just wondering... how different does the El Toro sound compared to L2K? Are the skinny pickups similar to the currently manufactured wider humbuckers, or???

    Good Punk Bass?

None of these answers are wrong ...but G&L is certainly not a bad choice. or you could DIY a Warmoth if you're feeling so inclined.

    G&L Club Part 7

I have an old USA L-1500 with an additional SB pickup (stacked volumes) and a Bartolini 3-band preamp (stacked mid on treble, separate bass) with 3-way mid freq switch and an active/passive switch (bypassing the EQ). This pic is before I swapped the P pickup for an SB (MFD). For some...

You might consider doing stacked volume and keep the tone on a separate knob. That way you can turn down both volumes quickly.

500 series gear- who is using it?

With a meaty, colorful 4-space tracking box in mind... What do you think about: 1 pre (Hairball Bronze) 1 EQ (Lindell Mid500 pultec) 1 compressor (Hairball 1176 Fet/500 Rev F) ... 1 more EQ? (Capi BT50) ? What would you do with that general goal and that space limit?

Does an artist's social, political, or moral slant make you dislike them?

I think we can praise the work of an individual while criticizing or condemning other aspects of their behavior or character. Some behavior can be so off-putting as to leave a lasting bad taste associated with their work. - Wagner for his Nazi ideology. - Gary Glitter for his...

    G&L Club Part 7

I have a spare G&L neck, and wouldn't mind building a spare bass around it ;) ...but where can I find a compatible body? I don't want to swap this Tribute neck on to my USA made L-1500. I know Warmoth doesn't fit as stock...

Wood type and thickness for building speaker cab

I'm planning to build speaker cabs for some full range Fostex. The original design calls for 18mm thick ply. The hardware store only stocks 12mm ply. I assume I would have to recalculate all the dimensions in this case, and then still be a bit off because the machine removes 3mm between cuts...

    Bass > Modular Synth

Sorry, the list would get a bit out of hand if posted in full. Not all relevant to bass anyhow. I do video synthesis with a modular too. ;) If anyone has specific questions, I will try to provide more detail.

    Bass > Modular Synth

A comparator can sound fine on bass. It depends what sound you're going for. Expect really square. Yes, you can get PWM sounds if the window comparator you're using has VC width. The Blacet one is nice for this. An alternative for similar sounds is the 5Pulser by Ian Fritz.

    Bass > Modular Synth

I use Euro, Frac, and some other bits and pieces. I haven't tried the Moog Freqbox, but (Hz/V)FMing the Metasonix TM-3 (dual gas-filled tube oscillator with variable stability sub osc) with other audio sources like bass/guitar sounds kinda like sync. I have also tried syncing other oscillators...

    Bass > Modular Synth

bumping for the (processing bass with) modular synth love. ' ^__^ Of course, this makes more sense in a studio environment. Live you would usually want to use more compact effects solutions (for practicality of transport, and minimizing setup time). That said, modular allows...

This demo of the Boss SY-300 with custom patches by Jim O'rourke certainly helps sell the machine.

    API TranZformer Bass Preamp

Yeah, but it's all relative. There are cheaper DI pedal options out there, but this is certainly cheaper than buying a 500 series lunchbox plus preamp, EQ, and compressor. I'm still tempted by 500 series though.

    G&L Club Part 7

towards the neck = more fundamental towards the bridge = brighter / more harmonics. I can see why designers would spread pickups out to balance these characteristics. When pickups are bunched up in the middle 'sweet spots' like they are on mine it's more a matter of varying the flavors of...

    G&L Club Part 7

Initially there was some odd phase cancellation (and noise) with the traditional P pickup because the original modder had wired it backwards (out of phase). I corrected this when I swapped in the SB-2 style MFD. Now there is no phase cancellation (kinda wonder if a phase switch might be a fun...

My L-1500 has 3 bands of boost and cut with 3 switchable mid freqs and an active/passive switch thanks to the Bartolini preamp inside. It has an SB-2 pickup added as well. Volumes are stacked for the 2 pickups. :D

If you're interested in cross-dressing, I can't imagine a more appropriate place for it than on stage. Isn't spectacle the point of such fashion? Lux Interior, David Bowie, Brian Eno, NewYork Dolls, Wayne/Jayne County... Have fun. Disregard the haters. (they don't deserve a shag)
