    any other "handicapped" bass players?

I worked on a toxic waste superfund site, for 22 years, without my knowledge. My employer lied and covered it up. I ended up with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, and Degenerative Disc Disease from it. The pain limits the amount I can play, but I still do alright. My...

Jazz width neck on which other basses?

EBMM does a Jazz neck, they call a SLO Special. Rickenbacker necks are pretty comfy, too. A little wider at the nut, but narrower at the body.

    Used Bass on a Budget

I don't think so. Either one can be hit or miss. I had an 07/08 MIM and it was very solid. Personally, I'd take the MIM over the CV or VM, any day.

Why is it so hard to find a Rick to try out?

New Rickenbackers tend to get snapped up as soon as they hit the wall. In fact, most are pre-ordered and never see the showroom, so it's hard to catch one. Even if you want to buy new, you might check around for a used one, on CL or something, just to try it out. You really should try one out...

    2/3 fingers "stick"

Similar to what you're experiencing, when I first started, my pinky followed my third finger around like a lost puppy. It took a couple of years to get my pinky fully functional, and many more years for it to become as adept as the other three. This is something that takes time, and you...

    Used Bass on a Budget

$300 can usually get you a used MIM Jazz, too. Not to take away from the Squier VM and CV. Those are quite nice, too.

    The Rickenbacker Club Part Eleven

The bridge just kind of stands up on the height adjust screws, and it can rock a little, head to tail. On mine, I push it to the tail side of the slot. On mine, it stays put, there, real nice. This also provides a set reference point when changing strings, in case you change them all at once. I...

Where Did You Buy Your First Bass?

I got my first bass, a Fender USA Bullet Deluxe, in 1982, from Hogan's House of Music, in Lawndale, California. It was a mom-n-pop, that had been around for decades. Nice little shop. Nice selection. Knowledgeable sales people. A short time later, Guitar Center opened a store directly across the...

Atrocious National Anthem. That bassist tho.

The Star Spangled Banner is a symbol of our nation, and revered to the point of being almost sacred. Because of that, anything other than the traditional arrangement is ALWAYS going to bother people. I say leave it alone. It's fine as-is. Save your creativity for other stuff, and just play the...

Putting a short scale neck on a MIA J or P

How about one of the Mustangs with the original style pickups? If the stock pickups don't do it for you, I've read that the Nordstrands will get you real close.

    This seem fishy?

Yep, sounds like a scam. Although they usually want to pay by cashiers check, and "can't come by, personally, because they are currently out of town on business." Another good indicator is when you put something up, late at night, and get a response within minutes. Most people with legit...

    Best bass strap?

Neotech does have a shorter version. It's a part number 8301252. But, nobody stocks it. Neotech lists it on their website, but if you pull up the order screen, it's not listed. I'm sure you could get it as a special order, though. I e-mailed their webmaster. Maybe they will update it...

    Practising, what first

Welcome aboard! Lots of helpful people here, and it's good to have you! I kind of did the same thing. I bought a bass, an amp, and a Mel Bay book, and spent two years getting nowhere. I finally decided to take some lessons, or just give it up. I found a great teacher, and the more I learned...

    Best bass strap?

I'm planning to pick up one of these. The only negative I've heard about these is that they run a little long, and I'm not one to wear my bass slung low. I suppose I could have it shortened, if it's as comfortable I've heard. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/neotech-mega-bass-strap...

Looking for something new: Mustang? Starbass? Anything?

If you're looking for a five string in a passive/vintage flavor, I'd start by looking at Precision and Jazz. In addition to only having four strings, the Mustang is a short scale. If you're looking at hollow or semi-hollow, you might want to compare the Star Bass with the Ibanez Artcore 5...

    Neck Question

The Rickenbacker is 2, 1/8" at the 12th fret. I'm pretty sure it's well inside of 2, 1/2" at the last fret. If that's something you're interested in, Jeff Rath, TB's own Ric5 does 4 to 5 conversions. You might PM him, or post something on the "In Praise of Ric5" thread.

    The Rickenbacker Club Part Eleven

Okay, I'll play... If we're going full coffee table, this would be my ultimate Ric: Three piece maple neck with purpleheart skunk stripe. Five piece body sides, quilted maple over purpleheart with a maple core, fully rounded to reveal the red stripe (to create a line around the perimeter...

    The Rickenbacker Club Part Eleven

What I'd really like to see is some 4003's with some quilted, flame, birdseye, or burled maples. I've seen some figured woods in the 4000's, 4002's, and 4004's, but the 4001 and 4003 got skipped over, for some reason. These would all look really nice with that blond fretboard, too... maybe a...

    Neck Question

I've done a pretty extensive search. You might look at Carvin and Ibanez. Those are about as narrow as you'll find. Tobias, too, but for what you would pay for a real one, you might as well have something built. A 1, 3/4" nut width is pretty much the standard for a narrow neck 5-string. I've...

So, what if Guitar Center DOES go under...

They screwed me over so badly, 30 years ago, that I never went back. I've found other sources for everything, or done without, ever since. I won't miss them at all.
  28. H

    Neck Question

I've got small hands, and I've found that there aren't any 5-strings that I would consider slim. You can convert a Jazz or Rickenbacker to 5-string, but there isn't really anything available off-the-shelf for the small handed player. The Ric runs a little wider at the nut, but narrower at the...

Do you enjoy playing in front of an audience?

To me, playing with others is the main reason for playing music, and playing for an audience is even better! The only thing better than that is getting in the zone (sometimes called the zen zone or the flow). I just wish that I could get in the zone more often. That's really the ultimate payoff...

Strings going to "wrong" tuning pegs.

Yep. I always wind all four strings down to the bottom of the post. This DOES work. The only exception is a poorly designed headstock. This has never been an issue with Fenders, and the "Fender A String Rattle" is an urban legend - simply the result of not installing strings properly. Once...

    Total newbie here

I'm not an effects guy, so this is something you need to discuss with the effects gurus... the SG has a reputation for muddiness which I've heard can need some EQ to tame it. With the limited EQ of Fender amps, you might need to include an EQ pedal in what you end up with. You're going to have...

Adam Clayton's bass on Jimmy Fallon last night

Strings going to "wrong" tuning pegs.

Non-tapered 2x2's generally have a thicker nut, and the angle is usually not all that sharp. It's strictly for looks. There's no actual benefit to it. Design-wise, headstocks like Ibanez make a lot more sense. But, would a Les Paul or a Ric look as cool with a tapered headstock? Not a chance.

What do Thunderbirds actually sound like??

UFO was an amazing band, and Pete Way will always be one of my favorite bassists. To me, Rock Bottom is one of the quintessential heavy rock tunes of all time. Too Hot to Handle, Doctor Doctor, Lights Out, and Love to Love are some great songs, too. Pretty much anything from the Schenker era...

Strings going to "wrong" tuning pegs.

Regardless of how this affects tuning or sound, there is no good that can come from placing a side load on the nut slot. If a bass is strung properly, with the string coming off the top of the bushing, there is absolutely no reason to reroute strings or to add additional string trees. And, it's...
