    Unpopular Opinion (Fender Jazz)

Hiya, Weren't some of the MIJ Jazz's sold in Japan only an odd 32" scale? I think I remember seeing some at some point.

Fret Buzz : acceptable or not?

Hiya, I like to have my instruments setup so if I play light-med fingering or a thinner pick, I get no buzz however, if I play harder/heaver, I get that growl to the notes. Neck relief is the key here, too little you get buzz, too much and your action is high so you're working too hard.

Best value (bang for buck) for a P-type bass

Hiya, Best P-Bass bang for the buck, easy, a US made Peavey Fury. 10 years ago you could get them for less than $100 on Craig's all day long. It appears that people have "found out" how good they are and now they are going for about $350-400 on Reverb when and if they show up. If you don't like...
  4. Peavey Unity Series Dyna Bass

Comment by 'tomd999' on the classified ad 'Peavey Unity Series Dyna Bass'

Hiya, If I didn't already have the koa version of this I would be all over this one. The Unity series have one of the best slim profile Jazz necks I've ever played (and that's coming from a guy that has 12 Jazz necked instruments.) I've always considered these to be the prototype for the US...

    Anybody Recognize This Bass?

Hiya, I would say it's home made. The grain looks like oak but it could be ash. The pickup cavs are hand chiseled, the neck cutout radius isn't symmetrical so I would say routed by hand. (It could be an optical illusion because the pickup "route" is also off) I'm guessing here but I would say...

    Fender MIM mystery headstock hole

Hiya, I'm going to say it's an index hole for the CNC machining of the neck. When the neck is moved between stations of assembly, the hole mates to a pin on the jigs so that the neck is in the same position as to the tool head so measurements and thus tolerances don't vary between machines...

    Just one single bass?

Hiya, Not me, that's for sure. My wife says I need an intervention to stop me from acquiring more. However, I do know someone that bought a '58 P from Manny's in NYC in '60 and it was his one and only bass. Now, as instruments go, if you could only have one, I'm pretty sure that's the one you...

What is the best bass Leo ever made?

Hmmmmm, For me, I gave up a long time ago trying to figure out "The Best". Currently, I have 4 Jazz's, 3 P's, 3 PJ's and no Ray's or Sterling's (Tried several times to love them, just wasn't my thing) Of those, I would say that the 2 standouts are my '86 G&L SB-2 and my '88 Japanese Jazz...

    Most STABLE Bass Bridge

This: Bridge - G&L Saddle Lock 4-string The one on my SB-2 hasn't budged since '86 :-) For the traditional Fender style, I much prefer these over the smooth style where the saddle height screws rest on the surface. Not to mention it has 7 screws to lock down onto the body better. 203B-4 –...

Looks like Warmoth is cleaning out the closets and getting back to work

Hmmmmm, Well, looks like issues are back as this is on a bright surf green banner at the top of the page. (I would have used Sea Foam green but hey, I'm partial to it) =================================================== 4/28/2020 Recent website issues and an unusually high volume of orders...

Truss Rod Nut replacement for Fender RI 62 CIJ

Hiya, There was a thread a little while ago for a bullet type truss rod nut on a P-Lyte that asked the same question which turned out to be metric. I would suggest the same may be true of the RI as Japan is a metric based country. Tom

    Dual P Pickup Club!

Hiya, Wired like a single coil Jazz, each pair treated as one pickup. I thought about doing a G&L on it with multiple switches to reverse phase of each pickup but that just made my head hurt and would have spoiled to clean look I was going for. If I want those kind of options I'll break out the...

    Dual P Pickup Club!

Hiya, OK, just found this club, only a little late to the party. ;-) Warmoth swamp ash body in Sea Foam green, Gotoh legacy 7 screw bridge, Stew-Mac vintage pickups, CTS VV-T with a series/parallel switch, a MIJ '62 Jazz RI neck strung with EB Cobalt flats 45-105.

Looks like Warmoth is cleaning out the closets and getting back to work

Hiya, I was doing my daily check of the Warmoth.com in-stock and smoking deals page and I've never seen so many items for sale. There are demo items, maybe returns or damaged items for some great prices. If your looking to put something together, now might be a good time. Tom

    THE ULTIMATE CAT THREAD

Hiya, Here's my 3 guys, all Maine Coons from Patten Maine, a friend of ours breeds them. First up is Fenton, AKA "Big Feet" he's polydactile with 3 extra toes (and claws) on each foot. He's Jumbo sized, like a cat and a half sized cat. Second up is his brother Oscar, AKA "The Brat" And...

Questions about the Early 70s Muscle Car Experience

OK, this one might be long.... Let me preface this with at one time I was a mechanic and involved with drag racing, both on the track and on the streets. I've had many "classic muscle" cars of all brands, some were good, others were poor performers. One thing to keep in mind is that what was...

    Bassists who ride Motorcycles

Hiya, Here's mine, just as I prefer older instruments, same holds true for motorcycles and cars. First an '83 HD FXSB "Low Rider", the first model to get rear belt drive instead of a chain. It's like almost all Harley's and Fender's, has had mods... :) It started life as a 4 spd with a chain...

