what kind of bass is this?-unusual

Overend Watts was and still is a great bass player. And Ian Hunter just released an album that may be his best ever. Mott The Hoople did a run of reunion gigs in 2009 at the Hammersmith Apollo that was sold out for five nights. They did another reunion tour in Nov of 2013. It was five gigs...

Bass used on Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes

Ariel Bender is a guitarist. He replaced Mick Ralphs when he left Mott to for Bad Company. Ariel is really Luther Grosvenor, from Spooky Tooth fame. He was also in Steelers Wheel for a brief period before joining Mott.

Bass used on Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes

A little late here, sorry. I have some close ups of it from the Mott The Hoople reunion gigs. I was fortunate to get to hang with Pete (Overend), and the rest of the band, for over a week during the reunion gigs. He's an extremely nice and unassuming guy. He was floored when the sold out five...

I met Kenny Aaronson last night

Kenny has been a mainstay in John Eddie's band for some time now. He also is in the latest touring version of The New York Dolls. He's a great player and a real nice guy. He loves talking music and bass in particular. A very approachable guy.

    Open Mic "Compliment"

Thanks. It's a lot of fun to play too. Unfortunately, the crowd wasn't familiar with it. I don't think it went over well. Things picked up with Tull and Ziggy.

    Open Mic "Compliment"

My band played a local open mic night last night. It was really cool and interesting. There was a house band and then a bunch of people came up and either sat in with the band or played with their own band, as we did. My band is fairly new and is down from a five piece to a three piece. All of...

Carol Kaye and why we need help protecting our stuff....

I may be wrong, and I'm certainly not a huge fan of Kid Rock, but from what I have seen of him he seems to give the original artists their due. He is always paying tribute to the original country and southern rockers. I'm assuming he pays the royalties on those two songs for "his" hit, at least...

Carol Kaye and why we need help protecting our stuff....

Tom, This is a very sad story. Unfortunately there are many musicians in the same position. Facebook "friend" request sent. With your permission, I'd like to post a link to your original post on the official Ian Hunter message board, and start spreading the word. Mark

    New Jersey Bassist Club v2.0

Hey man, I stopped by to check you guys out Saturday night. Sounded great. Unfortunately I only stayed for one song. I had just finished playing a gig up in Wantagh (sp?). I would have said hello, but I was pretty tired, and the place was way packed. You guys definitely had them rocking. Mark

Lighting things on fire during a gig?

Although I'm very familiar with the incident, I've never read this before. A very tragic read. The thing I find most interesting is that the tour manager, Daniel Biechele, immediately owned up. He didn't try to hide his involvement, or shift blame. He took full responsibility. Meanwhile, the...

Do You Think A Punk Cover Band Is Viable?

Glen Matlock did a little East coast tour in the past two weeks. I had the honor of helping out and attending almost all of the shows. He has a great band and did songs from all of his bands including recent solo stuff. It was interesting to watch the crowds. They seemed to enjoy all of his...

    New Jersey Bassist Club v2.0

If you're around, he's playing in Philly tomorrow night. I'm going to try and make it. After that he's in Baltimore and that's it for a while. Although he isn't playing bass on his solo tour, he's been out playing bass in the UK with the reunited Faces. Mark

    New Jersey Bassist Club v2.0

So, I did wind up going to the Brighton Bar with my friends bands. It was a fun night. Kenny Aaronson sat in with one of the openers, a band called Frankenstein 3000. They were a real good, fun band. Headliner Glen Matlock's band rocked. Great times. Mark

I don't get down the shore very often, and I'm not playing, but I'll be heading down to the Brighton Bar next Saturday (Sept 10th) with some friends that are coming in from the UK and playing there. I don't think I've been there in over 20years. Should be a fun night out. Mark

what bassist have you talked to

Cool thread. Off the top of my head: Rick Danko Danny Klein from J Geils Graham Maby (amazingly humble) Tom Hamilton (brief hello) Gary Shea from Alcatrazz (great guy) David Hull (another cool dude) Glen Hughes Adam Clayton (brief hello) Paul Page from Ian Hunter's current band (super...

    Markbass: what kind of people...

I love my Markbass. It sounds great. I had the pleasure of playing at an outdoor BBQ that was really just an extended jam with multiple players. I set up my rig, played a few songs and then sat in the crowd and watched/listened to a couple of extremely talented bassists use my rig. The volume...

