Any Tips for playing in drop C?

Thanks for your input! To clarify, i no longer own a 5 string. I'll get hold of some 120 gauge strings as advised and try them out on the p bass I've seen some heavy gauge cobalt rounds in a local music shop, alledgedly they're designed for metal, might give them a try!

Any Tips for playing in drop C?

I've got to play in drop C for a new band i've just joined. I used to play a 5 banger but part exchanged it some time ago, and i don't have the cash for a new bass right now. So I'm planning on setting up one of my 4 strings for drop C and i have a few questions. - I have a bright and...

JACK BRUCE- what bass and mainly what strings did Jack Bruce use?

Here's jack bruce playing on zappas album in 1974. Brilliant bass line! Invalid Link Removed Sounds like flats to me, but i'm not 100% on that, could be dead rounds with tone rolled off.

Bass with modern build but traditional sound?

Hi all, I really like the feel, build and hardware quality of modern basses such as Waricks & spectors. Things like the adjustable nut, and sturdy one piece bridge with heavily embedded saddles and even the little features like ergonomic tuners really appeal to me. Also those sorts of...

P Bass MIM vs. P Bass MIJ

MIM's are quite hit or miss.. some are great, others have poor build quality.. worth trying out a few. I personally think MIA's are a bit of a rip off and MIJ's are just as good at a lower price. Here's a link to a good comparison video between MIM, MIA and MIJ fender jazz basses. I know...

    4x10 vs. 2x10/1x15

i often find that 4x10s' sound really good on their own, but when the rest of the band kicks in, the tone is drowned out. The 1x15 and 2x10 combo keep things nice and balanced

    4x10 vs. 2x10/1x15

I play though an Ashdown ABM 2x10 & MAG 1x15. I'm very pleased with the sound, the 1x15 shifts plenty of air whilst the 2x10 projects the detail of the tone, and i can get a nice balanced tone which cuts the mix very well.

Double Bass How do I stop the blisters?

Violen is right, you may be playing harder. Again, i suggest a new set of lighter strings and perseverance will sort those callouses. However, it is true that some people are naturally prone to blisters. Suppose if the problem continues, as a last resort you could change to a fretless electric...

Double Bass How do I stop the blisters?

how often do you practice? I only developed blisters when i first started playing bass 7 years ago. I just waited for them to heal then got right back to practicing and they turned into callouses. I've practiced nearly every day since, even if its only for ten mins and the blisters have never...

    Gibson Midtown Bass?

Bad luck crabby. I've never bought a bass or guitar without trying it first, not worth the risk of getting a dud or simply not liking the feel of it. Bit of a catch 22 though, as i would one day like to own a dingwall ABZ, but having never played one, stores never stock them and i cant be sure...

    Gibson Midtown Bass?

Thanks for the help. Had a listen to some SG bass demos and they too have that tone i really like, i'll have to try one out when i next get the opportunity. Very tempted to get a midtown bass now.. but i should really be saving for a decent 5 string!

    Gibson Midtown Bass?

Had a go on a Gibson Midtown bass and was quite impressed. The big fat neck humbucker had a great booming tone and the little bridge humbucker added some nice brightness. seemed the bass had a unique sound which would be a good alternative to my jazz bass and would be worth adding to my...

    list your basses' flaws

Fender Jazz (mexican) - E string saddle lowers on its own (sorted it with thread lock though) - Bit of fret buzz on the dusty part of the neck - I've tinkered with the internation, yet it still sounds a little out on the high up frets sometimes But on the whole it was worth £350 second hand...

    Big Al Bass?

Thanks for the feedback guys. I would like to try out a big al but no stores seem to stock them. Still unsure about its appearance, spiky guitars kinda make my stomach wretch but maybe if i tried it and it was as good as the demos make out i'll be able to see past its looks. Do Ernie Ball make...

    Big Al Bass?

Hi, just wondering what people think of the Ernie Ball Big Al basses? I've watched a few tutorials and i was blown away, seems to have a great passive tone and versatility. Only set back is its hideous 80's glam rock appearance, i have a feeling that if i were to show up at an audition with that...

Am I the only bassist who thinks slap bass is lame?

I do agree with you there! In metal, the tunings can be so low that slapping is the only way to get the bass to cut through the madly distorted guitars. Also the percussive rhythms really help the groove i think

Am I the only bassist who thinks slap bass is lame?

I have learnt to play slap, when I was younger I went though a phase being obsessed with getting good at it. I'm not gonna lie, i learnt it to show off, as i felt musically inferior to my guitarist and drummer friends who could pull off awesome solos, so i learnt slap as a way of saying "i...

Am I the only bassist who thinks slap bass is lame?

I've been watching a lot of bass demos on youtube. Most of the time people will spend ages demoing slap bass, and pretty much never demo it using a pick. Its just really got to me! Who cares what the bass sounds like when playing slap on it? 99% of bands don't have any slap bass. yet all the...

need advice on choosing a bass

Im looking at spending up to £1000 on a new bass. I would like a 5 string, which has wide range of tones and is suitable for most styles of music. Ideally i would like a bass that could have a deep soft sound and a more cutting rock sound. I have tried out a Spector Custom at a local guitar...
