    NBD

I have its 4 string sibling, right down to the TI strings. I like my Jazz and Peavey T40 sometimes for a different tone, but when I pick up the American Standard it always feels just right and helps me get the dynamic feel and emotion into the music.

    I Don't Get Bass Distortion/OD

Hello I never liked the sound I got over driving a bass amp either. Then I heard "Pagliaro - What The Hell I've Got (Live à Québec)" on You Tube and decided to play along with it. The harder I drove the tube preamp the better I liked it until I was absolutely abusing that poor preamp, the clip...

    NBD… Interesting bass..

you are correct on the tone controls. I have one, and I thought $350 Canadian was low, so I gave the seller the chance to back out of the deal so he could get more, but he was a righteous dude. Some of the features like the high mass bridge and the tuners were way ahead of their time.

    "Basses are only tools"

Thanks for the update, I did try to find the whole thread but gave up after 10 pages. Anyway your point is well taken.

    "Basses are only tools"

I saw a couple of comments about art being "only paint and canvas" or "David" being just the components of marble, and all this is true. The way I see it, the bass guitar is the brushes and chisels that are used to create the art, the art being the music. My father was a painter and he had some...

    "Basses are only tools"

There seems to be an increase in the feeling that all objects may becoming priceless collector items and must be maintained in original, numbers matching condition. You are not buying into this and I tend to agree. It goes against some inner conflict I have, but I modified my bass to suite me...

Ok, so what bass evolution do you actually want?

Am I seeing computer thinking, smart phone thinking here? We have to have new features and abilities every year? There will come a time when that technology will mature and the design will stabilize. Then the innovation will slow down. As someone pointed out, there is very little innovation in...

Sir, we need you to leave. -NBD

Wow, love it! I picked one up last year, put in SD 1/4 Pounders and some Hipshot tuners I had put aside and got my favorite Jazz. I only paid $200 CND for it. Those VM's are gaining a reputation as a great foundation.

    NBD!!!!

I have a red American Standard like yours except for a maple fingerboard. It is the nicest of all the basses I have owned to play. I can't tell you why, but when I put my hands on it there is this "Now that feels right" thought goes through my head. I am not surprised you play better when you...

How many colors of basses do you own?

Candy Cola, Candy Apple Red, Tobacco Sunburst, and black.

    Prince was not Magic

I am with you. It is something like how I see Bach. I can appreciate the talent and genius, but the work communicates nothing to me.

Is there really a benefit with "sting-thru" vs toploading?

On my top loaders I occasionally loosen the strings to tighten the bridge screws. On the through body basses I don't worry about the screw tightening. On my CIJ Geddy Lee I was losing sustain and tone and eventually found the neck screws and bridge screws loose, so now I check that several times...

what basses haven't worked out for you... and why?

The Ibanez SR400QM had hissy electronics. The laminated neck was sensitive to the weather requiring frequent adjustments.

How to get a neck that won't easily bow ?

I had the same problem in Calgary. 15% RH most of this winter. I bought 2 Fender American basses with carbon rod inserts and now I have very little adjustment to make. My T40 isn't too bad either. My JC Geddy Lee required adjustment every week.

Cabinets : Front Ported vs. Sealed vs. Rear Ported

Thanks, this adds to my knowledge. In the hifi world I have preferred ported but as of late I am liking sealed woofers. I haven't tried it with my bass guitar yet.

    Discontinued Basses- your faves

The American Standard Jazz. I have the AS Precision. I love its feel. At the time the AS Jazz neck seemed too thick so I bought an American Special and changed the bridge, pickups and tuning machines to American Standard. The fingerboard is rosewood, I prefer maple. Now my fingers are so stiff I...

I shimmed my neck (and the sound changed)

The other way around. The stronger magnetic field from the pickup will damp some harmonic content when it is closer tho the strings.

