Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats/ Big in Japan?

Just did a quick search for these strings on Amazon marketplace and noticed a profusion of sellers based in Japan. Does this string have some sort of niche popularity there? I'm curious about these sorts of trends, like when I found that the Opera browser was for a long time something of a...

    Yamaha BB1000

Yes. It is neck-thru. From what I've read, that's the difference between the triple-digit and quadruple digit model designations.

    Yamaha BB1000

Cool. The reason why I was asking is that I found one for $500, but I saw price figures much lower than that when I looked up the model in the Harmony Central review database. Danke schoen.

    Yamaha BB1000

I haven't posted for a while and it's great to be back. I'm interested in a getting a BB1000 from the 1980s. What should I reasonably expect to pay for one In US dollars?

Name a bassist that everyone likes.

Well, reggae isn't for everybody, but if you dig that roots sound, Aston "Family Man" Barrett is it. Also, Paul Chambers.

    Nathan East is everywhere!

I was kinda surprised because logistically, it would seem easier to fly Will Lee in from NYC than to fly Nate in from LA, but whatever. East is a beast.

    Nathan East is everywhere!

I was just watching this video from yesterday's Obama inauguration concert and who do I see holding it down but NATHAN EAST!!?!?!? :bassist: :hyper: Obama events have some seriously awesome bass. Before he walked out in Chicago for his electoral victory speech, they were playing "Higher...

I don't know if I already saw Rainey & Purdie. I also would like to add Stevie Wonder and Stevie Wonder. They make a great team. (:

Walter Becker - Circus Money !!!!

Personally, I'm just getting deep into that record right now. I love the reggae aspect of it. I also think that the record is a great rebuke to those who criticized Keith Carlock's performances on the last two Steely Dan albums as being too "canned" or "drum machiney" or whatever. I think...

    Anthony Jackson

It seems that Abe was GRP's main guy on the low end. Is this true?

    Anthony Jackson

I like the Ivan Lins stuff that I've heard from the studio versions, but one thing that always gets me is how much the "Harlequin" album seems like Grusin and Ritenour trying to sound like the Pat Metheny Group. Maybe that's why I like it so much.... anyway, who plays bass on "Harlequin?"

    *LIFE CHANGING MP3 HERE*Jamerson tracks isolated..what a TONE!...foam or palm muting?

I think it was Rainey's weird one-fingered alternate picking method.

Who played in Kenny G live?

I prefer the live stuff when it comes to 80s Miles. The studio stuff was just way too stiff and programmed for me.

Who played in Kenny G live?

Yeah. Marcus makes music with an edge that is really uncommon in most "smooth jazz." He also has the sessionman background that makes any smooth jazzer respectable. The Miles Davis background makes him unparalleled in the genre.

Who played in Kenny G live?

they don't become better musicians expressly FOR public adoration, but it just seems like a little love from the larger public would be a bit of compensation for their hard work, just a thought. And how could you call a man (Pat Metheny) who used Jim Hall's unique style as a launching pad...

Who played in Kenny G live?

I believe that the remarks on this thread that are perceived as elitist stem from a kind of backlash, at least when it comes to American forum members like myself. In America, populism is very strong. There exists a kind of aesthetic tyranny of the common man, such that the tastes of the...

Who played in Kenny G live?

I also want to make it clear that I am open to persuasion. I think I may take up Vail on his "open invitation" to attend a Kenny G show. I'm really not a tool, and it is really great that Vail is offering this opportunity.

Who played in Kenny G live?

In response to the above post, while I have mercilessly ripped into Kenny G, I actually am civil to Vail whenever he posts. I asked him a few questions in some other posts, and he seems like a nice guy. It's just that I'm not a fan of Kenny G, and I apologize to Vail if my willingness to be...

Who played in Kenny G live?

I love that song! I'm a huge RT fan, and even though I play electric, Danny Thompson is one bass beast that any bassist should listen to, whether it be with RT or John Martyn. Fabulous jazz-based melodic lines, full tone, taste. If only I could throw together with him behind Joni Mitchell...

yeah. I had to play really close to the bridge to avoid being gummed up by the low tension and stickiness.

    TI Jazz Flats questions

I would just like to add a question to this already-active thread. I think I may have run into the TI Jazz Flats at a guitar shop earlier today. I was playing an Ibanez SRX bass and the strings were flatwound, but they were very thin gauge and REALLY sticky. They had a very mellow sound...

Favourite albums of 2008 so far

    Steely Dan

does anybody toy with the idea of throwing together dream lineups for a Steely Dan album or tour? Here's one of mine! Simon Phillips or David Garibaldi: drums Anthony Jackson: bass Larry Carlton: guitar Greg Phillinganes: keys Randy Brecker: trumpet Branford Marsalis : alto sax Chris...

    Steely Dan

In fact, I think that when it comes to horn arrangements, Fagen's arrangements on "Nature" were BETTER than Tom Scott's arrangements on "Aja."

    Steely Dan

I was wondering why people seem to pride themselves on bashing the new stuff. Admittedly, I hated Everything Must Go. But Two Against Nature is up there with Aja, maybe not in the bass department, but in everything else.

    Steely Dan

I'm kicking myself for not seeing the solo tour. I saw Steely in 2006 and 2007, but I think it would've been wiser to see Fagen solo, then the Dan because of an almost completely different playlist.

Dave Matthews Band!!!.....? (Live at Central Park)

Two years late, but yeah. That's the thing about DMB. If they cut out the sax and the violin, DMB might be passable. Both Carter and Stefan are solid players, but with those guys, it is a dealbreaker. I mean, it's just the most cliched stuff over and over and over and over and over again ad...

Steely Dan does the UK - an open question to Bruce Lindfield

Actually, maybe he could. I remember hearing that he was a London studio guy before he rose to fame with Tony Williams and Miles. He even played on that "Winchester Cathedral" song. But of course, Jimmy Page was also a London studio guy, and I can't imagine him with the Dan at all. Now...

Steely Dan does the UK - an open question to Bruce Lindfield

Honestly, John McLaughlin is way too chops-intensive to play guitars in Steely Dan. I don't know who would handle the bulk of the guitar work, but I think David Gilmour could play a great solo or two. Heck, he was spotted at the London Steely Dan show, as was Sir Paul.

Steely Dan does the UK - an open question to Bruce Lindfield

Somebody post some links so I can hear these guys. I've never heard of most of them! I guess most of the British scene is simply unknown here in the States. What are your thoughts on the rhythm section I threw together?

Steely Dan does the UK - an open question to Bruce Lindfield

but I mean, Mark King? That would be like Eddie Van Halen or Billy Sheehan a Steely Dan record.

Steely Dan does the UK - an open question to Bruce Lindfield

Mark King would never be on a Steely Dan record. Now, Andrew Levy.... that could work.

Steely Dan does the UK - an open question to Bruce Lindfield

I think that would be a solid tribute to Steely Dan, but I was thinking of an actual Steely Dan record made in London....
