Rockabilly bassist that don't use an upright

It doesn't matter if you play an upright or electric to 98% of the crowd at a rockabilly show as long as you're rocking a pompadour and dressing like an alcoholic mechanic on his way to meeting his parole officer circa 1954.

    In Defense of Michael Anthony...

Alex van halen is a one trick hack of a drummer. Eddie ought to be ripping on his brother. I read somewhere that Alex can not play with anyone except his brother. What a limited musician. MA is the man for putting up with those two for as long as he did.

Working bassists who have quit drinking

I did over 100 gigs for the last 3 years and guit booze in 2000. Used to be a functioning alcoholic on the way to non functioning human. The first gig I did without booze was the most nervous I have ever been. It was a crowded ballroom playing a huge gig on a Sunday afternon for a charity...

    One racist remark?

Sounds like he was testing you out to see if you were offended. If you'd have said you were not offended then he knew he had the opportunity to really let loose on the hate speech. I had a guy in my band tell an offensive joke about women on stage. And he got called out on it by a few...

Alcohol + Gigs = success?.. or failure?

To each their own. When I was coming up as a player you had your dug out and one hitter packed with the kind bud, a cigarette lit nearby, a beer on your amp, and people buying you shots. Then life happens: DUIs, heartattacks, alcoholism/addictions. I comend those who can have a couple. I'm...

Alcohol + Gigs = success?.. or failure?

There seems to be a direct correlation between those who gig a lot not doing much partying and those who gig once a month partying hard. Now that I'm in a band that plays 8 to 10 times a month none of us party at all. It's all about getting to the gig, setting up, and getting home knowing that...

Ampeg PF500 leap of faith gone wrong

I have had a pf350 for two years and had absolutely no problem even after it got rained on at an outdoor music festival. My only complaint was I needed more headroom. I got a pf500 in October. So far I've had no problems with it and like it a lot. However, all these threads make me nervous that...

Why are the Ampeg Portaflex amps so cheap?

Had a 350 for 2 years. Awesome amp, totally reliable. Got dropped and rained on at a music fest when a flash flood hit. Never an issue. Upgraded to the 500 and I love it. I've done at least 25 gigs with it since October. No issues whatsoever.

Jazz Bass Comparisons @ GC Today. Another Squier Convert.

I have a Squier vm pbass, fretless pbass, and 5 string jazz bass. I love them all and paid less for 3 basses them I would have if I bought one american standard. I'm a better player and have a aresenal of tones to pick from so I practice more. I can't wait to see what squier does next.

American Standard P or Squier CV and amp?

I had some time to kill before rehearsal so I went to my local guitar shop. I played the Squier Custom vibe jazz through a rumble 500 W combo. I had my pedal case with me so I hooked it up (Hartke Bass attack, MXR Microamp, MXR 10 band eq). The sound was so amazing. I was floored. With my...

What's better? playing with a so-so band or practicing on my own until something else comes along?

Playing "alone" these days is totally different experience. With an Internet connection, my pf500 output, and a pair of headphones, I can practice for hours and never feel bored. Once you are back in a band and all gig burn out you'll look back at your time in the woodshed with fondness. So...

The regret of choosing your day job career over music

I tried and couldn't get arrested. It was just band to band, send off the demos trying to get major-labels interest and getting nowhere quick. Then again that was during the smashing pumpkins era in Chicago, so it was a whole different ballgame back then. Nowadays it's all about putting in the...

    Is my Ampeg PF-350 enough?

Although I recently upgraded to the 500 from the 350, a word of praise for the 350 is in order. I had the 350 for two years and about 150 gigs . Even though it was raining down once I never had a single problem from that head. It is a great amp with great tone.

    Is my Ampeg PF-350 enough?

Just yesterday I upgraded from the 350 to the 500. I play through 2 svt 210av cabs for a rockabilly band. The 350 was no enough. It kept getting muddy and distorted. I've only played through the 500 for an hour or so but the extra headroom keeps my tone clean.
