    TC Electronic BG250 problems poll

That "NTC 10D-11" is an inrush current limiter/surge suppressor. The damage shown it the picture above shows that it did its job. Kiss it, throw it away, and solder in a replacement. I buy them in bulk, but they are about a buck per if you buy one at a time. The "preamp" issue isn't. What...

NBD: I gotta stop buying basses...

Yes, Samick built 505 basses in the plant where this critter came from. Do not be surprised if the pickups are actually Kent Armstrongs. By the way that bass is probably 18-20 years old! Decent preamp, but I'm looking for something with a little more headroom...but I don't want to hose the...

What was your first amp (old guys only) Pt 2

Hmmm, 1974 or 75 ,Vox combo amp, I think it was 50 watts, 1 x15. Had a switch on the back that supposedly gave you an "E" to tune to. Swapped that for a Ampeg portaflex, 1 x 15, swapped that for a Bassman 50 with a 2 x 15 cabinet, swapped for (starting to see a pattern here?) a blue sparkle...

Whats the appeal of a headless bass?

I had the great fortune to own a Newburgh-built XL-25, narrow spaced, in white. Nothing else plays like it, nothing else sounds like it (especially through the rig that I had; GK amplification, JBL top cab with 2-8s and a titanium horn, JBL 18 sub in a ten-ton cabinet. I would sell my soul...

Losing a load of power on the PA.

That's easy; just use a mono cable in socket 'A'. The bass maker has 'summed' the two outputs there by doing what is known as 'normalling' the B socket...if it isn't used, the signal routes right down to the other socket directly.

Do you think that vinyl is making a comeback?

...I am educated in the science of sound reproduction, digital recording technology, and most especially, psychoacoustics. I was most surprised when my doctoral hypothesis FAILED as a result of the research project. I thought that the brain would round off the squares and any difference would be...

Do you think that vinyl is making a comeback?

"I'm talking about simply reproducing a continuous electronic waveform. " That's the point...digital simply CAN'T by its inherent nature sample a 'continuous' waveform. Even at 88,000 samples per second, it is still just pieces of the original. Does the digital 'sound' better? Yes, after a...

Question for the cat owners here

And having your 'nads cut off isn't? (just kidding) Actually, I have a son with kidney failure, and we can't risk the infection from a scratch, otherwise, they'd still have 'em. Couches are cheap.

Question for the cat owners here

If you go to a shelter or PetSmart, look for a slightly older kitty (6 months up is fine)...your cat will pick you. Absolutely get a male fixed before it even comes 'home'...otherwise, he'll spray to mark his territory. I have 4 females right now...three of them are cats. All except my...

5 Things You Never Knew Your Cell Phone Could Do

Actually, as long as your cell can 'see' a tower, 911 WILL work on a US cellphone, even if you don't have a 'working' phone or time on a prepaid. I still hate forwarded spam.

    New Ammo Bill

Not old news...it's already back in committee in several of the states again. It won't happen in PA, we're actually pretty gun-friendly here...I can open carry without a permit and it's perfectly legal. I shoot frangibles. Good luck reading any data off of that slug! Oh, and the compression...

    The *Meal Ticket* /Frontman

Our singers were always just hired ho's. Much easier to deal with that way.

Just when we're about to boot the singer...

A front man, especialy a singer, does a lot of damage to his chords at a gig, even if he has a vocal coach or teacher. Most don't want to do that kind of damage at practice. It's also hard to have the gig 'rush' at practice. Practice is just that...practice. My fat ass doesn't move off of the...

    Help! No drummer!

Reliable drummer? Isn't that an oxymoron? Honestly, 35 years in the bidnezz, and I know all of '4' reliable drummers...and all 4 are studio mavens. Go figure.

Do you think that vinyl is making a comeback?

My dissertation was actualy on the pschoacoustic differences between various audio playback formats; good clean vinyl wins hands down. Nice smooth sine waves are good for the brain. As 'good' as a CD or MP3 can sound, they are never better than looking at a picture through a window screen; it...

What "stuff" do you bring to every gig?

Couple of add-ins: Crazy glue. It can even be used to close up that slice in your finger! Fuses for the amps. A spare wall-wart with adjustable voltage settings and plugs. a spare IEC power cable (that three-wire thingy that connects all of our toys to the wall). No one has mentioned a...

    Best powered monitors/speakers?

I've notices that the powered monitors tend to get dollar-store extension cords and widowmakers (three-to-two power adapters), where the rack is more likely to get something a bit more reasonable. They are actually no less reliable than most combo amps with decent power, as long as you don't...

Yep, double-box. Greyhound Package Express (GPX) is pretty good at moving equipment around without mucking it up.

    Rechargeable 9Vs?!

The biggest problems with the rechargables are the lack of high-current capability (not always a problem in a bass), but the biggest one is that fact that a 9 volt rechargable is only 7.2 volts. get a lithium cell, and replace it once a year on your birthday.

Micing a vintage SVT..what mic do you use?

    RE-20. Shock mount. no compromise.
  29. B

    Best powered monitors/speakers?

Yeah, but at the already-started gig, you can daisy-chain to the next monitor over and adjust the mix; if the powered box fails, you're generally SOL.
  30. B

    Best powered monitors/speakers?

based on the nu,ber of powerd monitors that cross my workbench, and the 'fun' that it can be to get the right replacement parts, powered boxes = FAIL . They get abused, and they want clean power. Use small switching amps, and a small rack case for the monitor amps and EQs, and make sure...

Double Bass How long did it take you guys to become competent with double bass?

I honestly don't think I'll ever consider myself competent on an upright. The producers seem to disagree.

For the body, Mother's California Cold cleaner and glaze, and follow it up with California Gold wax. I don't know why, but for the Mexican finishes (any any of the gel-coated basses) this stuff is just killer. get it at any car store. I never use anything besides a natural lemon oil on my...
