    Cool photo of our band

I thought I'd share this cool photo recently taken of our band. We were playing an outdoor evening gig and one of the audience members sent us this shot the next day. Coincidentally, we are playing a barn dance this weekend so we used it as the cover photo for our poster :)

Traynor SB110 vs Fender Rumble 40

Looking for a small amp with a little more boost than my Rumble 40 and have been eyeing a used Traynor Small Block 110. Much as I love the 40, I find just a bit too much of a gap between it and the 200 and I'd like something that I can use at certain gigs where the 40 is a little overwhelmed and...

So what Yamaha bass did I just buy?

Just bought this bass locally. Have no idea what it is, but it looked nice and the price was right. Yamaha experts?

    Our crazy Halloween party

OMG, it was so much fun last night to return to almost a sense of normalcy. We hosted our own Halloween party under an event tent last night at a waterfront resort restaurant. Our all-star band consisted of Austin Powers, Dr. Evil, Ozzy Osbourne and the Grim Reaper. People were literally losing...

Why doesn't Yamaha make a short scale bass?

Yamaha makes great some beginner basses, but no short scale models. As a short scale player, I would absolutely love a nice 30" scale RBX. But the only short scale Yamahas I have ever seen are vintage models. Anyone know of a reason why Yamaha has not jumped into the short scale market?

Is my friend a bad person?

So my friend - I'll call him Bob - told his wife yesterday that he had to take one of his basses down to the shop to have some work done on it. Then he took an empty bass case, kissed her goodbye, loaded the case into his car's trunk and headed to the store. At the store Bob tried out a bass he...

Played a front yard gig for my neighbours

With social distancing mostly still in effect here my band has decided to keep busy by playing free outdoor gigs in the place of our usual Saturday morning practices. We do these gigs outdoors and socially distanced from each other. Both our guitarists play acoustic guitars and backup vocals...

Stupid newbie question from an old fart with ancient laptop & interface

Please go easy because my audio interface recording experience is one day at this point. I've been laid off from work and have some time on my hands so I am looking to learn a bit about recording my own music. This is not for publication of the music, but just to learn how to use Audacity, mix...

Thinking of building my own bass - is this a crazy idea?

This is probably a bad idea but while raking my yard today I had a crazy thought. Last fall I had 10 very large ash trees cut down at the back of my yard due to the ash beetle. The company hauled the trees away (part of the deal on price) but they left two very large base pieces which I was...

No gigs, no practice so we had some fun and did an isolation video

Like most of you my band has been completely unable to get together for the past month and a half. For us this is almost unbelievable as in the 5 years we've been together we've either practiced or gigged almost every week. We've all been practicing individually, learning some new songs, but of...

Hosted a town street party for St. Patrick's despite all the cancellations

So our band was slated to play at our town's annual St. Patrick's Parade this past Sunday but of course as with everywhere else all the St. Patrick's parades in our area were cancelled due to the current COVID-19 outbreak. We were to set up on the front porch of the local museum on Main Street...

Mixer trouble at my band's last gig

Well it looks like my Soundcraft EFX8 has bit the dust. It doesn't owe me anything as I bought it very inexpensively used 5 years ago and it has served my band flawlessly for over 30 gigs a year, but I guess I just expected it to work forever. This past Saturday night our band was doing sound...

NBD - Ibanez Talman SS in Mint Green - TB did me in again!

I've actually had it for a little while now, but I just got around to posting about it. A couple of months ago there was a thread on TB asking whether anyone had overcome GAS and I posted a reply that I had been very strong recently but as a short scale player I was just glad that Ibanez did not...

I forgot I even had it!

So tonight I get a call from a buddy whom I've was teaching to play bass last winter. I had not seen him since the beginning of the summer because he bought a cottage and a boat and basically disappeared for a few months. So he tells me he wants to get back to learning the bass now that he has...

Looking for info on unusual Gibson SG style bass

Was in my local music shop today and they asked me if I had any idea what this Gibson bass is. It is apparently an original Gibson from the 1970s, obviously an SG style, but I have never seen these pickups. So I told them I don't know but if they could send me a photo, I bet the folks on...

Pawn shop find - the bass I couldn't play in high school

Although I only took up the bass 7 years ago at the age of 53, there was a time in my final year of high school when I attempted to learn how to play bass. I started out and took lessons on a rented 34" scale P-Bass copy with little success and then bought a Mann short scale EB-3 copy because I...

