    SUNO was actually....

It doesn't "know" any of that.

What type of bass sounds like this tone?

Not sure what the bass is, for some reason I thought J... regardless, nice to hear a chill deep house track. Been a while. I listened to a lot of deep house back in the day, and they had some killer bassists playing over that four-on-the-floor stuff.

How many of your basses are 100% ready-to-go? None of mine ever are :-P

All 6 are ready to go. Wouldn't have it any other way.

For Sale Just Over An Hour Away From Me...

If you're into old and muddy tone, go for it. There's one of these at my rehearsal space unfortunately, nothing sounds good through it (disclaimer: I like modern, hi-fi tone).

Backing Vocal Challenges in the Weekend Player Space

I mostly play in instrumental bands because I'm of the mindset that the singers should be every bit as good as the players, and that's been rare in my experience. When I'm Ina bar and I hear a band with scrappy vocals, I generally don't stick around. Bad dadband vox are the worst.

    DR Sunbeams on a fretless?

They're the only strings I use for fretless.

Next cover you plan on tackling.

That's a fun one we added last year. It's real fun on fretless.

That's a fun one. Took my trio a while to get that down.

Any readily available 5 string basses that don't weigh the equivalent of 2 and a half semi trucks on top of a whale?

EBMM Stingray special. You can find something close to 8 lbs.

    Club Bordwell Part 4

It's why I have the fretless 5 now. I bought a brand new Stingray 5HH fretless last year. I thought that was the tone I was chasing. It's a great bass, but I kept coming back to the unescapable feeling that the 6 Cliff made was the tone I was chasing. I guess I was just impatient. I'd play the...

Crowd loves the worst and laziest member of the band

Says more about your audience than anything else, huh? That would drive me nuts, but I don't think I'd be in a band with someone like that.

At least you have the perfect bass for it. I have a MKII 5 and love it.

Next cover you plan on tackling.

Having already figured out the tune "Jaco", moving on to another PMG with Mark Egan on it, San Lorenzo. He's one of my favorites. Been fretless 24-7 for the past year, can't get enough of it.

Can anyone sing Jon and play Chris YESsongs at the same time in the original key?

I haven't played it for years, so I unfortunately don't have anything for you that I can share. I think I. found it easier than most other classic Yes lines because it's very repetitive in terms of its theme, and a lot of what goes on are variations on that main riff. Didn't figure it out in one...

Can anyone sing Jon and play Chris YESsongs at the same time in the original key?

Curious, I think this is one of the easier ones from the 70-80 period, esp compared to some of the others you're tackling. What are you finding challenging about it? Singing over it or playing the actual line?

    Club Bordwell Part 4

I've had the fretless 5 for about 4 or 5 months now and it's pretty much the only one that gets played. And I have some other great basses, too.

    Stingray 5 worth it ?

When I got my 5 string Wal about 26 years ago, I pretty much never played a 4 again, and likely never will. I have two EBMM SR special 5's, a fretted and fretless, and they're awesome.

    Boutique pedals... Worth it?

I'm about 1/2 boutique, 1/2 mainstream/ whatever. I base my purchase on what it does, not who makes it. For example, I have a BOSS MD-500 for my mod sounds. I don't need anything crazy for that, and it does the job. I don't need to spend 400 bucks on a chorus pedal. But nothing can do what a...

Carlo Robelli 8-string for sale on Goodwill site

Yeah, I know.Tthat would drive me nuts. I had a well-known and recently-retired luthier make me a bass once and he couldn't get any dots aligned properly, looked like a monkey did it, so I sent it back.

Khn de Poitrine’s New Godin doubleneck

I think they're overhyped, and I do wonder how much traction they'd have gotten in today's viral environment if they didn't have the whole costume thing. I also think they're immensely talented. I think the fact that people are getting into complex instrumental music is undoubtedly a good...

Why no filters on most basses?

I wish all of my basses had the filter EQ... only the Wal does. It never seemed counterintuitive to me, and I generally don't have to recalibrate my brain when I switch to the other basses. I'd love to have them on my Bordwells and Stingrays.

I'm not smart enough for Genzler Magellan

I have zero problems getting killer tones out of my Genzler. That said, I think it's well-suited to modern tones. I play Stingrays, a Wal and some Bordwells. Don't know how it is for more trad sounds, as I generally don't go for that.

Outside? Fine. Inside, poser central - less "cool", more "out of touch dork". Something you still see old hairbands do.

Is it odd that I rarely play my standard fretted basses any more?

I very rarely play my fretted basses unless a gig calls for it. I just can't resist picking up the fretlesses.

6 String Basses - What are you go-to brands?

When I think 6 string, Fender is never the first thing to come to mind (unless you mean a Bass VI, which is different). If you're sticking with off the shelf, I'd agree with some of the others here... Ibanez, in particular their BB line. Yamaha makes some nice stuff, too. My sixers are both...

    Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Yeah, that's what I figured. Gonna get some pro video out of it, so why not go all in? But this is a larger problem I have. For example, I used the same sound on my Hydra for 3 pieces in that show. I should have just found some similar VSTi and gone that route. I have the Minifreak VSTi, so I...

    Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Thanks. I tell ya, I would not even be doing live stuff were it not for the supportive and generous environment of the Boston synth scene. I have had so many doors open up for me in the last year and a half. It sucks that it's about a three hour drive for me, but the synth scene in Vermont is...

    Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Did a tv show on Cambridge Community TV (Mass.) this weekend, got some great video out of it. It was my first gig where I brought out the fretless with the big board, as well as way too many synths. I really gotta get over this thing where I bring my studio setup to a 25 minute set, it's stupid...
