Try a MIA Fender P bass and a MIA Fender Jazz bass. Buy whichever one sounds best to you. Both will nail the genres you mention. If you want to spend a lot of money, go for a Fender custom shop model.

Rolled fully off sounds horribly muffled to me, obviously it cuts the output of the higher frequencies to the amp, seems like it 'strangles' the bass to me. I Eq the amp for a good finger style sound then roll back a third or so for songs requiring a pick. This is with D'addario chromes on a 78...