NBD - Vintage Ibanez Hollowbody bought on a whim

So I have no idea what I have here as I was not looking for a hollowbody bass and did zero research before buying. This bass popped up for sale about 10 miles from me and not many interesting basses do because I live in the middle of nowhere. It was cheap and had only been posted 2 minutes when...

Need help - simplest way to ground my Mackie Art 200A speakers?

I have a pair of Mackie Art 200A active speakers set up in my practice space that have a connection on the back for a ground. For the most part they work great, but have a small issue that I am told would be fixed by properly grounding them. However I am unsure of exactly how to ground the...

Why would anyone play a bass longer than 30" scale?

I'm serious about this. I see lots of threads about is it OK to play a short scale but never any from the other perspective. Maybe it's because I only started playing bass 6 years ago in my mid-50s and started on a Squier Jag SS, maybe it's because I get tennis elbow if I play anything longer...

Follow up to my wife stole the show thread - another guest steals the show at our Halloween gig

A few months ago I posted a thread in this forum where I attached a video of my wife singing a song with my band that got a lot of responses: My wife wanted to sing a song with us and she stole the show So in that thread there were a lot of people who thought my wife should become part of the...

My wife wanted to sing a song with us and she stole the show

So my wife - who DOES NOT sing - kept telling me that if our band would learn James Taylor's 'Steamroller Blues' she would come up and sing it. So last Sunday we were playing at our local pub and I always try to throw in something different each time we play there. So the night before I...

NBD - Bought the wrong Ibanez acoustic, and I LOVE it!

I sing lead and play bass in a band that plays both electric classic rock and acoustic coffeehouse style gigs. I generally play a short scale electric and I have a Guild B30E for the acoustic gigs. However if we are playing acoustic and standing rather than sitting, I use an electric bass, as I...

I want one! - Ibanez PNB14E... the poor man's Taylor GS Mini bass

I knew when the Taylor GS Mini came out that sooner or later someone was going to use those new D'Addario strings and make a more affordable mini acoustic bass. And here is it is... the Ibanez PNB14E. As soon, and I mean as soon as these come to Canada, I will be picking one up. I'm tempted to...

Digital vs. Analog - What do you think of the sound in this video?

Need opinions on the sound in this video. This is the Live Sound forum so, what I mean by this is the levels of each of us in relation to each other, not the performance of the band or if the video looks or sounds great. Are the vocals loud enough (or too loud) in relation to the instruments...

An artist doodled my portrait at our gig last night

And not just any artist, but a very respected Canadian heritage artist who is quite prominent in our area. She came out to see us last night as it was her birthday. She ended up staying the entire night. At one point she apparently got inspired and drew a doodle of me on the back of an envelope...

NBD - A sort of straight trade in an absolutely perfect series of online transactions

So as a short scale player I've been gassing for a Mustang P/J, preferably in Sonic Blue, but not so much that I was ready to spring for a new one. About a week ago a Sonic Blue one popped up in the online classifieds in a city about an hour from me. It included a matching hard case, was already...

NBD - Gold Tone MicroBass Fretless

Found this used in the local classifieds yesterday. It's a Gold Tone MicroBass fretless model. I've been playing it today...

My Classic Rock band goes acoustic - Warning, shorts, sunglasses, music stands & Kustom PA50 content

Our little town held it'a annual Porchfest event this past Saturday and we were one of 28 bands who played on various porches, lawns etc. throughout the town. NBD - Hofner Violin I didn't want or need, but I'm also not an idiot :-)

So when I saw a used Hofner Icon violin bass posted in the local online classifieds for less than half the price of any I've seen posted before, I had to make an offer on it. As it turned out I was late to the party and about 145th in line, but of the first 3 in line one backed out and the other...

Question on 1/4" to XLR cables

So here is the situation: My band's mixer has XLR outputs for the mains, but only 1/4" outputs for the monitors. Our monitors are QSC K12s. Simple question: Is there any advantage whatsoever in running a 1/4" to XLR cable to the K12s or are we just as well or maybe even better off to run just...

Rockin' the local St. Patrick's Parade - with video

It's a huge parade, with over 70 floats and this year there were more than 15,000 people along the parade...

Question about level setting on powered speakers when used with a mixer

I recently picked up a set of Yorkville YX15P powered speakers and in the owner's manual it states that when being used with a mixer, the output level of the speakers should be set at maximum. In fact here is the info from the owner's manual: "When a mixer drives the YX15P enclosures, the Level...