My Advice - DON'T USE DURACELL BATTERIES IN EFFECTS (OR BASSES)

I have sold and used Duracell and Procell since the 70's. Initially I only saw leaks in AAA, but in the last few years I have had a lot of leaks in AA. I found some Procell AA that were over 10 years old that I forgot about, and hadn't leaked but the recent ones have leaked in under a year. I...

Are jazz bass necks too small?

On a more serious note, there are many thousands of Jazz players out there who find the neck just fine. Then there are those like Duck Dunn who put a Jazz neck on a P bass.

New Bass, Neck keeps loosing Relief.

Old thread but... I bought a new American Standard P with the carbon fiber rods because I was tired of adjusting my old Geddy Lee every time the weather changed. My foggy memory is that I adjusted that truss rod often for a short while, now I adjust it in the spring and fall usually.

What is the heaviest (weight) bass you played?

Peavey T40. The time space thing explains where the time goes when I'm playing it

TalkBass heresy: is anyone else not impressed by gigantic gear collections?

I enjoy seeing gear collections. I also note that, if I ever need to, I can ask questions about their gear.

    Maple fingerboards!

Such lovely basses you all have. Here is my collection, but I need a maple finger board for that jazz. I bought it because everything else was good and I figured I could use a change to rosewood. BIG mistake.

What's the best modification you've made?

Putting Seymour Duncan 1/4 Pounders on a MIM P bass, and putting the MIM p'ups on a Squire. Both worked out well.

Have you ever purchased a bass that you didn’t need at all but you just wanted it real bad?

A Peavey T-40, but I am not sorry about that.

Great, I am happy you read all the advice first. I did the same thing with the same results. Being the paranoid type I adjusted mine some more, but the last little bit of adjustment made no significant difference to my ears, it just answered the "what if I ..." question.

    NBD: Fender MIM Jazz

What a great looking Jazz. It makes me feel sad. 2 weeks ago I saw the same type second hand, same color everything. it felt and played fantastic. Only $400 Canadian I went back a couple of days later, and there it was GONE. Yes I know, he who hesitates ... I am happy for you though.

if money wasn't an issue, would you get a more expensive bass?

I would get a Fender Geddy Lee American Jazz. They are the best basses I have played.

Who was the player(s) that made you want to play bass?

Carol Kaye, James Jamerson, Duck Dunn. I was surprised when I started researching bass players that I had a real appreciation of those 3 with no idea who they were.

    SVT3Pro Bias Setting

When I used to repair Crown DC300A amps I frequently found the power transistors screws not tightened on old units. What tipped me off was uneven voltage on the emitter resistors when they were running about 1 watt. Tightening the screws snug narrowed the difference. With Crown's A+AB biasing I...

Now I am red in the face You are correct about not being expected to remember every post, I am sorry. I should have referenced the previous post, tunnel vision on my part. GK 700RBII got fried because people are dumb - options? (lending gear rant)

I have yet to measure a 4 ohm or 8 ohm cabinet that did not slip a little below the ohms rating, sometimes quite a bit. As okrum pointed out, there is a lot to making a 2 ohm amp, more or bigger output transistors will be needed, the heatsinking and/or fan has to be bigger, the power supply has...

GK 700RBII got fried because people are dumb - options? (lending gear rant)

I have not investigated any GK amps yet, so these comments are general. 1)A lot of amps have thermal protection. 2) A great number of heavy duty amps have some form of current limiting. 3) A 4 ohm speaker will be above 4 ohms on a good many notes. 5) Thermal shut off switches will not reset...

It is clear that something is horribly wrong with me.

That's how I got into bass. I am to fat to fit into the little red sports car, my wife has assured me that there will be violent physical consequences if she isn't the only blond, so what was left? BASS!!

Disappointed in my findings Mesa 400+

I agree with you generally. Here is what made me do the measurements. I was not happy with the low E sound I was getting. Is it the amp or the speaker? One frequency response run and one impedance run told me the speaker was capable of doing the job and the amp wasn't. I rented a number of amps...