What bass would you like to see brought back.

Hiya, In no particular order: Fender P-Lyte in tobacco burst. (Agree with Tim S, fix the fret work and drop the gold hardware. The bridge on mine was OK but a US std string through would be a lot better) G&L El Toro. (With black krinkle coated bridge and control plate and real nickle plated...

What’s the most you ever spent on 1 bass? And was it worth it?

Hiya, I break this up into 3 categories as along my journey I've changed how I get "new" instruments. New off the shelf: $424.99 in 1986 for a G&L SB-2 black/maple with G&G case. I remember this amount as I wanted an El Toro so bad but I didn't have the 900 bucks for one and I spent at least 2...

How high or low is your action set/preference?

Hiya, Currently I'm running .080 to .065 on my fretted Leo type 34" scale 4 strings, .075 to .060 on my fretless and .100 to .060 on my 35" scale 5'er all with ~.008 relief except the 5'er, I run .010 on that. Tom

Fender Jazz or Precision bass: Which do you prefer and why?

    P Bass choices

Hiya, My recommendation would be Warmoth. For me, the ability to choose every aspect of the bass is important. Over the years I've found that I'm never really satisfied with off the rack instruments and I end up swapping parts. The problem with this is I end up paying for a lot of the...

80s fans-What bass is this? Just because I am bored...

Hiya, I still have a Pilot, have since the mid-'80's. (the "paper frosting knife" headstock shape) Yup, it's black, black headstock, fat white logo letters, black hardware, dark rosewood fingerboard, EMG's. The neck does have a different feel to it, I think it's the shape of the C profile...

    34" vs 35" scale

Hiya, I have a Peavey Axcelerator 5 that's 35" scale. I would say the only benefit I see is a slightly less floppy B. To me, the 35" is more difficult to play in the lower positions. Also, I learned to play on fretless so my fingers land 'on the frets', not between them on fretted 34" scale...

    J Neck P Bass Club

Hiya, I don't need a number, I'm already #28 however, here's an update on the black bass in post #79 and new Sea Foam P w/J neck. The black Warmoth P: Off came the MIJRI neck and Leo Q BA2 and on went a Gotoh Vintage 7 screw bridge and a unfinished Warmoth 20 fret neck, quartersawn bloodwood...

    What’s your favorite G&L?

Hiya, This is my favorite G&L, an '86 SB-2, black/maple with Lane Poor's with a 3 position selector switch W/Tone-Volume. This might be the only G&L with LP pickups in the world. The LP's made a huge difference when Lane made them for me in 1989, they are 'super wide field' prototypes, they...

Stripped truss rod nut on a Oddball Fender?

Hiya, The P-bass Lyte's were made in Japan, could the threads be metric? I've never had to repair a truss rod on a Japanese Fender so I'm in the dark however, I do own several Aria, Tokai and Matsumoku Japanese made instruments and everything on them is metric.

    What P bass should I buy ?

Hiya, If I was looking at getting another P and I wanted it to be high quality, I'd be looking at G&L SB-1 if I wanted a wide P style neck or an SB-2 if I wanted a Jazz neck. The other option I would look at would be building one from Warmoth. For me, both of these brands are outstanding...

What’s The Unicorn in Your Bass Collection?

Hiya, I remember that ad, I think it was for SWR and Lane was upset about it because when the bass came back to the shop it had small chips and scratches all over it. I think I have a copy of Bass Player with it on the back cover somewhere in the stack of mags my wife nags me about.... ;-)...

    Stripped Truss Rod

Julian, OK, so I'm going to assume the adjustment either a hex nut or hex socket, am I correct? If so, here's a few tips, if its a hex nut, make sure you're using a wrench or socket that has a thin enough diameter to fit in the truss rod cavity and onto the nut square, mechanic sockets and...

    Stripped Truss Rod

Hiya, By "Stripped" do you mean the adjustment hex/slot is rounded and a wrench won't fit on, OR when you turn the adjustment, it just spins and doesn't tighten to pull the neck straight? There is a repair forum here to post questions that a good many luthiers frequent, that would be a better...

Hiya, I've noticed that the inventory data base server has been having "issues" for the past few weeks, especially early in the day for me. Fender precision neck help

Hiya, Sorry to hear of your dexterity issues. As far as swapping necks, both the Precision and the Jazz use the same standard neck pocket dimensions and screw hole spacing so you can swap P and J necks and bodies to your hearts content. (Keeping in mind that there are some models that have...

    Fender Rumble Club

Hiya, Just finished unboxing my Studio 40 and plugging it in. (Actually, it was delivered yesterday by UPS but it was -3 degrees when they dropped it off so I let it sit overnight sealed in the box so it would warm up very slowly, and no, I haven't taken the tag or display protector off yet)...

Are Jazz Basses becoming less popular?

Actually, there are more Jazz basses available because my devious plan is coming to fruition. I've finished assembling my mind-control ray, right now it's reaching out across the Internet, seeking out Jazz bass owners, implanting subtle hints in their minds that they actually dislike their most...
