Volume suddenly went to max and won't turn down.

While practicing I had my volume lowered to around 50%. Suddenly it jumped to full volume and has stayed there. No knob twirling has any effect. It's full volume whether it's on or off. What could cause this? A faulty pot? My configuration is two pickups with Vol, Blend, Tone.

Bartolini Preamp Active Passive alternative wiring

My Bartolini NTMB+ F preamp is wired with a push/pull Active/Passive switch with pulled up being passive and pushed down as active. I'm wondering if I can reverse the function so that down is passive and up is active. The reason being that I've discovered that preamps in general are not my thing...

La Bella DTFs wouldn't fit on my bass. Well now they do.

I love La Bella DTFs but sadly according to La Bella, they will not fit on one of my main gigging basses. The bass was my first home build has an Allparts Bro-5 neck. I love the neck - I have two and both are stable and great to play but they have one design flaw as I see it. They have the G...

    Bergantino NXV112 Is it enough?

In Australia this little bundle of noise facilitation will cost around $1,220 plus shipping. At that price it's a gamble because I can't try one out and would have to order online. It would be very helpful to get some advice from those who know. I'm in a small old school soul/blues/R&B band -...

The Dreaded Rattle has eluded me so far....

This has me puzzled so far. The rattle is only between B and D# on the G string and nothing I've done has removed it. It doesn't sound like fret buzz. It sounds to me like the the truss rod is the offender and that was the first thing I tried. It felt fairly tight and I didn't want to turn it...

    Puzzled..?? I've a strange pot.

This is a new one on me. I built a bass that has been working very well until now. This morning I plugged in and as I wound up the volume pot a hum began at bout a 1/4 turn that stayed there until around 3/4 turn then disappeared. Below and above this point all is ok - no hum and clean sound...

    Using the effects loop.

I’ve searched here but come up with nothing that answered my question. What are the advantages if any, of running your pedals through the effects loop? I use a compressor, a Sansamp (I prefer it’s overdrive tone to the Rumble’s) and a HPF. I’ve heard that the loop functions between the power and...

    Power amp with preamp pedal.

With several pedal preamps enjoying so much popularity e.g. SanAmp, Darkglass etc are there simple one channel power amps built for bass players that use an outboard preamp?

    Enduring designs.

I’ve been watching video today from a recent festival in Australia. Not a small affair but the full production - internationally known acts, big stage, big lights, big video screens and BIG crowds of young people have a ball listening to their favourite artists most of which are also young and...

    High Tension flats

For a while now I’ve been using Chrome Flats on a couple of my basses because I prefer higher tension. I also have La Bella Deep Talkin’ flats on one and like them too for the same reason. Both of these brands are pretty expensive and not so easy to get quickly here in Sydney. Do any of you know...

Building a body to fit a neck.

I’m not a luthier but a hobbyist builder. I successfully made a body to suit a brand new un-drilled neck but I also have a parts bass I put together and I’m not happy with the body that came from another bass. Am I wise to think that I can make a new body to suit this neck that already has the...

    More speakers, more volume anomaly....

I have a Fender Rumble 50 watt head and a 4 x 10” cabinet. I’m happy with it, I goes well. I also have an old TL EV 15” cabinet that has served me very well for many years as an extension to my Music Man amp. Out of curiosity I made a cabinet comparison and found that the EV 15” is quite a bit...

HPF and 5 strings. Is it useful?

I’ve never used pedals until I recently started using a compressor. After reading about High Pass Filters and how they clean up unwanted low frequencies I wonder if any of you can throw some light on their functionality for low B basses. The B string fundamental is 31hz so would setting the...

    First attempt turned out ok

I had an active 5 string Fender Precision Deluxe but I didn’t like the wide spacing. I prefer passive basses too so I decided to make my own. I couldn’t find a Precision style pickup that had narrow spacing so I went with a Nordstrand Big Split. The body is Fijian mahogany, the neck is from...

No flood is gonna keep me from getting to the gig.

Many years ago I had a Monday to Saturday gig in the cocktail bar of a 5 star hotel in Sydney, Australia. I live in a village surrounded by a national park on 3 sides and an estuary on the other. To reach the highway to Sydney is a 23 kilometre drive that crosses a causeway over a river. There...

The answer to the burning question is......

While sitting in a hospital waiting room in Sydney I found not one but three copies would you believe, of “New Noise” magazine published in Berkeley CA. For those who’ve never heard of it and that was me up until today, it’s chock full of metal bands and their variations as far as I could tell...

Music hath the charm to soothe the (not so) savage beast

How many of you have had anything similar to these experiences of mine. It makes me wonder about the power of music. Does the melodic arrangement of musical sounds have an effect on other living organisms or is it something more basic such as the vibration or moving air that sound is made of...

    Routing to cut down weight

I’ve got a maple bodied through the neck bass that is quite heavy. Otherwise I like it and enjoy playing it. I’m looking at the possibility of routing some of the body to reduce weight. Has anybody done that successfully? Did it affect the resonance in any way? I’d love to hear suggestions.
