I'm personally a Skullcandy fan boy and use them extensively, I highly recommend the Hesh2 and Aviator models for bass playing

Advice for first head/cab gigging rig

I would say I agree. Having a DI is always handy, but you can always supplement that later with a pedal if need be, really (sansamp, hartke vxl, mxr di+, the list goes on) But from my time in the circuit, I don't like depending too much on the house or the sound guy for the small shows, having...

    Carvin BX500 with 2x10's + 115 ?

If they're both 8ohm, you'll end up with a 4ohm load. This is probably what you want as near every bass amp head supports 4ohms, where as if you got two 4ohm cabinets, you would have a 2ohm load, and much fewer heads support that. I don't advise mixing. I mean, it's not the end of the world...

    GK Questions.

+1 I learned the hardway that a single 112 isn't enough to keep up with a loud band, two should do the trick however.

Great review, been debating a Carvin, thank you!

    Amp to 2 cabs question

Each cab will get an equal share of the wattage. In this case, you have two 4ohm cabs for a single 2ohm load, so you've got a total of 600watts, so each cab will get 300 watts - so you're safe I personally think you might be better off vertically stacking the cabinets, but some of the other TB...

Amp head and cabinet of different brands

I like the way my markbass head sounds with my markbass cabs, I love the way my markbass head sounds with my GK cab. I don't like my gk head with my gk cab, but I like it with my hartke cabs and love it with my SWR cabs, I go back and forth with my gk head and markbass cabs. Go for what you...

Sell my Ampeg head AND speaker? Or just one?

That is a good point, but if he has a 2x10 or a 1x12 he can always just supplement it with a second cab if he ever has to, so he'll have options rather than being obligated to lug around a 4x10. A single 1x12 or 2x10 doesn't cut it in my band either. Hell, a single 4X10 is pushed in my band...

Sell my Ampeg head AND speaker? Or just one?

I'd say it's easier to replace the cab for something more modestly sized. Maybe a 2x10 or a 1x12, there's plenty of light, affordable options and you could always just stack a second cab if you find yourself needing the extra power again

    My Carvin rig ...

Beware! The light weight with the incredible clarity and huge lows is hard to fight, it pays nice with a lot of heads too :) Edited for spelling.

    My Carvin rig ...

Right on, thanks for the info! How reliable would you say their heads are/what do they sound like? I've been in the market for a new head for my practice set up/back up, and for some reason my old 1001RB hasn't been giving me much satisfaction as of late (blasphemy I know)

    My Carvin rig ...

I've actually been curious about Carvin equipment, but what I'm reading it sounds like their gear is pretty heavy - I've been spoiled by markbass cabs and how amazingly light they are

12+15 / twelve inch speaker with fifteen inch speakers ?

I actually did try it just resently! I hooked up a GK 1001RB (model 1) to a GK Neo 112-II and an SWR workingman's 1x15. I used it in a small room (approx bedroom sized) in a 3 piece metal band (moderate volume for metal) and personally? I actually rather like it. I think the 15" gives plenty...

    Giving up on a brand?

Personally, I love Hartke's customer service, but I've presently found myself gigging with a Markbass rig. Still practice at home with a HyDrive though, just to support.

Opinions on Little Mark III and GK 700-II?

I agree with the tried and true "Try it before you but it" I presently have my GK 1001RB (model 1, not 2) with a GK NEO 1x12-II and a MB SD1200 with matching 4x10. I'm personally more inclined to the GK, truth be told. I think it's the cab more than the head, but the MB sounds "scooped" to me...

SOLD FS: GK Neo II 2x12 Bass Cab

How would you say this sounds compared to the Neo-112? Does it just sound like two of them in a single cab or is there a difference in tone? Sorry for the silly question just want to be sure

SOLD FS: Hartke Hydrive 112 cab

Free bump for an AWESOME cab, very impressive for such a small size. In my experience it handled the low B exceptionally for something of it's size =)

    Looking for a Bass rig

As a rule of thumb you're probably better off with a 4x10 for your genre than most other cab configurations. That being said it isn't always the case, I recently saw myself switching to a 2x12 set up for my metal band, and I'm quite pleased by my HyDrive 112's. So remember to keep your mind...

Odd Song Choices that go over well

I play in an original hard rock/metal band and thus far these have gone over really well... like, astonishingly well, everyone freaks out: Quincy Jones - Soul Bossa Nova Afro Man - Crazy Rap (Colt 45 and two zig-zags) Toni Basil - Mickey The Terminator 2 theme (over-done these days so we...

Hobbies that cost more than playing bass

Cars can sure get mighty expensive, so can computers if you get really crazy into building super computers (but is probably on the more affordable side in my book). Chasing women can also get expensive, but that's a totally different story!

Do genres kill music or do people kill music?

Let's ask ourselves: What is music? "Music is the art of well-combined sound and time." Now let's ask ourselves: What is the music business? Same answer. "The art of well combined sound and time." The right sound for the time. If people want it/like it, it will sell, because...

    Please Help? - Pantera's "The Suicide Note" Part 1 + 2

Hi guys! I tried the search function, I tried google, tried listening, and I just can't seem to land it! >.< So I humbly come to my fellow TB'ers for advice. My band has a gig at Meyer Waterfront Ampitheatre in the not-too-distant future and wanted to throw in a couple covers in the set to...

    Hartke LH500 to GK700RB

In my personal experience, the Hartke's good but the GK's better. Switched from the LH1000 to the 1001RB. Still keep the LH1000 as a backup amp. Also, GK seems to rate wattage very conservatively, those things can get LOUD. Just my 0.02

Hartke HyDrive 410 vs SWR Goliath Senior 410

Thank you so much for the advice guys! I think I am going to make the switch. They said I could feel free to compare them side by side before committing to the trade so I'll let my ears be my guide (although I normally like testing in a band setting to see how it sits in the mix, but what can...

Hartke HyDrive 410 vs SWR Goliath Senior 410

Hey guys! So here's my currenct situation: I presently have a Hartke LH1000, a GK 1001RB (mark 1), a HyDrive 410 and an SWR Workingman's 115 (I know, totally mismatched cabs, but bear with me). Lately I've been using the GK 1001RB because the LH1000 has seemed quite and weak in...

    newb question about multi-amp setups

You can do what I do: I picked up a fishman powerchord bass fx pedal. Send the unaffected signal to my bass, the octave/distorted signal into a guitar amp. Works like a charm!

    Thunderbird Club Pt.IV

Hey guys! So I'm a recent new thunderbird owner (picked up a goth thunderbird, absolutely loving it! Pics soon) Really digging how I can dial in all the tones from my jazz bass except with more punch. Any suggestions on mods to add a little brightness to it? I'd really like to stay passive...

    Drop C, opinions?

I personally play in C-G-C-F, and I rather enjoy it. My fiver is tuned to A-C-G-C-F. (this is all from lowest to highest) It sounds great in a metal band setting. (We're all on this tuning)

    Starting a cover/tribute band

I had a feeling, and that seems perfectly logical. Granted, I wouldn't plan on doing mediocre renditions, but quality renditions with long rehearsal hours put into them. I'm also not too crazy about the "going on stage looking like everyone else bit", in my originals band I go on stage...
