Tell Me Your Theatre Pit Gig Experiences/Stories!

Theatre veteran here. I have probably played 150 or more productions over the years, and over 3,000 performances. Next weekend I start a production of Mary Poppins which will run through January 21, 2024, with a possible extension until January 28. I'm sure I could come up with stories, but...

    Playing in a big band

Exactly, it is very common for arrangers to write bass, bari sax and bass bone parts that are in unison or in octaves. (I posted an example below.) It's also very common for a bass player to have parts that are in unison or octaves with the guitar or piano, or parts that rhythmically and/or...

What bass/basses will you be gigging this weekend?

I'm playing a total of nine shows this week: 7 performances of a Motown/soul revue where I'm using my 2008 Fender P with flats for the Motown-era songs and a Stingray 5HH for more disco-oriented songs; and 2 performances of The Rocky Horror Show, where I'm using my Marcus Miller Sire V7.

    Paranoid - Black Sabbath

Try this one: And whatever you do, don't try to play this entirely on the E string. :rollno:;)
  13. Febs

    Paranoid - Black Sabbath

    (1) The guitar doesn't play everything on the E string in Paranoid; (2) the guitar isn't playing the octave Ds and Es he is asking about; and (3) depending on how many frets his bass has, it would be extremely impractical or impossible to play that figure on the E string.

    Paranoid - Black Sabbath

I would definitely shift between the 5th and 7th frets. You don't want that open D string ringing out in those octaves.

How to tune Drop b on a 5 string

Agree that this tuning doesn't make much sense for bass, and one of the reasons for that is that, unlike guitar, bass is typically not playing chords. If it were me, I would leave the 5-sting bass in standard tuning and learn where the notes are on the bass neck. But that said, if the...

    Double Bass I hate Cherokee

My band played a gig a Chris' Jazz Cafe in Philly last month. We played the Bill Holman arrangement of Cherokee and it's one of the two tunes from our show they chose to post on their Youtube channel. (I'm on guitar in this band, not bass, and pretty much buried in the mix. But you can see...

Players that won't learn a note

Lol. It looks like the guy you're referring to came into a thread about memorizing the fingerboard and made a bunch of absurd statements like, "theory is more of a hindrance than it is helpful," and then people disagreed with him, and the thread was eventually closed.