    Control

Bluewine, I was in a very similar situation. I joined a band thru bandmix. They asked me to audition, I did and got the gig. The first few practices were cool. All of a sudden the one guitarist sends out an email that we had a gig the following week and we need to rehearse the night before. I...

    Van Rentals-Help

crijan, Thanks. That's a good bit of info. The band is coming over from the UK and only needs a vehicle for two weeks or so. So, buying was never an option, but that is interesting that it's cheaper to rent than own.

1st rock gigs for old guy

Which three tunes? I can tell you that I saw the reunion in 2009 in London and they kicked butt. For a bunch of guys in their 60's and 70's, they can rock like teens. Good to see that you (like myself) have decided to get out there. It's never too late. It definitely makes you feel younger...

1st rock gigs for old guy

Congrats. I'm a late comer myself. 47 and played my first gigs a couple of months ago. We're going thru some band restructuring, but I can't wait to get back out there. Keep it up and enjoy.

    Weirdest lineup matchup?????

Around '84 I went to a college party at some frat house in South Jersey. The line-up was Beru Revue (local party band with some success in the Philly area), followed by a new group no one had heard of called Run DMC, followed by The Hooters(80's new wave type).

    Van Rentals-Help

Top Ten, thanks for the info. Would you say they are reasonably priced? Ian's great and has still got it. He just turned 72 and rocks like a man of 25. He's going out again in the fall, but I think the farthest west he's going is Chicago, unless he gets some decent offers. Check out his...

Not sure if this is the right section, so I apologize if it's not. Here's the situation: I've been asked by a friend from the UK to help set up a small tour. One of the things he is looking for is a passenger van that can seat up to nine comfortably (5 band and 3 female back up singers)...

    A frustrating situation

If it wasn't for the $500, I'd send her a list that meets her approval. Explain to her how you really understand and appreciate her trying to look out for everyones best interests. Then I'd get on stage and play my original set list. See if she jumps up on stage and tries to stop you mid set, or...

    New Jersey Bassist Club

I just played a place called Chaplin's in Lake Hopactong. It's not too far from the Mohawk and Krogh's. I have a few friends that play those places all the time. That whole area has a great little music community. I've been playing for a while, but only in basements and garages with friends...

HOW MUCH would you have to be paid to rename your band?

How much money would it take to change our band name? Apparently not a penny. This weekend, our guitarist and self appointed band leader changed our band name and sent out a notice to our face book list notifying everyone (including the rest of the band)! Granted, we've only played a couple of...

SINGING -- As a rule, would you play in a cover band with guys that wouldn't sing?

I can't sing. I certainly can't sing and play the bass. I tried once in a band with very good friends. The guitarist moved my mic and said "do me a favor, when singing back up, back up!". We laughed and I got the hint.

    Things bassist hate.

I may have posted this before, but my buddy plays drums for the John Eddie Band. They have a song called Play Some Skynyrd, which is a very humorous take on this. The chorus is: The drunk at the back Stops me in my tracks Sends me crashing back When he says Play Some Skynyrd Play Some...

    Jaco Pastorius with Ian Hunter

Pretty sure Jaco never toured with Ian. I don't think he ever played live with him either. Ian will be 72 in a few months and he still rocks like crazy. His shows are cround two hours and he has an incredible band, including Steve Holley from Wings, Joe Cocker and many others. Recently, on bass...

    Pete Overend Watts...Amps used?

I just noticed this thread. I'm not sure what he used back inthe day. But I can find out. There is a great mag called Two Miles from Heaven that, in one issue, lists all the gear of all of the players. For the reuinion gigs he definately used Ashdowns, a pink thunderbird and a couple of other...

bassmasta1209, How is that open mic? It's in my hometown, but it's a bit late for me on a work night (I'm an old fart that has to get up way too early and drive way too far:). But, I've been curious. What kind of music is played most? Blues, new rock, classic rock, etc? Mark

Red Flags For Bass Players Looking for Work

Actually, I know some very talented musicians that do the tribute band thing because the pay can be really good. Way better than what they may get for playing originals. Personally, I wouldn't like doing an entire evening of any one band, but a lot of these tribute bands do extremely well...

New band is a hot mess

I'm going thru a very similar experience. I've just joined my first band. Within weeks of joining and learning a bunch of keyboard based songs, the band fired the keyboard player. They guy was a bit nuts, showed up almost an hour late every week and then kept stopping us in mid song to tell...
