What should I do? To buy or not to buy!

I finally found a pedal for sale but the dude is asking $350. The pedal is hand made and has a 15-20 month waiting list. His pedal is still sealed. So it is definitely brand new. He had to wait 22 months and got fed up and bought another and now doesn't want it since he realized he doesn't...

Do your skills match your passion?

The 10,000 hours to mastery theory has been disproved by new research. As for passion versus playing, I think a level where you can play what you hear in your head is all you need. I don't believe art (an artist or musician) can co exist with contentment. So in some ways not being good...

Do you care more or less about your tone than you used to?

I am no audiophile. I care about tone enough to work it to a point where it sounds good...on it's own AND suits the mood/space of the song. An octave pedal, Sadowsky EQ+DI and a compressor with a TI flat string Am STD P and a Sadowsky strung Am STD J through Hartke head/cab haven't failed me...

    What's your view on this?

I think learning more than one instrument adds depth to your appreciation and perception of Music. I make a living as a session bassist but chose to play the acoustic guitar in my own band as a songwriter. Then I got a harmonica and added it. Two years back my girl friend gifted me a ukelele...

Sire V7 5vers vs Fender J vs Custom build

I was basically asking if I benefit more price/value from a Sire MM or MIA Fender J and I am looking for a bass that will make work great in studio sessions. I have a Roscoe on the whishlist but right now I want a tried and tested J bass since I know Roscoe bass guitars are very different...

    GASing for a P-Bass

Why would you second guess getting a MIA P bass? It is hard to go wrong with a used P bass unless you have no clue about what you are buying. And $700-900 is a great range to buy used with a HSC. Get it over with and cry once.

I decided to go ahead and order the FEA Labs OPTI FET Compressor. Gonna be a while as I am on the wait list. On the lookout for a used Diamond in the mean time.

    Too cranky?

Yeah, cranky. I wouldn't reply to that as well. But it shows you know what you want and are a no nonsense band. I do believe you can convey the same message while still coming across as more approachable. And the fact that you need to ask itself shows that at some level you find your own post...

    Is less more?

I enjoy playing busy grooves and making the bassline an integral part of the song by having a rhythmic and melodic dimension to it. It was a result of growing up listening to Rush, The Who etc and playing in 3 part original material playing bands. But I realised as I grew older (playing covers...

    The Major Fourth

I mean it is physical and not musical approach to playing. I don't mean the fourth isn't a musical choice when used consciously but here it is done because the note reach is easy and not because the melody or the feel you are aiming for demands it. I agree it is tricky to reach a third or...

    The Major Fourth

What I don't get is how you justify using the fourth. It is not a musical choice. It is a limitation because the third is 'more of a reach'. Aren't you using one finger per fret? The third would be played with your index. That's the most comfortable note to play. Even if you play a perfect...

Sire V7 5vers vs Fender J vs Custom build

Been a semi pro who recently turned pro. I play live and tour with some acts and have my own band (two). I own a Fender Am Std J (4 String) and on the verge of receiving a Fender P Am Std (4 string) scored used from TB. I also have an Opti FET ordered and on their waitlist. I am starting to...

    Shall I give (it) up?

Lots of great points covered in this thread. I will post anyway because I want to reiterate that you are NOT too old to be a musician. It only takes six months of lessons with two hours a day to get past your initial problems of knowing the fretboard, major/minor scales etc. You won't be a kick...

No. As much as I wanna say yes, that would be like giving ourselves a boy scout badge.

    Best bass for oldchool funk/slap/jazz-funk

Why not a American std P bass strung with flats and swap the neck on the MIA Fender Jazz with a P neck for slap and more growly tones. Go used and you can have both (p bass + p bass neck) for under $1000. Get a matched pair (same color/finish) - Olympic white in my case and get a Sadowsky...

If I buy new basses hope to get "collector" basses ..

I have a vintage 1960's Gibson bass. Belonged to my grandad. We actually found it in storage after he passed. Been lying there for 9 years after that. Even my father didn't know it existed. Valued at $2200 now. Just got it back from the luthier after some work done on it and he offered me 1500...

    What makes a good musician?

If you wanna make original music all you need is intent, a banged up instrument and a lump in the throat that you need to express. If you wanna play classical or jazz then sight reading may be a tool of the trade, making it a necessary skill.

Don't know why I still do it.

I will tell you why, mate... Being in a band is like being in a relationship and many times people hang on hoping things will change, hoping things will be better long after they know it is past all prime. What happens when you do this in a marriage or relationship? You are afraid to quit/leave...

What Guitar Companies Don't Want You To Know

What is wrong with tradition? You don't need a guy to tell you about your guitars. After you be been playing for ten years with an open mind (and ears) you have all the skill required to pick up a guitar and know whether what you are paying is worth it or not. Who isn't trying to make money...

How to buy a new bass? Local store, manufacturer or Internet sales?

So you are on the fence because it has been played and has some cosmetic wear? What do you plan to do after you buy it? More "Really played that thing", init? Don't let cosmetic wear dissuade you from buying a bass you played and love. Because your other options involve playing a spanking new...

    EQ, when to say enough.

I think the right tone is somewhere between what you dial in and what they dial in. But a lack of the right approach is hindering it. Firstly ask them politely to not do it and take ten minutes next session to discuss it... With an open mind. Be firm but also receptive. I have an affinity to...

Best low B string in the Biz?

What would our long lost leading lights be playing if they were still here?

Seen the Bobby Vega video in YT? He plays the same bass since 40 years. Don't think any of the greats would need anything more than what they have had all along...unless it is damaged/stolen/lost.
