Curious how the switch from active to passive works - no obvious switch in their web page pics.

    Best Bass Strings Results

I'm with you on the Cobalt flats, EXCEPT they do terribly in humidity - outdoor gigs. Where I live it can make a bass unplayable if it's a really humid night. Had to switch off them as a result when playing outdoors in the summer.

(belated)NBD - Music Man Joe Dart Sterling

I really like what you did with it. Not that a pure Joe Dart needs changing, but you did good things.

Why aren't Jazz basses wired Volume-Balance-Tone?

    Damn good question

How Many Basses at the Live Gig?

Agree with a lot that said they bring 2 for having a backup - have had that need come up once. I also intentionally bring 2 for different tones - PJ and a Stingray for material that needs more punch.

Help me not buy a bass

Try a Harley Benton P or J or PJ. Low cost, great quality and you can make the decision whether to get a Fender or other from there.

Bass for playing the leading role in a band

To me, whatever you use will work. As a lot have said, different bass leads have used everything - Pbass, Jazz, Rick's, Stingrays, etc. Take your pick and rock it.

    PJ Basses

Try out a Harley Benton and you can at least see if you like the idea of a PJ. Very decent for the $$

is it worth buying a 5 strings ?

I have both. Which do I play/use more ? The 4's. So, did I really need to buy that 5 string ???

    Fender Dimension Bass Club

Agree - the active pickups are definitely an aspect that gives that impression. I like that Fender included a bypass for passive, but no tone control at all in passive mode is the killer for me. I would have bought one already otherwise. It could have covered what I have in one bass -...

    Simple, but hypnotic bass lines

    Are burst finishes out?

Some bursts are worthy, some not so much. I like the one on my Stingray.

    Are burst finishes out?

Is it fair to say there are good bursts and some not so good. I like my Stingray cherry burst - may not be for everyone.

I cleaned up the music corner!

Mine is a simple Harley Benton Block-300B with headphones and audio in from my phone. The bass is random from the few I own. All of this is in about 10 sq feet of space.

    Fender Player Meteora Bass

I tried one. Great tone options in active mode. A big drawback to me was that it has a passive switch, but then no tone control at all other than adjusting pickup selection. This is really too bad, because, like the meteora guitar, it could have been a great combination of P, J, and MM. As...

    Fender Player Meteora Bass

I played one and it's nice in active mode. In passive, the tone options are reduced to just the pickup selector, which is limiting. I'm surprised at that for a new model that is otherwise fairly flexible.

How a cheap Squier was better than an expensive Fender

I agree. I have a MIM precision that had fairly rough fret edges (easy enough to sand down) and just had to replace a volume pot on it after a year and a half. In the meantime, I bought a Squier equivalent - it really is better in terms of build quality than the Fender.

    NBD - Reverend Triad Bass

Very cool! The CDC says you'll need to add an additional pickup every six months or so.

    Silent Practice

I picked up a cheap Harley Benton compact amp - headphone jack and audio input, with the benefit of a input control knob.

Are your cab and amp the same brand?

I used Aguilar for a long time, but switched to a Mesa subway 800+ head. I still use two SL112's with it. Doesn't seem worth the cost to change out the speaker cabinets.

Do you need a backup bass.

Yes. I had a passive bass go dead at an outdoor gig several years back and would have been toast without a backup.

That one random song your cover band does that nobody else does.

This is one we play that's a bit of a surprise by Urge Overkill - Sister Havana Also a couple of REM songs, Elvis Costello, and JailBreak by Thin Lizzy

    Playing Barefoot

Definitely my preference to play barefoot
  29. bcouper

    Simple Question ?

There are plenty I might not want to play, but that doesn't mean I'd refuse. If it were too many, maybe the band wouldn't be the right one. That said, part of being a good band member for me is letting go of the ego-driven elements.

PayPal sending 1099 forms for any sale over $600 starting 2022

Paypal and it's related Venmo have been raising fees, making arbitrary decisions, etc. I had an account stolen by them - meaning they locked me out of it and there was no recourse. The balance in it was taken by Paypal. I've stopped accepting payment via paypal as a result. I wouldn't be...

    Looking for Warm Thick Tone

I've used the Aguilar TH500 and AG700, then switched to a Mesa Subway D800+. The tone is better to me with the Mesa, but both the Aguilar heads are great too.

    Stingray-the most divisive bass sound?

I own two rays and a fender PJ. I find the need for each has its place. That said, I do tend to play the PJ more for classic rock even though I personally like the rays better as basses.

Intentional irony: A good bassist on an inexpensive bass

You covered what I would have - Joe Dart is the best example I know of for making any bass sound great via talent and skill. Really that's all that should matter - not what brand, where it's made, how expensive or not, etc

What are some of the warmup bands at concerts that blew you away

The Cars, ahead of Foreigner at their early peak - late 70's. Really, when I think about it, Ben Orr influenced me still to today playing his silver Stingray.
