Now that I've been playing 5-string I can never go back

Is it really? Cause I cannot name a single 6 player that has his bass even low-ish. I pretty sure there are some but I cannot recall anyone particular.

Now that I've been playing 5-string I can never go back

Sixes are wonderful but have a lot of drawbacks. The weight, the sheer size, the thing that you have to have them very high on the strap or you'll destroy your left hand (or is it just me) and the fact that the high C is redundant like almost all the time you're not playing chords or solos. Man...

What defines a modern "contrabass guitar"?

Why would anyone need that? This C# is lower than expected human hearing threshold and F# is really close to that too (not that there're many people capable of hearing 20 Hz, let alone systems that can reproduce it. And yes, I know, I know – overtones. But that's still much too low to overtones...

Buying a 5 String Bass Sight Unseen

I went for a six-string not playing it ever before. I think, I had more issues adjusting to tighter string spacing than to the humongous neck (not saying that was easy either).

    Is the Precision still #1?

In case of headstocks I was talking more about Stratocaster, did not remember if the basses changed too. However, larger logos affect the perception of headstock's size that's for sure.

Do You Have a Budget Backup?

Not really a backup due to how different it is but a tuner failed after 21 years on my active 6 string Yamaha with SS strings so I switched to my flats-equipped Squier Jazz for this Sunday. Totally different instrument but still a bass that fulfills the same role.

NBD: Fender Precision 1971 sunburst - where's the mojo?

I remember when I started playing not so long ago (like 10-12 years ago) 70's Fenders were kinda frowned upon, now they're the hottest thing ever. When did it change or is my memory just wrong? Beautiful bass, btw. Just put those covers on :)

What IEM's are you currently using?

I am using Truthear Hexa which are more of audiophile IEMs than stage ones but they do the work for me. They cost close to 80 USD and are one of the best Chi-Fi IEMs in this price bracket.

Janek Gwizdala, the E-C setup and custom necks

Oh yeah, that's the thing people forget about all the time. Acoustic guitar strings are fairly thin at say 12-54 and 25.5 inch scale but the tension is quite a lot higher than a bass at 45-100 and 34 inch scale. Why? Because the scale length and string gauge while important are secondary to the...

Intermittently late on the 1. How can I diagnose and correct this?

You're eather a genius or you're very much underestimating what 5 ms is. IMO 5 ms is perfectly on time and imperceivable to us mere humans. Just do some testing in your DAW and see if you can hear really it.

Why do you pick/pluck, etc the way you do?

I played nylon string guitar for years, thus played with fingers, then played electric for years with a pick, then switched to bass, tried playing with fingers but it felt absolutely different than nylon strings so played with a pick, then realized fingers are superior so got to relearn. Now...

Am I foolish starting on a 5 stringer.

TRBX is not exactly a successor of TRB. TRBX is a child of TRB and RBX. AFAIK not jazzy enough like the TRBs, and not metal enough like RBXs. However, I heard some good things about them albeit never played one.
  25. seafoamgreenjb

Am I foolish starting on a 5 stringer.

That all depends on the style of music played. And five extra notes can make a HUGE difference.
  26. seafoamgreenjb

Am I foolish starting on a 5 stringer.

I don't think starting on a 6 is a good idea... It may make playing a 4 harder for a beginner. And 6 strings are really intimidating IME. But 5 string should be fine or even a great experience learning, I think.

How is the quality of Mexican Fenders nowadays?

I do not have a MIM Fender but I find it really funny that there're always two perfectly contradicting types of responses - Mexican Fenders have been great for the past decade, and Mexican Fenders have been awful for the past decade. How's that possible? :D

    2nd bass for Eb tuning?

Sad thing you cannot embrace low B. It's such a nice feeling to hit that Eb, D or C# (or even lower, though rarely). However, that probably depends on what kind of music you play.
  32. seafoamgreenjb

Such low tension on the low E / B strings

Simple. The outmost wrap ends right after the nut, then the second one, and the third one is the one wound up on the tuning peg.
  33. seafoamgreenjb

Such low tension on the low E / B strings

Isn't the number of wraps the string has at certain thickness one of the reasons for looser B strings? I have 135 low B it has three wraps and it sounds considerably duller than my 105 E string (all that at 35 inch scale length). So while the tension is alright, next time I'll get 125 or 130, I...

6 String BASS Club (Guitarists keep out!)

Oh yeah, weight is really an issue. After playing my Yamaha TRB for two weeks or so I picked up my Jazz bass and it kinda felt like a toy. It felt like picking up an electric guitar after playing bass.
