the jig saw and a break at each end to avoid sharp turns with the jig saw. Next I used a jig saw to rough cut out the intereior chambers in the body center.

This is the template for the chambers in the body center.

I clamp my outside dimension template to the body center and route the outside dimension with a straight follower bit.

I used copper rod just as you describe and I am going to replace it because it is not as visible as contrasting colors. Depending on the level of polish and the lighting the metal markers can disappear on you in stage lighting. I won't do it again.

If you don't want to or don't have the tools to do it you can buy a radiused fretless board from LMI if they have the wood type you want. (not sure if they do 6 string bass)

Like some others I clamp body blanks, tops and stuff like that for 1 to 1.5 hours and then unclamp and clean off the squeeze out. I leave neck blanks and fretboards clamped longer, usually overnight.

Very similar but the real builds will look pretty much like an Ampeg scroll bass. The bodies and necks are going to be curly maple with ebony fretboards. I am planning on a magnetic pickup in the middle along with the under bridge mystery pickup.

I threw this body together out of pine and birch plywood to test the pickup design before I cut up all the nice maple for the actual builds. I will probably give this one to one of my sons or put the squier back together and sell it.
